Help Restoring!!!

I started this but soon found out that I don't know enough to do it. All I did was type in the address into the mobile safari browser when I decided not to try this. It told me I had to restore and I already knew that from the directions but now when I restore it gives me an error message saying...

"The Ipod "Ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (-18)."

Can anyone help me restore this thing. If not it should still be covered under best buys thirty day return policy so I'll just try that tomorrow but I'd rather not go through the hassle if one of you guys can help me.

ok, when I try to install the ssh, it gives me a error on the last restart about not being able to open the file to write to the touch. That has to be why I can't verify the ssh. Any ideas now?

opened .tiff on touch
opened up iphuc
unpacked os from touch
Noticed I had a different version from what the guide said, (note earlier post)
but fstab into proper directory
uploaded new .dmg to touch
opened INdependence
ran SSH installer
wouldn't work

restored ipod

instead of doing all the crap over again, I just went to the .tiff on the touch
then I just copied the fstab file from my desktop to the touch using iPhuc and terminal.
opened INdependence
install SSH finally seemed to work, as in my touch would actually restart for me. After the second restart, independence gave me the error that it couldn't open the file to write to the touch.

NOw I'm unpacking the cracked os from my touch

seems that some folder called drop bear was added, with two files inside. That's the only changes I notice from the clean version.

thanks for the post. I'll try it and let you know.

ssh install wont work

ok hi im getting stuck on the ssh install via independence , every time it says to restart my ipod i do (yes by sliding to power off) my ipod will then restart but only to a white apple, does anyone know why this keeps happening? ( 3 times lol) (im doing it off my mac but im going to try it off my vista pc if i dont get any luck soon).

if any of you need to restore your ipod do this
plug your ipod in launch itunes, then hold sleep and home buttons until your ipod boots into the white apple, continue holding until the screen flashes off and goes black, then continue holding the home button, your screen shouldnt do anything (mine didnt) then itunes should say its detected an ipod in restore mode....

For those of you having problems with independence and getting stuck with a white apple, make sure you reboot immediately after the jailbreak and before installing ssh. I was going crazy trying to get ssh installed until I realized I needed to restart.

So just to clarify do you power off or hold down home sleep? After entering putfile iphonefs/rdisk0s1.dmg /dev/rdisk0s1 in terminal?

it work - brilliantly.

Just remember to follow every step. you can just cut and paste the commands into iphuc and termial. This saves time.

Where the hell is this drop bear folder. it's preventing me from sshing into my ipod.

My version of Mail and Maps seems to crash. Probably a bad upload.
I'll try again tomorrow.

ssh -l root 192.168.1.101 and i get

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!
Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!
It is also possible that the RSA host key has just been changed.

OK, here's what you need to do....

- In finder go to the menu bar and click Go > Go To Folder....
- Type: /Users/yourusernamehere/.ssh/
- Move the "known_users" file to the trash

Then retry the ssh process

Let me know if you need more help

Good luck :)

I'm unable to install SSH on my touch. I get:

Failure

Error opening destination file for writing on phone.

Error

Error writing etc/dropbear/dropbear_rsa_host_key to phone.

Any ideas?

edit: Oops. Didn't reboot the phone after the jailbreak. Duh.

Finally!

I went to bed last night with a restored and no hacked ipod. I woke up early this morning, looked at my touch and thought :: are we going to do this again?::

We did

It worked.

I'm cracked and hacked and so is my Touch.

Keep it up those of you who are having trouble. It's a finicky process.

Make sure you RESTART AFTER you upload the new OS BEFORE you go into the SSH installation. That's what messed me up I think.

YoYomac: when you say restart after uploading the OS. Do you mean restart the ipod or restart your computer?

Yeah, I realized after I restored that I didn't reboot the iPod after copying over the modified OS, and that's what caused the issues.

I love Chatty, btw. I have shirts from Clumpie's Ice Cream.
