I can’t say, since I don’t work with iTunes 11.4 or anything later than 10.6.3.

I just pulled up a feed on 10.6.3, installed on Mojave, and everything seems to work as intended.

View attachment 2426945

A couple of suggestions:

1) Double-check you don’t have anything like Little Snitch or LuLu blocking outgoing connections for iTunes.

2) The less-helpful suggestion: consider a clean removal of iTunes 11.4 and install, via Pacifist, 10.6.3.

EDIT to add: Just to be sure, I pulled up a bog-standard, routine install of 10.6.3 on my mid-2007 iMac running 10.6.8 Server:

And also on my mid-2004 Power Mac G5:

Well, I clean uninstall iTunes 11.4 and install iTunes 10.6.3 and Internet radio works with message that iTunes can't connect to iTunes Store. But when I install iTunes 11.4 Internet radio is not working with message I said in my last post. So, I am staying on iTunes 10.6.3 for now.

Glad to hear internet radio is working again.

The inability to connect to the iTunes store is an annoying nag I haven’t figured out how to quiet. I figure this is a deal breaker for folks who buy their music on iTunes/Music, but it has never impacted me or my own library (for which exactly zero songs originate from there).

Can you try this?
Editing hosts and installing Legacy Mac Proxy:

Hosts:
118.27.13.66 phobos.apple.com

118.27.13.66 ax.init.itunes.apple.com

Install Legacy Mac Proxy
It should fix the connection problem (at least for me ) but i cant help with the login!

It just fixes the error on me!

In terminal :
defaults write com.apple.itunes disableMusicStore -bool YES

This does not fix the error on startup but makes the UI cleaner if you don't care about store features :)

I found a precious post here : https://apple.stackexchange.com/que...-downgrade-itunes-11-to-10-7-in-mountain-lion

It help downgrade to iTunes 10.7 without the annoying popup at each launch.

Saved here for preservation purposes:

1) Open Terminal and run:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app

This will delete the iTunes 11 application.

2) If your Music Library is in its default place, also in the terminal:

open ~/Music/iTunes

3) Using Time Machine restore the following files:

  • Album Artwork <– Folder
  • iTunes Library
  • iTunes Library Extras.itdb
  • iTunes Library Genius.itdb
  • iTunes Library.xml
  • iTunes Library.itl
  • iTunes Music Library.xml
  • Previous iTunes Libraries <– Folder
No need to replace your iTunes Music Folder. You may not need to replace all these files but it can’t hurt.

4) Back in the terminal:

open /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks

Use Time Machine again to restore the following files:
(If you don't have those files anymore, just delete those then use Pacifist to install those with admin right from the "iTunes 10.7.dmg" that you can download in next step)

  • AirTrafficHost.framework
  • CoreFP.framework
  • DeviceLink.framework
  • iTunesAccess.framework
  • MobileDevice.framework
5) Download iTunes 10.7

http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg

6) Install iTunes 10.7.

6) Install iTunes 10.7.

These are the same frameworks implicated with installing 10.6.3 on later builds of macOS, including Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave, as well as many needed for 10.4.1 to work in Snow Leopard for PowerPC (Build 10A96).

Everything here, other than installing 10.7 (10.6.3 > 10.7, always), is mostly good advice, but in lieu of whole deletions of these, I use Terminal, under sudo, to rename those frameworks with something like [filename].framework.default or [filename].framework.disabled. This way, one can revert changes later if, say, they want to restore iPhone/iPad sync capability with another version of iTunes.

Hello! I was using Mac OS X Lion with a version of iTunes 12.2.2 and I wanted to try iTunes 10.6.3 (which I had downloaded from here https://support.apple.com/en-us/106393) because I missed Cover Flow mode and wanted to use that feature again. The problem was that when I uninstalled it with sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app and I went to open the application once installed it told me that it had a library problem (bc I had a library of a more recent version), so I went to finder, searched for iTunes and deleted the two folders that appeared, one that was in the library folder and another that was in applications. (if I remember correctly) Now I can open the application but I get this error "A required component of iTunes is not installed. Please reinstall iTunes. (-42401)" I have tried to uninstall it again with sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app and reinstall it, but when I open it again I still get the error. Do you know how I could fix this? Thanks. Best regards.

Hey !

I noticed that trying to manually install iTunes is not really the best thing to do. It looks like Pacifist can just install it very reliably entirely automated (from my tests in Snow Leopard).
You should try using Pacifist and install it through Pacifist with admin rights.

Yah, that’s normal behaviour. It happens only at time of launching iTunes, but it has no impact on iTunes working. The “component” is related to the bundle involved for iPhone/iPad support (a feature I don’t use anyway). It’s low-level annoying, but otherwise harmless.

Lecture not needed here. That marosa32 could get iTunes pulled up and running is sufficient enough to know the method they used worked for them.

Also, the manual list of items on your earlier post is sufficient for a manual install, if one is cosy with the command line.

Thanks for the answers and the help. In the end I thought that the quickest and easiest option was to reinstall the system. Now it has iTunes 10.4 which is the one that is preinstalled. It gave me the option to install the update 12.2.2 (if Apple Music worked it would do so, but in this case it doesn't). Can I go from 10.4 to 10.6.3 by installing it manually, with the installer from the official website? Do you recommend that I do it? I have seen that in 10.4 the store cannot connect. Best regards :)

Yes, 10.4 to 10.6.3 install is fine.

I've used iTunes 10.6.3 for many years on a Mini PowerPC G4 and a PowerBook G4 both from around 2005 or 2006 with no issues. I only have my own ripped CD's, nothing from the Apple Store so no issues there. I've always loved the CoverFlow feature. I also use 10.7 on my 2012 Mac Mini installed with Retroactive.

Also, 10.7 CoverFlow works on Sequoia with Apple Silicon installed with Retroactive so for those who still want the CoverFlow interface on a newer OS, it still works (but no store access).

I recently received a 4th generation iPod Classic with a monochrome display. Since this iPod is second-hand, it is still filled with music from the previous owner, so I want to factory reset it. From what I've read, the only way to do this is by pressing the 'Restore' button in iTunes. However, when I press that button, I receive the following error: 'The iPod software update server could not be contacted.' From what I've gathered in this thread, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Apple is blocking requests from old versions of iTunes, including version 10.6.3. Does anyone know of a way to factory reset my iPod so that I can start using it, preferably with my Power Mac?

I know this question is more suited for the iPod forum, but since I specifically want to do this on a PowerPC Mac, I figured this would be the best place to ask. Additionally, since an iTunes 10.6.3 thread exists, I don't think it warrants its own thread.

Google says this (from a Reddit thread):

I had to put the iPod in disk mode, by pressing menu and center button simultaneously. Once the screen goes dark, press the play/pause button and center button simultaneously until Disk Mode screen appears. Once it's in disk mode, it will connect to iTunes and the prompt will tell you to restore it. Once it is restored. Unplug it. Close iTunes then reopen iTunes. Plug the iPod back in, wait til it connects to iTunes. You should see a welcome screen. Follow the prompts.

If you already have music in your iTunes library: click on the music tab, and check the box that says Sync entire library. The library should sync to your iPod.

Thank you for your reply. I have already resolved the issue by restoring the iPod on a different machine running a more modern version of macOS and iTunes.

However, I still wanted to see if I could do it on the Power Mac. When connecting the iPod to the computer after putting it in Disk Mode, no prompt appears; instead, it just shows up in iTunes as usual. Perhaps this is because it is now formatted for Macintosh rather than Windows, and/or it is already set up and synced with my iTunes library. Even so, I would expect a prompt to restore it.

Aside from the fact that I've moved on to Intel Macs since 2020, I couldn't tell you a reason about iTunes even if I was still PowerPC. I've always hated the app and having to be dependent upon it to interact with my devices. And my devices were/are the sole reason I still may use it.

I moved on to Songbird/Nightingale/Swinsian a long time ago as those apps have music features that iTunes does not. And if I do use iTunes for music (on PowerPC), it's version 4.0 as that version is the only one that allows streaming over the internet.

I'm not sure what you mean here as other versions allow streaming over the internet including 10.6.3 and 10.7 which are the ones I use for music and internet stations/streaming. Are you referring to a specific issue?

It's been a very long time since I last used iTunes, so I don't quite remember it well. The machine I mentioned in my previous post was a quickly thrown-together Hackintosh, created solely for the purpose of restoring the iPod, as I do not use modern macOS. I've never had an iPod before (with the exception of the first-generation iPod Shuffle), but I figured it would be a good way to listen to music on the go. I am aware of Rockbox and third-party applications for music transfer, but those seemed out of the scope of this thread, which leads to the following question:

@Ryan Bremer, is iTunes 10.6.3 still alive? Are there any concrete guides on version spoofing to make iTunes a little more functional on PowerPC?

Adding to my post above, my first encounter with iTunes was version 2.0.4 on a Performa 6400 PowerPC which I still have and even that version can still play internet streaming stations for the most part but they are some it can't due to codecs changing over time. The Internet Radio function does not work as it will try to refresh but does not.

Part of your problem might be the Hackintosh issue but it's hard to say. I never had iPods as I started later with the original iPhone and went from there but when I first purchased it, I was using a PowerBook G4 and used iTunes 10.6.3 to sync music to it and back up apps so the capability was there and might still be.

As for iTunes 10.6.3, it works fine on my Mac Mini G4 and is used daily for music playback as well as internet radio streaming so the software is great depending on what equipment you have.

I think you might have missed part of the posts. To recap: I was unable to restore (factory reset) a second-hand iPod Classic in iTunes on PowerPC because the software can no longer connect to the software update server. I do not use Windows, and instead of opting for Wine or a virtual machine, I decided to quickly set up a Hackintosh installation on a laptop. Crisis averted: I managed to restore the iPod, and it can now be used to sync with iTunes on PowerPC.

I did read all of the posts but when you say you set up a Hackintosh, the assumption would be that you're using a Windows computer and it's hard to say what issues can come up. I've done a Hackintosh and can say that there's a lot of things that don't always work properly similar to what you'll read about in the Open Core Legacy Patcher forum.

The store hasn't worked for some time and that includes some later versions that others have installed using the Retroactive software but music playback, internet streaming, and CD importing/Gracenote features work fine which is what most users are probably using it for at this point.

As for the software update, that does still work so if you received an error, that might have been a network issue. You didn't say what software you used on the Hackintosh to restore the iPod and how that's different from the PowerPC software.

In the context of internet radio you are correct. But in the context of streaming your own library of music, then iTunes 4.0 is the only version of iTunes that allows this. You can use third party solutions of course. But the basic iTunes install requires that to share your music library to other computers running iTunes, all must be on the same network. I.e., you can't stream your music library outside of your home network.

But with iTunes 4.0, I can be anywhere in the world and stream my music library from home. This feature was not present in versions before 4.0 and it was removed in version 4.0.1 - never to return.

EDIT: From seven years ago…

I appreciate your reply, but I do not think that Hackintosh or Windows is related to the issue of being unable to restore an iPod on PowerPC at all. I could have omitted that information, but I chose to include it for completeness' sake because I was able to successfully restore the iPod in the end, albeit on a different machine.

As for the software update, that does still work so if you received an error, that might have been a network issue. You didn't say what software you used on the Hackintosh to restore the iPod and how that's different from the PowerPC software.
I'm glad to hear that Apple did not block 10.6.3 from accessing the iPod software update server; however, that does not change the fact that I cannot connect to said server. My computer's network connection is properly set up, and requests to Apple's domains, like s.mzstatic.com and ax.itunes.apple.com, are going out successfully when pressing buttons in iTunes.

As for the software I used to restore my iPod, it was iTunes 11.4.

P.S. I have attached a screenshot of iTunes 10.6.3 after pressing the "Restore" button for context.
