I always wonder about this question. This post has cleared things up greatly. Thanks.
It sounds good on the surface. If keychain doesn‘t work at all, doesn’t sync like it should, or a plethora of other problems which have happened, a person solely relying on keychain will be in a world of hurt without some kind of backup alternative.

I was lucky enough to paid for 1Password before it went into subscription route. 1Password is not just for passwords, but I can store important notes securely in it. And obviously its user interface is much more friendlier than Apple's keychain.

What in particular do you find most valuable that kept you with 1Password. I still use the stand alone as I did before 1Password was established. Many of us voted them into top app long long long long ago.
I have 2 mac's and 2 iPhones. I needed the multi-user option and the syncing. If I had 1 mac only, the stand alone would indeed have worked fine.

Before? You can still get it without the subscription.

Oh, didn’t know that. How to get it perpetually for new user? Their websites only shows subscription pricing.

It is not a perpetual license. It is only valid as long as the version and any upgrades are in force. At some point in time you will need a new license.

The standalone license syncs with an Apple ID. If you have multiple users, each with an Apple ID, who want to share a vault, you will need a subscription.

Okay, but how does a new user get it? When I check their websites, they only list subscription model.

Oh so it becomes a "secret menu" kinda thing. Alright, thanks. :D
Wish people would just include that explanation at the beginning instead of simply saying there's one.

From the website.

"Upgrade to 1Password 7
To get started, download 1Password 7 and install it. When you open the app for the first time, click Subscribe Today to sign up for a 1Password membership. Or, to purchase a standalone license, click “Need a license? We have those too.”"

There is no seperate standalone app which is different from subscribtion. This is absolutely same app but what licence you buying?

If you read all this than you seen picture with hint, seperate option one time purchase.

This is their pricing page, which is what a new customer would be looking at.

I use Apple keychain for what doesn’t really matter and I do not consider it secure because you can use your login password to view passwords! I’ve been using last pass for years now but with all the recent changes I’m a little on edge.

I imagine the new customer would do the 30 day free trial first (who doesn't like free stuff). Once downloaded the interface in post #89 pops up pretty much every time you open it until you action one of the 3 options or the trial expires. Those options are 1) 'Subscribe today' 2) 'Need a license? We have those too.' 3) 'Already have a membership? Sign in.'

Is your issue that they obscure the visibility of the standalone option to push memberships? If so, absolutely. Or is it that that the buying process itself is difficult and you have to 'contact them through their website'? If the latter I disagree. Click the link you've seen daily over the trial, pay and off you go like most software.

Thanks for the clarification. There was a reply previously that stated that they got the perpetual license through a call to the customer service. That’s why I mentioned how it’s like a secret menu.

yes, the obscuring of the option is annoying. But I’m glad that is still exist.

I have been thinking of checking out Lastpass. What recent changes have you on edge.

1password Mac beta recently got watch to unlock app feature for machines with Secure Enclave. This is a great addition and one I have wanted since apple introduced admin requests on watch with Catalina last year.

I have been with 1Password since it first came out. The years that they offered free or reduced upgrades were nice and doable. The subscription had me comparing the competition - Lastpass, keepass (different versions), got sticky password in a bundle, but finally found and have been sticking with Bitwarden for the last 9 months.

It works really well on all devices. It's free, with whatever devices, but I upgraded to the Family Sharing for only $12 a year to give them some support. Their premium is only $10 a year. Great values especially with how well it works.

I still use 1Password 6. I love it. But I wouldn't pay for subscription. I'm really trying to keep down the number of things I subscribe to.

I use 1Password not just for login passwords (Keychain can do that) but also for confidential info; answers to security questions; passwords for sites that ask you for the 1st, 3rd, 5th etc letters of a password; client passwords; family passwords; notes about passport numbers and other financial info; printing out a full list of passwords and notes that goes in my 'if-I'm-hit-by-a-bus' safe that my family have the keys to, and so on.

As far as I'm aware, Keychain can't do any of the latter. Having a secure, regularly updated, printed list of passwords and secure notes in case of death or disaster is especially important if you have family or other responsibilities. In 1Password, all my vital info is tagged, and then every year or so, I just select / update that tag, print, put in safe, and job's done.

I also like the notifications about accounts with websites that have suffered security breaches.
