I found this Verizon forum post from 2016 that I thought was interesting, because if you read through all 11 pages, it sounds EXACTLY like this thread--except it's for the iPhone 7.

This actually seems to be a recurring issue with new iPhone launches for some reason...
No, I don't use any bluetooth in my vehicle. Are you sure it’s not Bluetooth dropping out?

Naw, it's through the car's USB port. I have Sync3 on my car. That’s how CarPlay is connecting to your phone...

That is possible. I think, though with all these reports of weird LTE issues on the XS, that it could very well be an apple issue and a Ford issue. Ford sends out updates a few times a year, so maybe a fix from apple and a fix from Ford would make this issue better? Possible.. Sync3 worked FANTASTICALLY with my iphone 7 for a couple years, however.Oh! I didn’t know that was an option. Definitely eliminates Bluetooth, but maybe it’s a Sync3 glitch then
I heard back from Apple and this was the rep's response. View attachment 797994

The iPhone 7 issue was a bit different. I definitely experienced the iPhone 7 & Verizon issues and it took awhile before the issues were 100% resolved. It may have taken ~8 weeks overall and 2-3 iOS & carrier updates before the issue went completely away (i.e. it got better after 1 patch but the first patch didn't fix 100% of the issues for everyone). There was a giant thread here on MacRumors about this issue back in 2016.
Both my iP7 and my wife's iP7 would go to "no service" in random spots (and not necessarily in the same spots). Sometimes mine would say "no service" when hers would show several bars and vice versa when we were in the car together.
A year later and people still going on about the notch. It's on all the new iPhones. Get over it.
This is bad
When I returned my second Max yesterday, the Apple return guy asked if there was anything wrong with the phone. I told him about the cellular connectivity issues and he said “hmmm”. When I told him I bought an X at Best Buy, he said that he was surprised that they had any left. He also said that he also had an X. That was it. No trying to get any further information from me.Clearly the messaging changes depending on the support person:

I love the notch. I wish my iPad had it.

No challenge, offer for replacement or did not say, never heard that.
Yup, same story.. Sometimes it will sit there showing full signal (this is just on my charging stand, not connected). Then I'll pick it up and a flood of updates and notifications will flow in, just from unlocking it... Lovely!I have an XS max on Verizon. I’ve had it a little over a week and just experienced my first reception issue. Today while I was at work my reception dropped to 1x. I usually have full bars. I was busy and thought nothing of it and put it in my pocket. When I went to leave work I checked my phone in the car before I started it and it said 1x. I tried sending a text to no avail. I turned my phone off and back on and got a flood of texts and a voicemail and fill LTE reception
And and and...Aluminum instead of steel. I think it's a combination of a bad design with the extra 4x4mimo band that mixed particularly poorly with the barrier of steel. It was a drop-off from the 8plus to the X in terms of rf, but not that noticeable, and the only real diff was steel. The Xr was much better. It's still using the same antenna design as last year's X.

The XR goes back to the trusty and reliable 8plus aluminum and no 4x4mimo. The FCC lab tests looked great compared to my now returned 3rd XS max. The XS is a little better than the XS Max, so that skewed the results and diagnosis, but it proved (in my mind) that the steel is something you have to nail in terms of antenna placement as just a slight change could really mess it up.
Now I totally understand the notch not bothering someone as that’s what I discovered while using the Max, but LOVE the notch? Why would you love it? Wouldn’t we all rather have an edge-2-edge screen with no impedance whatsoever?
