Out of all the apps it's the first one to use your actual phone number.it is by far the best app to use if you have family or friends around the world.

There is no name id you need to make,no pin,no apple I'd,no Facebook etc or Gmail like on Hangouts.

I7 guy if you had my phone number stored in your phone and downloaded WhatsApp that is all you need to do.

Just download it and you are good to go.for people that don't have iMessage it's a no brainier.its free and can send high resolution pictures and videos and will act like iMessage on other devices.

Try sending a video using sms and see how it comes out.

Do people in the US use what's app to message other people in the US?

I'm a young American, and I have heard of what's app but don't use it.

None of my friends do I don't think. They are all American.

Simple answer is No. people that I know use these third party apps for free international texting across other countries. Same with Wechat. I haven't seen anyone that not use iMessage on iOS. Yeah it's a gimmick if you're on other OS platform. Lol

Well yes and no. Most people in the US that use Whatsapp is initially because they have family and friends in other countries. But the people that use Whatsapp in the US, also use it amongst each other. Diverse areas like costal states and cities, you'll see a lot more people using Whatsapp.

You can't send a video on SMS and nobody would say SMS is anything but the most basic method without any frills, bells and whistles. I know whatsapp is a popular communication platform and has had a number of enhancements (from the ios blog), but out of my circle only two people use it and both of them have iphones. Disparate messaging platforms is an issue, but most of my circle has iphones, which is why I don't use whatsapp. (I did try it when it was free for a year and thereafter pay $.99. I deleted the app prior to the year trial being over.)

Honestly, force-touch was one of the most over-hyped features since the introduction of Siri. I never used either.

That being said, if you have integrated that kind of feature into your usage, then the above launchers I mentioned will serve you equally well, if not better. The ability to swipe for shortcuts with action launcher, I find to be a quicker solution.

Some aspects of force touch I like and other aspects are useless.

9 times out of 10 I rarely use force touch from the home screen to access shortcuts. In app functionality is where I find the interaction to be more beneficial.

A worthless feature for me. I could turn it off and never notice it. Don't like the fact that it's a lottery as to whether an app supports it or not

When I first used Force Touch I thought it was very impressive.

Then I used Long Press on certain Android phones/Nova Launcher and realised Force Touch is kind of unnecessary :D

As for WhatsApp, yeah America is iPhone/iMessage heavy but the rest of the world uses WhatsApp. It's platform agnostic so it's pretty much one of the most essentials apps there is. I mean everyone in the UK uses WhatsApp (or at least has it).

Yes, I just force press a new app to see if it works or not. Maybe developers can put a small pop up saying that the app supports 3D touch.

Its a guessing game basically.
But I do like it and use it when its convenient.

I actually have more people in my contacts using Viber than Whatsapp.

For people who have used both its pretty much the same thing except long press on Android is more predictable than 3DT

They should also allow us to customise the menu. My muscle memory keeps forgetting it because of lack of support or worthwhile menus. The only place where I use it consistently is the Apple Keyboard to move the cursor

My primary use of force touch is to activate the app switcher. Just press on the left side at the edge of your iPhone and the app switcher shows up. It saves ware and tear on the home button and is more comfortable to use than the home button on the plus sized iPhone. I am left handed too so it is perfect for me.

Mechanical home buttons are so 2015.

It would be more useful if it were not for the fact that the left 3DT doesnt work if you have a glass screen protector

Yes you can send a video on sms it looks like 1980s compressed crap but you can do it and it's that way on any sms platform.if I text you from my phone through sms and send a video you would see how bad it is.

Technically, you cannot send video or even pictures via SMS. It is strictly text. Sending video or pics uses MMS. While SMS used/uses unused cell control channels, making it easy to deploy and low cost for carriers, MMS uses data. When it was released mobile data was still expensive, and slow, so sizes were capped. Even today if your cell plan includes free SMS/MMS you can send as many pics, and if you are sadistical vids), as you want and the data used won't count against your plan. So there is no real incentive for carriers to increase MMS limitations, especially with all the alternatives out there (that do use your data :)).

Ditto. I have no problem activating left edge force touch with my screen protector ....

______

Reading through this thread essentially what we have it seems is, "If I don't use a feature on a device, it is thereby universally worthless" ....
That is a universal theme on many threads. :)

i havent learnt to use 3D touch. i used it with a launcher app, but since then i feel i do thinks much quicker without waiting the 3D to be operational and then choose what im going to do. Sometimes it also activates "remove the app" or opens the app rather than popping up the 3D features.

btw. Samsung had already on 2012 same functionalities packed on their devices and called as air view.. and later came air command. 3D touch is a mimic of that.

Samsung removed that feature for whatever reason. 3dt will he supported on flagships going forward.

For me, 3dt has been made more useful in iOS 10 and fundamentally changed my interaction with the device.

3d touch is LESS than worthless on my iPhone. It just complicates long press because now I have to be aware of how much pressure I put on the screen, I have to pause what I'm doing and switch my attention. I've played around with the sensitivity settings and it still sucks. Plus the way 3d touch is incorporated in apps, and even within Apple apps themselves, is quite convoluted and confusing at times. I find it's much quicker just to open an email then press the back button, versus 3d touching it and getting a weird UI with a weird, incomplete view of the email, just as one example.
