Personaly I'd like it if they stuck the 320gig 1.8" drive from tosh in it and the front off an iPod touch on it, perhaps with a mode that mimics the click wheel for all you Ludites.

You're totally missing the point of the click wheel vs touch screen thing :p

The only thing they can do, cosmetic wise, is give it a larger screen, like the zune.

While hopefully not shrinking the click wheel too much.

I would like the iPod Classic to have a flash drive, instead of hard drive, because although I want a lot of space, I don't like the idea of walking around with a Hard Drive in my pocket.

I prefer listening to my aiff files, and since I'm starting to get cds again and copying them over to aiff, I would prefer a larger capacity classic. I'm at around 86 gb of music. Not all of it is aiff. I have the 120 right now and I know there's a 160 out, but I would rather wait for a bigger upgrade before I get a new one. I've only had my 120 gb classic for a little over a year.

If they release something in the lines of a 256 gb touch(a good ways from now lol) I'd jump on that

If they decide to switch to flash, I think it'd make more sense to see a 128GB iPod nano.

Either way, I think they're going to EOL the iPod classic in the next couple of years.

A larger capacity Classic would be awesome. I had ~30 GBs left on my old Classic when it died, and that is too close for comfort IMO. I'd rather have way more than I need anyways.

Also Apple should really let iPods read FLAC files. I'm tired of converting everything.

Myeh I think the hard drives are fragile thing's been overblown. I run with an iPod mini about 4/5 times a week. It still has its original 2005 hard drive. (I wish Apple still packaged their iPods with belt clips. So handy)

Although tbh my iPod hard drives are about the only ones I've ever owned that haven't failed. :(

I believe the Classic is the proper representation of what started the whole iPod movement. Despite the predicted low market for such a device, I would hope they would keep it around for those who prefer the large space. That being said, I just purchased my first iPod, a classic, 2 days ago. I keep my files in WAV and want a digital jukebox with no sound degradation. I think I only have 28 GB left on the 160. KEEP THE CLASSIC ALIVE!!!

Alternate note, from what I read Wav files were PCs version of Apple's AIFF. Anyone care to confirm or deny? Is one better than another? I converted to Mac from PC a year ago and love each step away from PC I can take. It sounds like a conversion to AIFF from WAV wouldn't do much for me and the thought of re-importing all those CDs doesn't sound like it would provide much...:apple:

.wav is indeed a microsoft creation (along with IBM). The general thought is it's a equal format to the AIFF in every way. They are both uncompressed audio files. Don't make yourself crazy. .wav is awesome. I have everything on my Classic at 192 MP3. Sometimes I wish I'd gone .wav, I'm just not sure I could fit my whole library in that format.

Indeed, if Apple does decides to keep the classic model, we may see it go to a larger display and a smaller click wheel, along with minimum 128 GB flash memory. This will allow for a higher-resolution display for playing back movies. It will keep the same external physical shape as the current iPod classic, so Apple does not need to create a new dock adapter cut-out for the iPod Universal Dock.

I don't think a kid should really be telling others these things

Doesn't matter where it comes from, the truth is the truth.

The iPod has had LED backlit displays since the original in 2001. It's a fact.

iPod with Scroll Wheel (5GB and 10GB) Technical Specifications

Display
2-inch (diagonal) liquid crystal display with white LED backlight
160-by-128-pixel resolution; 0.24-mm dot pitch
Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously

I've thought this for a while. Small click wheel from the nano, a hug display (retina? hah) hug HD. Maybe a 320gb?(or largest single plate hd they could get in it) and a camera.

"The brand new Classic."

I'd buy a classic if it came with a hug!
:p

I think the space will be updated, but I'd love to have it have a bigger screen.

Maybe increase the screen to like 3inchs? (0.5 less than Touch).

If it was that big I'd take Classic over Touch any day :D
(I have a Touch atm, I would have a Classic but the screens a bit too small).

i believe Classic will be discontinued in favor of the Touch and Nano, which will have increased flash memory (which is better than any HD-based memory). I dream of a huge ipod of flash memory just for lossless music. If Apple grabs HD-AAC maybe we'll start to see lossless in the iTunes Store. I believe a 128 gb iPod Touch will get in september. I love Classic as you do guys but we have to admit that it's old if that keeps the slow HD, it would definitely be better with flash memory.

I don't think it will be discontinued.

But, at this point, it doesn't really appeal to the "mainstream" market anymore. That's the iPod touch.

So make it a device for audiophiles.

Use the highest quality components, processing chips, etc.

Maybe a case redesign - all aluminum. I wouldn't expect a larger screen. I doubt it'll move to flash memory as hard drives are much more cost effective but it is possible.

Yo good topic - was hoping there would be one of these on the web somewhere :)

I just upgraded my phone from an iPhone 3G 16gb to a Dell Streak and currently have an 80gb iPod classic but have been looking to get a new iPod for a while mainly for larger storage and Genius.

I am selling my iPhone on eBay and WAS going to use the money made from that to buy the classic but might wait now until we know more about the future of the iPods.

I left my Classic on a plane last week. Rather than buy a new one so late in cycle, I decided to use my iPhone as a hold-over until we see what happens with the next refresh. But...

I've always maintained that the IOS interface is not convenient for interacting with the iPod (much too much to simply get to the song), but now with some experience using it, I'm even more convinced. Trying to do something simple like skip a track while driving is downright dangerous on the iPhone or Touch, while with a click wheel it is second nature.

Please, Apple, don't forsake the Classic! Capacity and simplicity for music lovers above all else!
