Or just use Apple’s keychain?
It depends on your needs. If you only need what keychain offers, then stick with it.

If you want more features , such as accessing your passwords on Internet connected computers where you keychain isn't available , then you want to look at other products.

For me, I often want to access my passwords on computers I may not have full control of, like my employer's laptop, or certain business partners that give me access to linux "Jump Host" that I use to manage their networks and systems for them. Since these are Linux systems, Keychain won't even work on them. Even the Mac computers have iCloud disabled for security reasons.

Sure, I could access keychain on my phone and then type in the really, really long passwords with special characters, or I could install 1Password X and just type my master password in.

I'm not sure why you singled out 1Password , as it's really Yellow Sticky notes vs Keychain vs Everyone else, haha.

I could do a feature comparison, but it would be putting the cart ahead of the horse. First things we need you to list your requirements - needs and wants in an password manager - and from there we can narrow down the list of apps that might meet your needs.

I think sharing logins is the reason I stick to 1Password over Keychain, especially with cross platform support. There is a completely different conversation to be had about how everyone should have their own credentials to access shared accounts, but in practical terms, family members often share one set of credentials, so it's a feature that is needed.

Better? Can keychain work with multiple users? Can keychain work on Windows, Android or Linux?

1Password also warns of breaches via the Watchtower feature.
Sorry for the confusion.
I meant keychain is better in iOS 14 than it was in iOS 13.

Nice. I use KeePass KC for work related items.

I've been a long time LastPass user but switched to KeepassXC. I did this for local control reasons and to save $12 a year on the premium account I had.

I have a Nextcloud instance setup on one of my domains and use that to sync to all my devices between home, work and mobile.

It's all setup and running (Nextcloud and Keepass) on the following:
  • Arch Linux (main PC)
  • Windows 10 (gaming PC)
  • Manjaro Linux (office PC)
  • Manjaro Linux (office laptop)
  • Android 10 (Google Pixel 3a)
  • iOS (older iPad Pro 9.7")
1Password and LastPass, to me, are basically the same thing with a different look and feel. Both are very good services and I'd recommend them to anyone who needs simple, easy to setup password management.

But for those who want more control and have a little bit of tech savvy and like open-source solutions, I recommend Keepass and Nextcloud on a domain you own and control. Or one can just use Keepass locally, offline, and be happy that way too.

What MacOS verdion do you have? It doesn't work on Catalina.
Im on Catalina. Its 64bit and works fine.

For those who don’t want to pay a subscription for 1Password, you can still purchase the standalone directly from Agilebits. And for those looking for free, try Bitwarden. it is an excellent app with many features like 1Password has.
I have a copy of the stand alone and I have used 1Password all the way back when they were doing a serious hustle to promote themselves (somewhat beta release). I'll check their site to see if they still have the stand alone and if they also have one for iPad. If they do not have the latter, then I'll have to figure on another app. For me, I liked them before they went to the paying to keep playing model. After going to their site, (Agilebits) I'll see what folks say elsewhere if a replacement is needed.

They have a stand alone version. However, keeping your devices in synch is not as easy as with the subscription. Also, if you are a household with multiple Apple ID’s then you really need the family plan.

For those who want something in between 1password and keychain - try Kypass (Keepass clone for macOS). Sync your database file with iCloud.

Gives you a lot of the benefits of 1password in terms of ease of management, cross platform access, etc. But not as expensive as 1password. It is cross platform though, iOS, android, macOS, linux, windows, whatever (just get a Keepass compatible client for it).

I use it for work, as our work passwords are in Keepass (for Windows).

I'm on a 1Password family plan. As "tech supervisor" for our household, it's very very helpful to me to be able to share a vault with my wife. If she says, "what's the password for [utility, streaming service, etc]" I can say "it's in 1Password" and know that she'll be able to find it on her laptop or her phone. We also have copies of our passports and lots of other important documents. All encrypted, all synced, all easily accessible.

If it was just me, I could roll my own solution for all this, keep passwords in Keychain and probably put other stuff in an encrypted disk image on iCloud Drive or something. But the layers of complication and upkeep that would require with a family? I'd rather pay the $40/year or whatever to know that the problem is solved and that security and site compatibility are being maintained on an ongoing basis.

And that's it exactly. It just works. And if it doesn't, the support is excellent.

I too have no regrets going with 1Password, for the issues you stated.

Besides using 1Password on my iPhone and iPad Pro, I also use it on my Mac mini. I wish I had the ability to unlock 1Password with my Apple Watch. It is a pain having to re-enter my long password many times a day.
FYI this feature is currently in beta testing for the Mac (1Password 7.7.BETA-0). However, this is only supported on Macs that have a Secure Enclave so you may well be out of luck, I'd assume it will make it's way to iOS in the future.

That is good news. Thanks for the update. My 2018 Mac mini should be able to support it, since it has the T2 chip.

I am having an issue that 1PW support has not found a solution for. Perhaps someone can suggest something?

I used to be able to go to a web site, on my iPhone, tap on the user name or password and 1PW would fill in the information Now when I tap on the user name or password, I get a key on the bottom. I have to tap the key which then takes me to my 1PW auto fill login, which I have to tap and only then does 1PW will in the information. I end up getting to where I need to be, but it takes 2-3 extra steps.

Does anyone know if the App has changed? Thanks.

I absolutely hate software subscriptions. To be avoided as, at the end of the subscription, you end up with nothing despite having paid all the monies over a long time....but for 1Password I caved because I could not live without its functionality.

What in particular do you find most valuable that kept you with 1Password. I still use the stand alone as I did before 1Password was established. Many of us voted them into top app long long long long ago.

I love 1Passwords ease of use and simplicity across all my devices. Definitely worth it if you use more than one computer I think.

I'm totally Apple, but I still use 1Password for a few reasons. (1) shared password vault with my wife plus private for myself, (2) app on iPhone lets me generate passwords for apps, (3) lets me share a vault from a different account for passwords at the theater where I volunteer.

1Password is a premium service and if you'll benefit from the premium features, it's well worth it. Some people will do fine with just Keychain but I'd find it too limiting.

I have had this happen to me a few times. If i am not mistaken, this happens due to how you have the login information set up for that site. If the site has slightly changed or you accidentally save the same information for the site under two different logins, 1Password will exhibit the behavior you saw. You need to go into your vault and make sure you don’t have duplicate information (re: user and pass) under two differently name logins. More than likely, that is your problem. I solved it the same way. I am surprised the 1Password people couldn’t figure it out.

Paying 1password a subscription on a monthly basis or use the keychain for free? As long as you don't have cross-platform needs

I always wonder about this question. This post has cleared things up greatly. Thanks.
