I always felt it was odd that the 15 Pro featuring the A17 Pro and 2 gigs more ram did not really have a major advantage over the regular 15 in terms of additional features offered by the capabilities of the chipset at launch. Especially since Apple bothered to give the new chip a "Pro" label for the first time. But now I think it makes sense: they needed to have at least one iPhone capable of running the new AI for its introduction at WWDC.
Good Point. But until AI Runs Fine we are in spring 2025 so Right now There is no reason to Upgrade a 15 oder 14, especially in non english-countries.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, a fully loaded M4 iPad Pro, and a 16” 2019 MacBook Pro. If I’m right, I guess I’ll have to use my iPad just to do everything when it comes to AI and I’m going to have to buy a new phone someday. I can’t buy a new phone right now because I spent all my money on my iPad and a flight to Vancouver

I use a 13 Mini, and I have no plans to replace this phone in the foreseeable future. I am not upset at all that most of the "Apple Intelligence" features will not be available on my device, in fact, I consider its lack of availability as a feature, not a bug. AI would probably slow down my phone and eat up much of its storage, for "features" that I would probably end up turning off or disabling anyway. I just want to use the phone the way I want to use it, with a minimal amount of "help" from an unwanted source.

AI is atrocious and we don't need to keep putting up with companies shoving it in our faces everywhere.

I find machine learning useful. I'm using it to convert a bunch of SAS code to R code. It's saving me at least a week of work. I might not be asking Siri all that, but with integrated AI/ML models, I'll be able to have ongoing conversations about various work tasks.

I’m okay not having all this ai stuff on my phone I have a iPhone 14 and very happy with it I am going to wait for the 17 series of iPhone because from rumors on here and other places they will have a totally new design for that series and I can wait until next year👍🏻
wait…where are you already hearing about the 17?

Mark, is that you? 😂

Nah, just someone who puts too much stock into Mark Gurman.

Also, smartphones are a mature technology at this point. New designs are just about style over substance. I’d rather have interesting new capabilities in the hardware than a flashy new design.

Can't wait! Hopefully, there's an AI that can completely take over all my posts on here in every capacity.

What, you think you're smarter than Apple Intelligence? Just wait.

We’ve had 6GB RAM since iPhone 12 Pro/Max. Apple putting 8GB on iPhone 15 Pro/Max was fully expected.

The only technical aspect that’s strange is Apple is typically better with memory usage compared to Android. Given Google’s Gemini Nano model requires 8GB and likely performs far better, it’s strange that Apple also needs 8GB with far less features.
Not to mention the previous iPad generations equipped with 1 or 2 TB storage and have 16GB RAM. So clearly it is not the RAM as a defining factor for AI otherwise those iPads should have been easily supported.

This is exactly what I want. AI is atrocious and we don't need to keep putting up with companies shoving it in our faces everywhere.
It's like having a personal assistant working for you. If they found a way to respect your privacy, I don't see why people oppose to this so much, without any serious argument.

Siri is already AI by the way, just a more primitive version.

Actually, the M1 iPad Pro was the first iPad to have the 8/16GB RAM configurations, and those are going to be able to use Apple Intelligence.

My Apple Intelligence is smarter than your Apple Intelligence!

I would Never buy a car without Apple car Play.
whats funny is that the Tesla app is pretty good (industry leading next to BMW) and supercharging for third parties requires an app too and is an ongoing revenue stream. Elon is gonna get Tesla App Store account revoked, epic style.

This is the "upgrade now so you don't have to deal with the x.0 bugs in the fall" time of year.
We disagree. IMO if one will be buying a new tech device anyway, it makes far more sense to purchase promptly upon release rather than doing without the latest tech for 9 months with no value add for waiting that long. Apple's (IMO intentional) leaks, then public announcement, then millions of users having them in-hand in a few weeks mean that thorough purchase decision analysis can be completed by ~October every year.

I have been buying iPhones since the first, skipping ~every other year until ~iPX and since then every year, never finding x.0 bugs that were problematic enough to make me go back to the old phone (that I usually keep in a drawer for ~a month as backup in the event of serious issues) before handing it down to family/friends.

Not supporting this on their current latest "normal" iPhone looks quite terrible for Apple. They have been skimping on RAM in their devices forever now, always giving them as little as they could get away with. You have mid-range Android devices with 12 gigs now, and apple latest iPhone 15 which costs 4 times as much only has 6.

They have been stuffing their SoC with neural engine for years, and now that there is finally a feature which could take advantage of it fully, we are told to upgrade to get it. So in the end, the customer will foot the bill for Apple's bad decisions/greed in terms of future proofing their devices. And for that reason, i have never wanted to switch out of their ecosystem more than i want now.
No. We disagree with the statement "Not supporting this on their current latest "normal" iPhone looks quite terrible for Apple."

Apple has higher end and lower end phones every year. Folks who save a few $$ by buying the lower end may not like it, but of course less features will be supported on the lower end devices.

This first generation ai stuff is going to be really rough and quirky. Definitely beta software.
A few years from now people are going to look back on it with distain.
Missing out on iOS 18 ai isn’t going to be missing anything important- that’s for sure.
You are welcome to the opinion that "Missing out on iOS 18 ai isn’t going to be missing anything important," but be aware that there are others (including me) who disagree.

I would love to buy a purple iPhone 16 Pro to be able to play with the AI stuff (come on Apple, make it happen, purple was so popular!) Odds are better than not that I'll upgrade my 14 Pro to a 16 Pro regardless. For my career, it's advantageous for me to play with all the AI stuff to stay current on what works, what doesn't work, what's scary, what's dangerous. I find it fun too.

As to the topic of this thread... I am curious how much of the A17+/RAM requirement is purely technical vs. pumping up those declining iPhone sales. I can't fault Apple for wanting a hook to sell more devices.
