Just got my iPad Pro today and was scrolling through MacRumors, and started to notice a yellow smear when scrolling. It usually happens when Night Shift is on. With it off, its not so bad.

Is that one of the brand new M2 iPad Pros?

I have the same issue since updating to iPadOS 16.1, but on an 2021 M1 12.9 iPad Pro.

Someone else?

I made a video to shows the difference between my old 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 and the new one. Both has dark mode on and night shift on.

Copying my post here from another thread:

I’m having this same issue with my new M2 12.9” iPad Pro. When dark mode is enabled along with either Night Shift or True Tone, there is an awful motion blur effect causing white text to turn red and look very distorted while scrolling (just as you showed in your video). I upgraded from an M1 12.9” Pro that did not have this issue. I figured the displays would be identical, but clearly something has changed. I don’t know if it’s a software problem or an inherent issue with the display.

I fired up my M1 12.9” iPad Pro before I sell it later today. I turned on dark mode, Night Shift, and True Tone and placed it directly next to my new M2 12.9” iPad Pro with the same settings enabled. Both are running iPadOS 16.1.

No issues at all on the M1 iPad. White text remains white and does not distort while scrolling. M2 has the problems I mentioned above: white text turns red while scrolling and appears distorted.

So, this appears to be a hardware issue. I’ll be taking it into the Apple Store soon.

Yeah at this point I’m just going to return it and keep my iPad Pro 2020. Was really excited for the screen, but this yellow smear it leaves behind is unacceptable.

For those who didn't see the other thread: my M1 12.9" started having the issue immediately after the 16.1 update. So it's not just the new iPads, and it has to have at least something to do with iPadOS 16.1. My scrolling was fine for the past 12 months prior to the update.

I wonder if this only affects the microLED iPads because I updated my 2020 iPad and it still looks fine.

That's my guess. Anyone with 12.9" M1 or M2 iPad Pro and 16.1 who doesn't see the color issues: if you open a dark mode reading app, do you see text significantly dimming when you scroll? I see it the most in Kindle and GoodLinks since the update, but elsewhere too.

I see it a lot on the App Store, settings app, and Apollo Reddit App

Yeah, I think it has something to do with iPadOS 16.1, at least for the older iPads. I have the 11" M1 and noticed it was different after upgrading. For me, white text will sometimes turn yellowish when scrolling, but not always...and not as severe as seen in the videos above. I only notice it sometimes when True Tone is turned on. Perhaps it has to do with my surroundings, since that's how True Tone works. I don't notice it when using Night Shift, since white text is already yellowish when using that. Also don't notice it when True Tone is off.

It is definitely an iPadOS 16 problem. I temporarily downgraded to 15.7 and scrolling was absolutely fine. After re-upgrading to 16.1, it‘s broken again. Hopefully this is going to be fixed in 16.2.

wish I knew how to downgrade to test it out. Think I’m just going to return it and once the issue has been resolved I’ll buy it again.

Downgrading to iPadOS 15 won't be possible on the M2 iPad Pros. Your only options are to return, set up a service appointment with Apple, or wait for a possible bug fix in future iPadOS updates.

I've set up an appointment at my closest Apple Store for tomorrow afternoon. At the very least, I want to see if the display models at the store have this same issue. I will report back.

I can confirm as well - I reverted my 12.9" M1 iPad Pro back to 15.7 and scrolling is fine: no more discoloration, dimming, or blur.

I returned the original M2 iPad Pro I received yesterday and purchased a replacement. Told the Apple Store employee about the issue and he had never heard of it. The new one has the same screen issue described in this thread. I’m really hoping this can be fixed with a software update. For now I’ll just disable Night Shift. Very disappointing.

I now can also see it. There is a blur and a color shift. It is not as pronounced as in your video though. Might be a software bug indeed.
