Is there the equivalent of 3D Touch on the new Samsung Galaxy S8?

I use the 3D Touch on the iPhone all the time, often for the Safari app to open a new tab.

Is there an equivalent feature on the new Samsung Galaxy S8, where I can open a new tab quickly like with iPhone?

I think the home button area in in nav bar is pressure sensitive

But that area is too slim. You could not let app send all actions requiring force touch to that area. Wait... might be other ways.

Google Android since the release of 7.1 has had the ability for "quick app shortcuts" similar to force touch on iPhones (minus the physical sensation).

I use this function regularly to navigate on various apps on my Google Pixel. For example, if i long press on the Google Maps icon, I get quick app shortcuts to navigate to home or navigate to work (very useful!). Long press the Chrome icon gives you quick app shortcut to open a new tab or open a new incognito tab.

I guess you need to wait for the S8 to update to 7.1 to get that functionality (how soon will you get 7.1 you ask.. well that's a discussion for another day).

Nova launcher and Action launcher (among others) both support shortcuts. I am currently using action launcher, and if I swipe up on an app, I get the 3d-touch like shortcuts.
Touchwiz, for some reason, replaced the app specific shortcuts with system-wide actions, such as uninstall.
I always, no matter the phone, end up on action launcher or nova. Third party launchers like these are some of the best parts of android.

Believe it or not you can do it without special hardware as stated Nova Launcher has something similar. Oh yeah and the home button on the S8 has equivalent force touch.

Honestly, force-touch was one of the most over-hyped features since the introduction of Siri. I never used either.

That being said, if you have integrated that kind of feature into your usage, then the above launchers I mentioned will serve you equally well, if not better. The ability to swipe for shortcuts with action launcher, I find to be a quicker solution.

Honestly, force-touch was one of the most over-hyped features since the introduction of Siri. I never used either.

They were over-hyped until iOS10, in my opinion. I use them daily now, for clearing notifications, keyboard cursor, closing tabs, etc. I didn't notice how often until I tried switching to an SE, and missed it so much that I went back.

I'm not convinced long press will cut it for me.

At this point, it does not seem like the new Galaxy S8 has a similar feature.

I gave up force touch and got Gmail as my default email app, chrome as my default browser, Google Maps as my.... well you get the picture.

It's a gimmick that Huawei first reintroduced recently on the Mate S after the 2008 Blackberry Storm but like 3D touch the hype quickly died off due to fragmentation since not all devices have it while long touch is universal with every display.

Might as well combine the other gimmicks like retina, live photos, imessage, etc. into one thread that 90% of the world don't really care about. No need for a thread per gimmick.

I have it on my 7+ and it is kinda useless imho. I mean sometimes it is nice to look at an email...but then you just have to go back to your mailbox anyway so it kinda adds a step. Like the music app and 3DT...useless. It does not give me any information i need. It would be useful if it let me cycle through my playlists but it doesn't. I get an option to add a widget and a Beats playlist that does not exist. I stopped using it altogether because it did not return anything useful and I got tired of it.

Globally it's Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, etc. and although they're proprietary they have broad cross-platform support unlike imessage. Universal RCS is what's needed to replace SMS/MMS. On my WIFI only iPads I use SMS/MMS via Hangouts with Google Voice # so everyone can message me or even call me via landline. imessage can't do that so that makes 'continuity' another hyped gimmick.

Simple answer ... No

I do like how force touch gives you previews of any link you press on. But that's only on Safari. I don't see it being faster than the standard long press menu, being that you have to press even harder once the review pops up to have it create a new tab. Selecting choices like copy or share link is something I do a lot, and Safari with force touch you have to touch a link so lightly to get that selection menu, which takes longer than a standard long press. Especially if your trying to do so while walking.

iMessage has no installation, just works. It's irrelevant to the marketshare of messaging apps my view of iMessage. To put this in context These and other "gimmicks" that Apple sells on its hardware accounts for for 79% of the industry profits. Apple must be doing something right besides selling gimmicks.

And bye. WhatsApp isn't proprietary?
