They're making nice phones and a lot of phones, so both quantity and to some extent quality. Though some will question he quality aspect, I do like their designs, i.e., Note 3

Samsung's marketing team is likely the best right now.

I work in Midtown NYC and I'm seeing a lot more business types from Lawyers, DR's and a few from investment firms with NOTE 3's... I own a Note 3 and the functionality of it blows a lot of other phones away. I still see the iphones but it's most people Instragraming or on facebook or facetime. But the shift to me is the business types are going for samsung note's.

No one else has an answer to the Note line, it's a perfect meld of business and personal. Android has grown up a lot and as even Jobs said in the emails it does somethings better than iOS.

Everyone including apple is marketing their devices as social devices but ignoring the get things done types sure they mention task complete apps but the Note line is the only one to currently making GETTING things DONE as it's bread and butter.

As for the build, I like it , all this "feels premium" stuff is elitist/superficial bs to me. I care about getting things done the Note/Samsung devices aren't ugly and for less that 40 bucks get a case to add more "premium" feel to it.

I used to hate samsung, I was a stock android loyalist but I started using the note device then got the note 3 and I'm a convert. Plus the long life battery and storage expandability are great too.

^^ This. The reality is the iPhone did change the game and became a great hit for many. However as time rolls on, competition comes into play and more importantly users needs change as their lives and knowledge of devices evolves. Users demand more and the business & personal user groups further dissect.

Given most of us use a phone for both personal and business and the desire to carry one device is strong, given most everyone has to work for a living, it's only natural devices for work will begin to grow and win out on the choice of phones to use. The Note 3 and many of the Sammy devices do allow for way more functionality. Many use it for work and in many cases it replaces the need for a small tablet. It accomplishes my personal needs, work needs and has greatly reduced my need for even my beloved iPad.

For younger people/teens here (Sweden) it seems to be increasingly about having "a Galaxy" (no distinction made between the various models), "iPhone" is no longer the hype word for these kids like it used to be.

My niece begged her mom for a S3 rather than an iPhone because of the bigger screen (looks more like a real diary/address book when dressed in a leather book cover) and customization possibilities for the home screen, and her pals are all going the same way now.

Reading some of the above posts makes me feel like I did a hipster move. Haha.

I'd always had Samsung for the past few years and only this year did I get my first iPhone.

I'm genuinely surprised that Apple's marketing as been as non-existent as it's been lately. With the exception of the holiday commercial, they've done basically nothing to push to 5S since it's launch. They have multiple iPhone 5 commercials last year.

Speaking as someone who had the first android phone (G1), the first galaxy S(Vibrant) and watched this happen I will say that:

Samsung has been making phones that are on-par (or better in some instances) with the iphone hardware-wise since 2010. Some of us were saying so on this forum back when framing android in a good light would get you flamed.

Samsung only started turning on the major marketing machine with the Galaxy S II.... but the large, vibrant display has made them a viable alternative and the Galaxy S2 and galaxy S3 were arguably the most advanced android phones available at the time of their respective releases.

Much like the iphone in its heyday, the galaxy class devices have become ubiquitous every-man devices. A lot of people who own these phones (Galaxy S3 and S4) are not familiar with some of the basic offerings that the google ecosystem offers (like video chats or messaging via hangouts).

The main difference between the galaxy crowd and the i-crowd is that almost no one I know with a Galaxy S2/s3/s4/note has the same hubris about their device that iphone 4 owners had when that phone was king. The galaxy owners understand that a better phone than theirs is probably coming out in another 3 months.

Anyways, Samsung is the biggest name among the lesser-informed device enthusiasts. Most (but not all) people who keep up favor Nexus devices, and there are those who prefer HTC's construction or LG's outside-the-box form factors. There are other manufacturers of course, but I have never met anyone with a Sony/etc android.

It is killing me waiting for the iPhone 6 to come out. I lost my 4 so I had to go back to an old flip phone. I decided not to get the 5s when the 6 is so close. (because I'm hyper sensitive while waiting) It appears to me that everywhere I look someone is pulling out an samsung monster face plater phone. So I started looking closer at them, nice feature set and much more snappy then I thought. Good camera and the battery isn't as bad as I thought.
But in want an iPhone 6. Come in Apple get'er done... Soon

Apple has wasted a lot of time being stubborn as they attempt to avoid catching up to Samsung. I got tired of waiting well over a year ago.

Now I have Apple to thank for pushing me towards Samsung. The experience is far better than I would ever imagined. Especially since my productivity has skyrocketed thanks to SWYPE. It's fast, fun, and ever so reliable.

Same here - although I would change "Samsung" to Android, as I'd rather be using stock Android than TouchWiz (need an at least 5.5" size screen though, so I stick with my Note 2 for now).

But yeah, especially what you say about Swype. I know that I will drool over the iPhone 6's looks, but swipe typing is just too useful for me to pass up. That + the freedom to attach or share anything from any app, and the no fuss access to the file system, will keep me on Android unless something very unlikely happens to iOS. Oh yeah, and Google Keep is wonderful too. My Note 2 has been productivity heaven since I switched from the iPhone.

A 6" Nexus 6 is what I'd like most of all. But failing that, the Note 4 can't come soon enough... :)

One thing is clear to me. Apple needs to stop the habit of the mass release of stuff in the holiday quarter. I think it is gonna bite them. Used to be iPad in March, iPhone in June, iPods in September. Macs year round. Now they save everything until the fourth quarter.

Even if you are sticking with Apple, you still aren't buying anything until fourth quarter and devices all upgrade. I am not saying they won't sell well but I would think that Cook and company would be better served upgrading product lines spaced throughout the year.

Well, I read an article that said Samsung is gearing up for a second straight profit decline due to less than stellar sales numbers so.....

I think the luster has worn off - the marketing has penetrated the market. That's ultimately what drove people to Samsung versus other Android brands.

We're also seeing a saturation of the smartphone market - not there yet, but the growth will continue to slow.

Completely agree....makes the rest of the year hell and probably costs them sales as some decide they don't want to wait and buy one of the new Androids that are released in the Spring.

At my office those who want Android are getting HTC One and non Samsung. I think the build quality is actually hurting Samsung sales.

I think the smartphone space is reaching saturation....... Samsung just released a new phone the S5 so we will see how that goes.
BUT....all bets are off if/when Apple releases a larger iPhone. The rumors are a 4.7 inch screen. If they are true.....you will see it break all existing sales records.....
I think some are waiting to buy a new phone to see if a larger iPhone is coming. Apple should announce this thing ASAP....

I don't think Samsung's bubble has burst just yet.

As great as the M8 is I don't think it will do much better than the M7 did last year.

The techies and geeks like us may think that it's cool to hate on Samsung. However the general public don't know about HTC or nexus phones. They know about iPhones and galaxy phones.

Reading the last dozen or so posts really makes one wonder why?

WHY didn't Apple start offering iPhones in a variety of screen sizes first? Or at least start offering them when they saw Android competitors giving consumers a choice in screen sizes.

They blew it, they have so much money, so many skilled people, yet their beloved iPhone is dwarfed by competitors in size and getting out-featured in some areas. Apple has missed out on millions in sales of larger screen phones.

I wrote similar comments here a few years ago. Still Apple sits with a 4" screen and nothing likely until this fall. It's too late, they're doing nothing fast enough to meet the need.

It's hard to understand why. Not enough manufacturing capacity, stubbornness, arrogance, too big to move swiftly??

They seem slow to react, Phones, Displays, PC's ... a lot of people waiting for updates and new features but it all comes slowly if at all. Strange.

Anyone who reads the reviews the M8 is getting will quickly find out the camera is basically the same camera as last year and is not improved at all. HTC missed a golden opportunity to seize market share based on the S5's lukewarm reception. HTC just can't seem to get out of it's own way.

Agree, this year would have been great opportunity for HTC

I agree. Apples desperate to catch up after allowing 2013 to elapse without anything new from the Cupertino company. This year it's been and continues to be all talk. Failing to bring the larger of the two rumored iPhone 6 models to market together is also a very dumb move. I don't believe they can't get the larger screen, everyone else is using. We are witnessing supreme profit taking as they milk the old products for all they can. Only Apple logo lovers continue to buy.

Laughed at "anything new", "larger screen" and "Apple logo lovers".

Samsung phones are very popular, but in my line of work I see way more iPhone's in use than anything else. It used to be Blackberry before that. Another good gage is public transport. I look around and see what people are using and its clear the iPhone is still hugely popular. I see a lot of teenagers with the 5C in various colours. One phone I don't see often is the Note. I think its size makes it impractical for many people and its either a phone you love or hate. I know people who own it and love it, but they are few and far between in my experience.

My advice to the OP is to wait a few more months and get a cheapy phone to see it through. :)

Interesting. I'm also from the UK. I commute through London and on the Tube I see iPhones and Samsung galaxy phones. Not the note 3 but mainly the S3/S4.

I'm sure you do. I commute in London occasionally but it's only a fraction of the transport network in the UK to consider. I expect both brands are popular as I suggested, it's just in my experience I see more iPhones in general. :)

Oh yes I would agree, you do see more iPhones overall. On my commute I'd say it's like 50 % iPhones, 45 % Samsung and 5% other.

Although some places you go it is oddly only iPhones. I went to a baby shower last weekend and everyone had an iPhone apart from me :apple:

One key element Samsung never gets enough credit for is the camera. True, they get criticized for boring designs and plastic build quality. They get criticized for alot of bloat, useless gimmicky features, and TouchWiz. They became very popular because of their stronger marketing budget. People love to hate Samsung as much as Apple.

But Samsung does usually make the best all-around smartphones out there. Only top OEM that provides a removable battery. And camera is one of many importances for a consumer. HTC and Motorola have better build quality. But their camera sensors are terrible by comparison. But Samsung, LG, and Sony seem to gobble up the best camera sensors. And Samsung seems to provide the most all-around features among Android OEM's.
