And you're basing that on..?

Edit: I'm guessing you're going to reply with "well, this time last year". We've only had one update of the iPhone to base the rumour time scale on.

However, there are more items pointing to an imminent iPhone release than there are against it:

  • New iPhone OS - the biggest one
  • AT&T allowing Refurbished iPhones to be sold cheaply for water damaged handsets
  • O2 lowering tariffs and letting iPhones go for free on cheaper contracts
  • Apple buying chip-making companies
  • Apple negotiating with more networks (China, for example)
  • Apple placing large orders for NAND memory

I expect I've missed some out, too.

Erm... the thread title? Is that not clear?

Your sarcasm is noted, and forgotten.

Now, to supply you with an answer.

Simply because Apple or some other company haven't leaked photo's doesn't mean its not coming.

Apple is known for being very secretive with its designs. Its only over the past few years we have had more and more spy shots.

Basing "we haven't seen a photo!! ZOMG there's no new iPhone!!!" makes much less sense than basing "there will be a new iPhone" on the "Apple is working on a new version of the iPhone OS, Apple are employing more iPhone staff, O2 and AT&T are getting rid of stock, Apple are buying more NAND chips.." rumours/news.

something is wrong

It's called it's not yet ready, but they didn't confirm a date as to when it was coming so they're not late, and we can just wait and chat till WWDC when we'll know more, as we'll get more rumors as it gets nearer, and don't panic...

If the OP can actually tell us when the 1st shot of a genuine iPhone 3g was? ;)
The casing info came first as far as I recall - and i'd imagine Apple's busted their balls over the last few things - seeing as the made for iPod issue is such a great contract, to leak info would be to get a serious dressing down from Apple.

We had O2 EOLing the handsets by 8th May, but why would they now? It'll just be a lower plan - if they want to stock the iPhone 3G as the base model, and then have the new model as the better version. Apple could phase in updated iPhone 3G versions if they wanted to.

May 11

Apple can dampen the Palm Pre announcement by showing off what can be done with OS 3.0 at WWDC, then release when they're ready. If that means us waiting, then so be it.

Ok...

so just because we haven't seen anything means that it's not coming out?

It's pretty much a given. Apple has pretty much said so.

Exactly.

These other 2 would be the first in line to complain should they release the iPhone next week and it didn't work properly

Like I said before, they don't have a schedule to adhere too.

Put another way OP -
May 11th last year, GPS functionality was still not believed by some in the tech world, and hedge betted about in other sections. I'd say users here at macrumors had more belief and detail about it than most other places. toot toot.

9to5mac:

While by no means conclusive evidence of GPS capabilities in the iPhone camera software, the latest builds of the SDK are littered with GPS references. Whether these are just templates (you can see other camera manufactures included as well) or needed by the 3G iPhone camera software is unknown.

GPS camera software is used to put location (landmark) metadata into the photo files. Applications like Flickr, and Google earth use this data to arrange photographs (and videos) spatially based on this information. For instance, if you snapped a picture in Paris, you could later organize you pictures - perhaps in iPhoto? - by Country/city. Cool!

We'll leave the speculation to you. More screengrabs below. One month to go...

The keynote dates weren't even announced last year by now. We were talking about how an Apple tablet would be a Kindle killer, eBook reader a whole year ago :D

About the possibilities of TV on the phone - now we know that's coming via Qualcomm's Media Flo.

Not sure when we got the Golden Gate bridge poster - anyone remember?

I've been wondering this myself. It seems like there are typically more leaks by now.

However, I think a couple things are different that make leaks less likely this early:
1. Apple now has more experience with vendors and may be better able to manage leaks. Also, a lot of what they buy is no longer surprising.
2. If Apple actually does custom design the chip for this year (unlikely), then they can keep that under wraps.
3. I think most of the improvements will be inside: better camera, faster processor, better battery life, more RAM and SS memory. We already have the camera rumor and the SS memory rumor, and more RAM would be difficult to track. The lack of good rumors about processors is a little more puzzling, but see #1 and #2.

I suspect Apple will announce the new iPhone at the developer conference and ship sometime in July.

Maybe this just means there won't be any major cosmetic changes this year. We already have a picture of the supposed matte back and there really weren't as many leaks of the iPhone 3G as you think. There were only 2 (one of the white, one of the black) and the rest were fake. I think right now we're focusing on software rumors and leaks, like video recording, video editing, etc.

How can you say that?

If you'd gone through maybe 2/3/4/5 revisions of the iPhone and had a record of release dates/leaks etc, then sure.

We've seen one major iPhone revision change, people.

Just because it happened that way last year doesn't mean it has to or will this year.

i think you all need to chill out....

think about some of the products released in the last year or so.

Most of the rumors about the macbook air came out less than 24 hours prior to its announcement...and i don't even think i remember ever seeing a leaked photo of it.

The unibody macbooks brought some heavy rumors, but rarely were there leaked pictures...there were a bunch of fake mockups....the only legit leaks were the pictures of the bottom casing, and the pictures of the unit as a whole that came out just days before it's announcement

Anyways, I'm not worried about the rumor mill being quiet...i think there is fact enough to assume that there will be a new iPhone this year (mass purchase of NAND flash, mass purchase of camera lenses, etc....)

I knew there was something I'd forgotten!

Also, the whole iPhone 1,2 and 2,1, 2,2 or whatever they do. They found a new model in the 3.0 OS. As well as compass-related things which the current hardware doesn't support.

Kardashian needs to chill IMO. The OP simply noted that it's odd for there to be so little information about the next iPhone revision. Apple is certainly very secretive, but there has been a trend towards more reliable leaks (for example with the unibody notebooks, Mac Mini revisions, some iPhone OS 3.0 features).

Nobody is claiming this definite evidence that there isn't going to be a new iPhone, and we're just going by anecdotal timelines, but we would expect some news by now.

Why? I'm calm enough, thank you.

Just b/c I'm actively posting doesn't mean I need to "chill".

The OP simply noted that it's odd for there to be so little information about the next iPhone revision.

It can't be 'odd' if there's no track record to compare it to. You can't define something as odd when there's no basis for it in the first place.

Apple is certainly very secretive, but there has been a trend towards more reliable leaks (for example with the unibody notebooks, Mac Mini revisions, some iPhone OS 3.0 features).
As someone else noted, the Unibody, Mac mini rumours were days before its release. Not months/a month.

, and we're just going by anecdotal timelines, but we would expect some news by now.

Again, what everyone on my 'side' has siad.

Edit: Apple would expect you to have no news by now. Its the reason they go through the fiasco of a product launch.

Agreed. Nowhere did the OP say that a new iPhone wasn't coming. But let's all jump to conclusions and tell him that he is wrong! ;)

Disagreed.

Nowhere did any of us say the iPhone was coming.

I said it was more likely it was coming, than not coming.

Simply because Apple or some other company haven't leaked photo's doesn't mean its not coming.

You're acting like he said that it wasn't coming though... You wouldn't give an argumentative statement like that if you didn't think he meant the contrary.
