I reluctantly switched from my much loved 7+ and never looked back. My xs max is better in every way. Love Face ID (thought I’d hate it) and its much faster. Also love the display. I’m on Verizon if that helps.
Is your X qualcomm or intel? If qualcomm do you see a lot of difference between the 2? In real world use it doesn’t seem like there is much difference? The reset network settings above gave me back my typical speeds as posted above. Typically my Qualcomm X on AT&T doesn't do any better with the poor AT&T cell reception we get near NORAD.
I've posted my X gets similar slow speeds at home, and when I'm downtown it runs about half the speed of the Xs Max with a strong signal on each phone. For the past year I've been turning off LTE on my X when I'm home, but had not needed to turn it off on my 7+ to maintain calls and data (but still only 1 bar showing).
I have to use WiFi 99% of the time when I'm home, but when I walk my dog in the neighborhood I can miss calls if I don't turn off LTE. If I use xfinitywifi hotspots emanating from the neighbor's homes while on a walk, then I lose wifi-calling every time I walk too far away and haven't reached the next hotspot.
My 7+ has a Ting.com SIM for emergencies which is a VMNO on T-Mo towers, and to test it's LTE speed and reception I would have to swap in an AT&T SIM or otherwise I'd pay $3 to Ting for every Speedtest done on LTE ($6/mo to use it for 1-100 phone calls, add $3 to use 1-100 texts, and another $3 to use the first 100MB of data.
My wife's 7 also gets 1 bar LTE at home, and if she's not on wifi-calling it drops calls occasionally. My Air 2 and her Mini 4 also have 1 bar of LTE, so I'll test all the speeds on LTE this week, but we're basically living in a coverage black hole.

Please read my post again for some of the answers, and if you still have questions ask me again. Thanks.

I’m too lazy to read all the posts.
The poll states over half have the issue. I’m sure a large percentage of those that don’t do not know what to look for etc so my guess is most have this to some degree and it might be resolved with the new screens in the 5 as they will be a different manufacturer in japan. I think cherry picking will be a pain. Best just hold off until the next version or live with the imperfection of its not to bad.
My MaX has had the best cellular reception on any iPhone I have owned, hands down.
It is so baffling. I believe that there are those having zero issues. Myself, I tried two (AT&T version and unlocked) and both had wifi and LTE connectivity issues. Both showed problems within two days of owning them. I returned both to the Apple Store. Not sure why some have no issues and others do...this is one of the strangest issues I've seen.My MaX has had the best cellular reception on any iPhone I have owned, hands down.

I'd have to say the same. Yesterday, I was in a theater where no previous phone I have had has had any reception at all. My XS Max had 1-2 bars and I was able to load email and web sites.
Hopefully not during the movie...
I had the same experience with 2 unlocked Maxes back in the fall both were returned. It is so baffling. I believe that there are those having zero issues.
