If they kill the Ipod classic i'm going straight to the Zune HD 128 as soon as it comes out. I prefer the Ipod classic's GUI to anything else on the market (like it WAY more than any Zune, other Ipod or any other brand i've seen), but I'm really tired of the iphone/touch style menus. I could never see myself buying a touch.

If there is no more OG Ipod, the Zune HD is next on my list.

What about the iPod Nano? Similar but smaller.

In terms of what will actually happen to the Classic in the near future is not certain, no one knows exactly what Apple will do but the future is indeed looking bleak for the old Classic.

I for one would like to see the Classic aimed at audiophiles, or atleast people who have a slight knowledge & interest in higher audio quality. Now it goes without saying that most fully blown sound geeks would stay away from the iPod range all together, but I do feel that if Apple did a few things different with the Classic it could become a niche product & generate interest from a different market.

Improved sound card (This would be my main demand in a new classic)
Faster (I find at times my Classic lags a bit when changing menus/songs)
More space (160gb will last most people a long time but if you factor in those who like to store all their music in lossless then more memory may be necessary)
Interface revamp (I feel it is a bit outdated compared to other products and would only really need a minor update to stay competitive)

I also think Apple should add a lossless option in the iTunes store, I for one would use this feature and know many others that would happily stop buying CD's in favour of this option.

However, I highly doubt any of these things will happen as Apple are not a company who pride themselves on 'sound quality'. Just something to think about though.

I know I'd buy that product, but, like you said, it's not what the market is demanding. Most people just don't care about sound quality, IME. People want do-it-all devices & small form factors. To see what some of us crazies will do for maximizing portable sound, check out the portable forums on head-fi.org. I use a portable amp w/ my 2009 Classic; a very nice improvement for my ears.

I bought a classic last month, and ended up returning it. I really didnt like the split screen set up and the wheel was really, really unresponsive. If they fix those issues, I'd buy another one. I liked everything else about it, but the split screen made everything too tiny. I dont care about album covers on the Classic, at least make it an option to turn it off and increase font size!

I just bought a new, sealed ipod 5.5G on ebay (can't believe that i found one :)!) because I just do not like aluminium faced ipod 'classics'. The classic is white, not silver.

Therefore, I'd like to see a return to the true classic colour, but have it done in the ceramic that the new iphone will use. That would be awesome, and still stay in keeping with apple's green credentials.

A larger storage capacity is always nice, although not all important for me.

(And for those interested, new 5.5G images below!)

I love my 5.5gen Ipod, it's the only pod that can hold my music, it's based in my car and i use my itrip with it, no faults. I have a shuffle for the gym and my iphone for everyday walking around, but i dislike the fact that i have to switch music around if i fancy a change!
I love the fact the ipod was transformed into the 'classic' and the storage keeps going up, but with the ipod touch, the iphone and the nano taking the limelight the classic does seem a little oldschool for todays market.

A refresh with HUGE storage, possible 3.2mp + camera/HD Video, larger screen, BT/wifi file transfer and similar applications to the nano - nike+ integration, pedometer, FM reciever and possibly an FM transmitter??? Would definitely make the oldschool ipod fly off the shelves again! :D

Although of course i'm dreaming, next update will just be bigger HDD! :(

Agree with you, and I'm rather fond of my Classic, too. I have a Touch also, which is beautiful, - and which I use for music - but my classic still gets a lot of use on a daily basis. As others have said, it is also the iPod that goes everyday to work and almost everywhere else with me in my briefcase, a permanent travelling companion.

Perhaps a SSD and the ceramic finish of the iPhone would be nice, but, in truth, the music is the point with the classic, - I don't neded the extra bells and whistles - and I like the long battery life, so I agree completely with Dork420 on the key function of this "classic" device.

Cheers

I thought it would be nice if the next iPod classic resembled the Magic Mouse. White front with clickwheel and screen, matte aluminum back, like the iPad has now.

If I were Apple, I think I'd position the Classic as the iWhatever for audiophiles: keep it with the biggest storage capacity, so you can keep your whole collection on there at a fairly high kbps, upgrade all the components so that they're the best possible for audio playback, and upgrade the OS with equalizers etc to fine-tune the sound, and the ability to view much more of iTunes' metadata: composer, year of release, playcount, BPM etc.

In terms of new features, you could even look at crossfading etc, so you could create seamless playlists, etc.

I think unless they move to a full size screen, it's not going to be the best option for viewing photos, or movie playback - the iTouch is much better for this as the screen is double the size.

I want them to go back to basics with the next Classic.

160GB HD.

Current or better battery.

Video iPod 5th Gen interface - strip out all the laggy, hateful artwork that can't be deciphered at the low res they are shown. I'm looking at you split screen and cover flow.

As much as I like the Aluminum shell I prefer the plastic/metal of the 5th Gen.
Also go back to the material used in Gen 5 for the click wheel, I have the 160GB Classic (2007) and the new material isn't as smooth to scroll through.

+ a million

i really hope they don't do away with the iPod Classic, i am going away to california next week for about a year or so, camping and hiking and what not, and i expect my 5th gen 60gb ipod video to perform perfectly, the only thing i wish that would be applied to older ipods is the Genius Feature, i have really come to love this feature. Might have to upgrade to the iPod Classic before i leave

nah, i have those :p i mean those random things i can't remember what material they were, but they were black, and said iPod on the top and actually came with every iPod Classic for free... this was years ago though, when Apple were actually nice... lol ;)

No, they came in the color of the ipod you bought. Link to an image below, it's on the left side. I still have mine, I use it for my iphone. I have a hard case for my ipod video, as it gets handled all the time in the car and in my pocket and such. It is my favorite ipod and I will use it until it dies.

I'm looking at those new iPod photos and trying to remember if mine ever looked like that :p I gave in and put a gelaskin on it at the beginning of the year 'cause it was so scratched up. And the white looked nice, but aluminium wears a hell of a lot better.

The headphone jack broke on my video again this week - I fixed it, but it got me wondering if I'd replace it if Apple came out with a new improved Classic. Only 10GB left as well and I just upgraded the hard drive to 60GB in December :(

You are delusional if you think the Classic is going to still be around this year.

Jobs hates hard drives almost as much as flash.

And now that flash memory is getting cheaper and larger, they won't look back.

The closest they will come is a little beefier, Nano type device, which might be what we want anyway.

For those of us that like music only type players, Apple is slowly leaving us behind and worrying more about pleasing uber geeks (which I am also) and pre-teen girls.

One reason why this is unlikely:

Cost of HD Vs Cost of SSD

larger hard drive would be nice

For me, 160GB is way overkill for music. All my music and my wife's music total to just 40GB. Which means even if our music collection expands at an exponential rate, we have plenty of breathing room. However, 160GB is peanuts for movies. I have 3.5 TB of movies in my collection, and that grows by ruffly 25% each year. Currently there is enough space on the iPod to store movies for a trip or such, but I need to pick and choice what to bring. The more space the better, because it means I have more selections available when traveling.

I believe you mean anywhere you firstly, have access to wifi/3G and secondly, anywhere where you've paid to have access to said wifi/3G.

I get the impression that America has a lot more free wifi hotspots going on than the UK at least does. I can't think of a free wifi hotspot in my city and I don't want to pay for internet on my iPod.

Basically, no way a cloud based iPod seems viable to me.

Oh god I hope not. It could be a great system but it wouldn't be. Every single person I know would hit a spot where they wouldn't get a phone signal. You also couldn't use it on planes. So no. Unless you can be guaranteed 100% access anywhere in Britain (in caves, in the sky, in very remote areas) then it wouldn't work and people would just buy a competitors product.
