Frankly, it makes more sense at this point to take the word of the developer, who took the effort to EXPLICITLY state, as in fair warning, that any re-download or update, prompted or otherwise, will results in the customer being charged the delta between the discounted price and full price.

A very nice point.

I'd probably jump on this, but my ipod needs OpenVPN support first otherwise I can't even get into my home network..

That can't be right. That's not how the App Store works. No matter what happens to the price later on, all updates and redownloads should be free.

arn

Unfortunately it is not working as promised and advertised for all apps. Several developers have screwed users with this already. See: NetNewsWire and Break Classic. Both apps were once free, are now paid, and cannot be updated unless you paid for it.

Other apps that were once free and now paid have not had this issue. But it's clearly not an "issue" it's the developer intentionally modifying the app to screw users who were nice enough to try it when free.

ViPa- have you tried Mocha VNC Lite (free) before buying this? - is it any better ? THX!

I have. VNC lite is ok, but it's missing some key buttons since it is the lite version. I noticed it's much slower than jaadu.

Jaadu is much better imho. of course, it is a full vs lite version comparison so you have to take that into account.

for $5, you'd be amiss to not buy it. what a great buy.

Arn is extrapolating what he knows about how the App Store works, but the developer is clearly instructing you that you will be charged that price delta if you download the same or later versions of the app in future.

I don't want to mislead anyone... and there may be some devs around that can clarify. But my understanding is what is described (selectively charging for an update) is simply is not possible.

Disclaimer: I am not a registered developer, so I don't have access to all the information. if a dev can clarify, that would be helpful.

See: NetNewsWire and Break Classic. Both apps were once free, are now paid, and cannot be updated unless you paid for it.

NetNewsWire is still free from what I see. As for Break Classic. That is interesting. Certainly it's possible if the dev removes the previous app and reintroduces it as a complete new paid version with the same name. but I'm not sure if that's what happened.

edit: some people who responded below say that Break Classic updates are free

For me the price was the big thing. Wasn't going to get it until I really wanted to use it, and then glmmp, hard swallow, $25. Not to mention the original write up said that setup was more difficult but they would be providing a more streamlined automated process for the desktop side. Not sure if that has happened yet. But this is just fantastic.

I was actually going to buy this after I learned of the sale yesterday. In the last hour I've learned more than I think I should have about this application and what it does and doesn't do. It was all supported by a couple of reviews (which I am truly grateful for). In the end, Jaadu VNC needs some sort of security encryption before I'll use it. Others are free to do so as they wish, but for me, I won't risk it. I think $25.00 for the app is great if there is some sort of encryption built in. For $5.00 you're paying for what you get … a major security risk. I hope if there is an update it includes the necessary security. I'll happily wait this one out until that is the case.

I bought Break Classic and NetNewsWire for free; when they started charging I was still able to update, for free.

I grabbed this program earlier today for $5. This is what the price should've been in the first place.

Has anyone been able to get this application to work with AT&T DSL with a 2wire modem/router? It seems to be really difficult to configure.

Never mind...I got it working! This is amazing!

Your flat out wrong buddy. I downloaded break classic when i first got my iPhone it was free. A couple days ago there was an update and decided to give it another try. They are now charging, but I was not charged again, I was able to download the update free.

Also, net news wire is still free.

I know there is a lot of misinformation on these boards, but there is no need to just make things up as you go, seriously...

Also, just to make this a somewhat on topic post, I downloaded Jaadu, and I for one am not overly impressed. I use winadmin, and I know it's a different protocol, but that's about how fast I expected the program to run. Not only is it not usable for me over 3G (because it's SO slow), but even WIFI is sluggish. Also, I have a desktop with 2 monitors and the screen won't even load. Winadmin works fine under both conditions. Again, it could be a protocol issue and not a program issue but either way, for me, it's a wasted $5.

Ended up purchasing this app for $5

Personally I will only connect to my mac when home on my local network. Will also occasionally connect to my parents mac when I need to do something for them remote.

With that said it's worth it for me for the $5. For $25 no.

I will like to see how they can charge the $20 to update. I still don't see how that is possible. I've downloaded several apps that were once free and now paid and I never had an issue of getting charged.

See my long post above, but Mocha is hardly "borderline unuseable" over a local network.

Agreed. And I use Mocha Lite over 3G pretty frequently and it works GREAT. As with ANY VNC connection, usability mostly depends on the upload bitrate of the internet connection your home PC's on, since that's normally the smallest pipe.

And, even better, Mocha doesn't need any additional software on the Mac - just the OSX built-in screen sharing app.

Anyone actually got this running under Vista .. watched their video a few times and its not very good.
And if you've saved a server and obviously screwed up somewhere, how do you delete it !?

Bait - And - Switch

"Note: The developer claims all future updates or redownloads will require payment of the difference between sale and regular price (though there is some ongoing debate in the discussion thread about how this will be accomplished)."

If that's the case then it's not really a sale at all then.
If the note is true, then this is a BAIT and SWITCH.
A SALE would imply that it's the EXACT same software with all the same rights and privileges as normal, just at a discounted price.
Forcing only the sale versions to pay for updates and fixes would basically make it be a restricted version of the full-rights (more expensive) version.

This is just greed. Plain and simple.
The dude knows he can't get the massive number of users with the overblown price when there is a FREE version of a VNC client available, and so he just wants to underhandedly 'trick' people into buying the software then turn-around and strong-handedly force people into paying more if they want any fixes or updates.

Updates? Sure, I can see paying for them if they add new functionality.
But FIXES? If your software is broken when you sold it, you should be fixing it with patches for FREE.
Don't waste your time or money on this unless he renames this version to "Jaadu LIMITED"
(Hell, he could still be somewhat accurate by naming it "Jaadu - Limited Edition")

Like many others there was no way I was paying $25, but for $5 bucks it's a go. Just bought it...

I don't think that would be possible seeing how he used the same app to do it in the app store, I don't think he would have anyway to distinguish who paid what. I believe developers can elect to charge for upgrades but I am pretty sure they can't distinguigh between owners of the same application.

They missed the west coast crowd (LA, San Fransisco...two HUGE markets for the iPHone) with the 12pm Easter deadline. Still shows $4.99, ready to buy...but not working as the deadline has passed. No thanks for more than $5.

In the developers email to the people he was targeting it said it was only for 12 hours. I agree he should of said that in the info page on it. Glad I got it.
