They are already with Ivy Bridge. We won't see Haswell quad-cores with less than 35W TDP..

Haswell has adjustable TDP.

Ivy bridge will not be much of a performance increase. The ordinary dumbo user will not notice the difference between Sandy and Ivy bridge.

Heat with the Sandy bridge models are an issue - I have noticed quite a number of postings about logic boards failing just out of warranty. Am glad I went back to a 2010 server.

Accordin to Intel, Haswell is also "only" a 15-20% performance boost compared to the 10% of Ivy, so nothing to hold your breath to. And the "adjustable TDP" is kinda useless in a desktop that has no problem supporting 35W CPUs cos you would loose some power in that case.

I had almost persuaded myself to turn away from getting a mini until today. On price grounds it just wasn't adding up with the spec available on a windows machine

Then....

One of the house pc's started blue screening for no apparent reason (seems to be have been windows update related!).

And then it appears minis are being updated! It's a sign I tell you, a sign. I want stuff that just works, but I don't wont to feel ripped off when I buy it. Seems the waiting might be about to pay off.

Yeah, finally, it does! When I wanted to buy a Mini back in february, I never'd have thought to wait this long ... At least I'll get it a few days before I have to finish a project my MBP can't handle - will be hard work, but it is going to be fun on a new Mac Mini. ;)

This is nonsense. Some Mac minis have also defective components, like power supplies or overheating GPUs in some models. Some versions of (Mac) OS X caused kernel panics and “blue screens” on many Mac models. So “just works” is nonsense.

This is what I actually HATE about Apple.
Instead of letting people know that a new release is coming within a week or two, they say nothing.
So people like myself, who have been sick of waiting, end up buying a used Mac mini server, because you can't find any new ones, and then 3 days later. "oh, by the way, there's going to be an announcement in a week". But again, from a non official source. So who knows if its really true or not.

Oh well, at least I only paid $850 for the Mac mini server.
I guess I can always sell it, if the specs for the new ones are drastically different.

If the new Mini hits store shelves before 11/03/12, my current one will be going back to Best Buy and being exchanged for the newer version.. :D
Not that there is anything wrong with the one I have, but if there is a newer one, I would rather have it as it's EOL is further out.

10% + 15-20% makes it approx 26.5 - 32% over the Sandy bridge.

The adjustable TDP is actually important because that will enable bringing down the idle (and under load) temperature and as such increase reliability.

They won't be drastically different. Ivy Bridge is an incremental improvement over Sandy Bridge, whereas Sandy Bridge was more of a leap.

Haswell will be the next leap. The main thing you'll get is USB3 which is nice. Maybe a bump in the discrete graphics if they have it, but not a GT650M.

The HD4000 will make the Mini Server slightly more useful for gaming... slightly. My HD3000 runs Portal 2 just fine but I rarely have time to play games any more. :(

If this mythical event were to take place on the 23rd, invites would probably come out today, right?

Don't forget they love to say "twice as fast as the previous generation"! With a quad-core model and well chosen benchmarks, they could claim this easily (as the server model doesn't count for their comparison), and with a GT 640M I'm sure they find some games running up to twice as fast as on the HD6630M.

My 2007 mac mini has beach balled to death, grey screens that don't wake up, and many more countless problems. I almost had more problems with my mini than my main PC. I'm on a 2011 mini now though, no problems YET.

It would come out sometime before Saturday.

I'd love for them to put in a decent little Nvidia GPU, not sure how likely the chances of this happening are though?

Technically, there is no reason they shouldn't do it. Nobody knows the exact TDPs for the Mini, but even a GT 640M LE would be a decent upgrade, and the 32W 640M probably shouldn't be a huge problem either.

Hey, even 500€ notebooks come with a GT 640M nowadays ...

I have been a mac skeptic for years, I still will have a windows/linux machine as my main pc, but I want to look into developing for the IOS. A secondary computer will be bought in the form of a mac and the mini is the perfect choice, I have been checking here for about 5 months, hoping something would happen and now it seems to be the case.

The mini is a great mac and I hope its one that's around for years to come. The entry level mac is a good product that will entice the likes of myself(a seasoned windows user) to take a second look at an Apple machine.

I hope like many here I am not disappointed in next weeks announcement.

Mythical?

Yeah, it wasn't confirmed until 3 hours after my post. I was just thinking that Apple usually sends out invites a week in advance. So if the event was to be on the 23rd the invites would go out today. Which they did.
