I reckon waiting it out is the best thing to do at this point. I'd also love nothing more than to grab a Max for the exact same reason as you, for the bigger screen, but I'm hangin' tough!

Kneezmo,

I think people are just getting jacked off with the situation and coming to the conclusion that there is stuff all they can do about it. It's out of their hands at this point.

i think the same.. only rest wait for an update and see if anything changes or no. middle november is a good timelapse to see if apple solve this or just skip xs generation...

I tend also to agree. With iOS 12.1 out in more than likely a few days ... see what that brings at a least.

Same here. I think the thread is slowing because most of us have done everything we can. It's unfortunate but personally now I am just waiting to see if/when this is fixed. If it's not then I'll take it up with the senior advisers/Genius bar again... Good luck to all.

Which carrier? None of the major carriers ever supported VoLTE on the 5S, so all calls were made using the CDMA/UTMS networks. WiFi calling was also not supported on Verizon/Sprint on the 5S.

Looping back to this, are you on 12.0.1 or 12.1 Beta? I have not tried using Beta 5 to see if this issue is resolved or not.
I'm on XS with Verizon on the 12.0.1 public release, no beta. Carrier Version is 33.1.

You can install 12.1 beta now. Been running it from the first release. It doesn't change anything.
Been thinking about it. Does it address these LTE issues? Does it address the signal indicator on CarPlay? Are you on Verizon? What is your carrier version?

Folks seem to think XR will come with 12.1. If that is the case ... then obviously today or tomorrow.

Otherwise, then probably in and around the iPad event.

A lot of these LTE issues are the carrriers, my phone is working much better now. I discovered AT&T had me on an unlimited legacy plan with capped data, they made some changes and never told the customers, I got moved to a updated plan and now my reception and data have dramatically improved. If you have been with one carrier for a long time check to see if they are secretly throttling even if they tell you they are not.

I can understand how this might be the case for a few folks, but I'm on newer plan, and the connection differences between my 8+ from yesterday (the day I traded it in) and my new XS this morning are night and day. It honestly seems related to an antennae/software issue--the connection barely holds on to LTE, and drops down to 4G constantly, with the data coming in at a trickle.

I have two other phones on my plan: an SE and a 7. Only the XS has these issues.

I’m very happy for you that the change seems to have fixed things for you, but a lot of the issues that people are having relate to not being able to connect at all. It’s completely possible that I just don’t understand the technical aspect of cellular connection well enough to get it, but I have a difficult time seeing how throttling could be causing me to not be able to get a signal and why my iPhone 8+ still works perfectly?

So how many people here are going to pre-order a new iPhone in 2019? I hope everyone here has learned their lesson

Hah, true that. Though I didn't pre-order; I waited over a month. It's still my fault though--I had read about the issue, and believed it only impacted a small number of people. And maybe that's true too, and I'm just really, really unlucky.

Throttling, in the simplest terms, reduces your data speed on the network.

The question is if that is reflected in your signal strength indicator. Being throttled means being de-prioritized.. so it would seem that it’s possible that people who are being throttled would see a weaker signal.

Experts can elaborate/correct.

I drover 5,000 miles with my 8 and Max side by side. Literally side by side. The 8 performed admirably. The Max registered ‘No Service’ a significant portion of the trip, told me I had no internet at times when it actually showed LTE, and failed to reconnect to LTE in places where my 8+ had a strong LTE connection. Both phones on the same plan. The conclusion that this is a ‘throttling’ issue simply doesn’t compute in my limited noggin’ as both phones are on the same data plan.

No one is making conclusions.
Are you sure both phones are provisioned identically?

Throughout the 124 pages and well over 1000 messages posted on this thread, people are reporting a variety of connectivity issues (e.g. inability to make calls, download/upload speeds inferior to an older iPhone tested at the same time on either LTE or wifi, and others).

There are probably various different causes. That’s why some “fixes” (e.g. updating to 12.0.1, returning your XS/Max and getting a replacement, others) work for some people but not others, and why some explanations (e.g. throttling) are causing some people’s issues but not others.

So if you find a “fix” that works for you, it might work for some people so please share it, but probably won’t work for most.

Same with new cars. Never buy a first year model. With phones going $1,000+ best to adopt the same buying philosophy with phones. I bought two new flat screens for the house this year. I waited a full year for price to drop, full reviews from users, and pros, and neither of my tv’s cost what a XS or Max does. Price goes up I am likely to reasearch extensively. Less price, I care less.

We tried different SIM cards and even switched them between the two phones. Nothing improved the performance of the Max’s. Not sure what else we could have done. If there’s a magical fix that I haven’t learned about, I’m all ears, though I’ve already returned both Max’s while under the 14 days after they offered equally abysmal performance.

The fact as it appears to me is that MANY people have experienced significant issues with the new phones (I personally tried 2), and whereas a few people have found something that seems to ‘fix’ their own issue, those ‘fixes’ do not appear to actually be addressing the difficulties that the majority encounter.

Apple has been following up with me daily on this issue as I have the exact same experience as you. I've submitted logs from several devices (Intel X, Qualcomm X, and iPhone XS and XS Max) and they haven't revealed any conclusions but they seem to really be digging to see what's going on and no version of iOS has proved a change for the better. I'm still getting dead-zoned in well covered areas that are proved operable by non XS devices on the same carrier, tower, and band. The thing that worries me is that my issue will be taken seriously by engineering but any public response, should it come out, will be very lackluster on responsibility and it will be some brushed off reason why the issue happens and not an actual admittance of a defect in design.

i think this is the best option now. I prefer buy pass gen.. i buy a new X.. all works well, less prize. And i dont thing im loosing so many news or features. My opinion. For this, for a car, for new tv..

My thoughts as well. Best case scenario, engineering determines an issue that they can resolve with a fix. Worst case scenario they report to management some design flaw causing poor reception. Then it's out of their hands and we know that higher ups would rather do damage control and not issue a big statement and certainly not any admission of guilt. At which point those of us who had been in communication with Apple get radio silence and the average consumer is none the wiser.

Haha. I know I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll hang out in the background and read MacRumors for a month or so before jumping in next year.

Not me. I’m an early adopter by nature, and as long as I still get 14 days to be an ‘early returner,’ too, I’ll order right away. I purchase outright anyway, and if I can take it back, there’s not much risk.
