Micheal Dell has sent an email to Steve Jobs expressing his great intrest in offering Mac OS X to his pc customers. Jobs doesnt feel like its time, even thought the quality of the hardware his company produces is getting worse and not better.

There would be so many more ppl willing to switch to os x if they could do so on a pc. I would pay 300 bucks or more for the os x software if it was lisenced for pc's and i could get tech and customer support. Microsoft doesnt sell hardware the same way apple does, because they concentrate on writing software. They let other companies worry about the hardware.

Steve Jobs would be a much richer man if he concentrated on Software and iPods. Its better to make a few things extraordinary then alot of things half assed.

Right now Apple has to support maybe 200 different official hardware configurations. If Apple were to license it's OS to the PC world at large that number leaps into the thousands. Suddenly you have driver issues in OS X, and I don't want to waste time dealing with that, I've heard too many horror stories about that.

People seem to forget the fact that OS X only costs 129 dollars ( i think) and well most revenue comes from the computers themselves

Apple's business model is using software to sell hardware. Sorry if you don't approve, but it's working damn well for them.

And I hardly think anything apple makes is "half-assed."

We all know that Apple is not as big of a company as Dell or Microsoft, but they are a Fortune 500 company that consistently yields large profits. Apple is doing just fine, and it's thanks to Steve's decisions.

First off.. Apple is a hardware company. They make most of their money from hardware sales. They don't make anything off OS X. If they did, you would think they might put in some sort of keys/serials. For the moment (and historically) it's been honor system.

Second off.. as noted by stoid. Look how many drivers and deivices that Microsoft has to build compatability into EACH iteration of their OS AND their patches? Why would anyone KNOWINGLY get hit between the eyes with that hammer? As Apple controls the hardware (mostly), Apple controls and limits their support headaches.

Third off.. what has OS X being on a PC got to do with it? If you need a new computer and want to try OS X, buy a Mac Mini.

Fourth off.. it's not like exisiting PC users will do a half-assed switch to OS X when none of their software will run. Switching takes a major step!


IF (maybe when) Apple decides to cash out on it's hardware sales and go fully software.. it will be a VERY slow, safe set of steps. It definitely won't be because Mike Dell emails Steve Jobs and says "gimmie".

I also think SJ is rich enough, didn´t he just have to sell off alot of his stocks to cover a tax claim?

While he's at it, I think he should make it so you can play iTunes on other MP3 players. After all, everyone knows that iTunes is where the money is NOT the iPod.

(have to change clothes, dripping with sarcasm)

EDIT: Of course, everyone knows that Michael Dell is just pulling a publicity stunt hoping that everyone looks at this and comes away from it thinking Steve Jobs is an ***hole. He knows that Dell will suffer greatly if Macs start running Windows (well without having to be hacked that is)

I think that's what Apple is already doing. Making a great OS for a limited range of computers rather than trying to make it run on every PC out there.

And yet everyone's favorite love-to-hate darling, Microsoft, makes software and posted 2005 revenues of $12.2 billion.

I think there's some validity in their business model, too.

You have to remember Apple is a hardware company, they make far more money selling computers than they do selling software. The Mac OS is just one of the great benefits from owning an Apple Computer.

Apple Hardware Sales > Apple Software Sales

Microsoft is a software company.

Apple makes most of their money on hardware.

BMW could switch to Microsoft's business model as well, but I don't think that would help them now would it?

Sure, there's more than one way to make a buck. But Apple has something that is working very well for them; why change just because there's something else that also works for another company?

It's just the list of all of his posts....every single one says how the hardware sucks, and how Lenovo (who are despised in China because of their quality) is so good.

That's quite a claim. What evidence do you have to substantiate this? And anecdotal evidence from MR posters doesn't count.
