That's awesome, I really want one of these since I get about 1 bar of service in my house.

I'm on the phone with customer care. The rep knew what I was talking about and said they were conducting trials in Atlanta, Raleigh, and Charlotte (where I live). She consulted with tech support and they want to give me one to test out since I have discussed my service issues with engineers and techs several times.

I'm on hold right now while the rep finds out where to transfer me to in order to set me up. I don't know if it will go through, but I am optimistic. :) I'll report back.

EDIT: I spoke to the Product Management Center (I think that's what it's called) and they said that they were not looking for any more trial participants at this time. They also said that the Microcell will be available later this year. When it does come out, hopefully I'll be able to raise hell enough that they give it to me for free...:)

You all are going to love this. I got a call back from a very nice rep that did some research for me. This is what she said...

Single line w/ microcell = $15 a month unlimited
Shared (family) microcell = $30 a month unlimited

This is on TOP of paying for the device outright as well. Sadly, I believe this is true. If it were just $15 a month unlimited for all devices, that would be good. However $30 is way too much. Talk about an ass rape. You get to pay for your high speed Internet. Then you get to pay AT&T for their service that is lackluster. On top of that, you now get to pay even more for what? A service you are already paying for twice?

I don't think so. As happy and excited I was for this, it's not so exciting anymore. It's crap. Your basically giving them free money every month and they get to use your Internet line while doing it.

When I found this thread I was very excited about this item, which I had no idea something like this existed. But now reading the last post about the pricing, that is VERY disappointing. I've lived in my apartment with my wife for nearly 2 years and we had to get a home phone due to necessity because our cell service is horrible in our complex. It'd be nice if they added a new cell tower to the area but since I know that ain't going to happen, something like this would be a great substitute.

I was even going to see about getting a hold of AT&T to test one...but if it's really going to be 15/30 a month...no thanks.

We shouldn't have to pay to help out our service. Hell if anything, they should offer these for free to people who have really poor reception at home or whatever.

Nationwide coverage My butt.

They should just let you use the minutes that you already have and not charge you anything extra (except perhaps for the cost of the unit). I have ZERO coverage inside my house, so I'll be all over this thing when it comes out.

Please keep us updated on how it goes once they get you activated!

Why can't it just be a one time fee?

Yeah, a ONE TIME fee would be great. Then MAYBE at most $5 extra a month. However, it will never happen. I just don't get how any sane person can justify what they are doing.

It's exactly like what companies are doing now for online payments. In order to pay something online (mortgage, credit card, loan, whatever), they charge you a fee. So, you have to pay them, to pay them. What kind of BS is that? Yeah ok. I will mail it or do online bill pay and you can get it late.

AT&T is really not doing good if they are going to charge that much for the micro cell.

I know these use different technologies, but why not just pay a one time price and buy something like this? http://www.wi-ex.com/

Yeah, the problem with these units is, you have to have a pretty good signal outside the house in order to amplify it inside the house. If you have 1 bar or worse outside, these do nothing.

Oh yes we have to pay to...pay. What the hell?

With 2 iPhones in our home already, my wife's and mine, we are already paying $30 x 2 just for data plans. AT&T is getting quite enough of our money. As I write this I was just thinking our cell phones are damn near $200 a month, which isn't too much less than our Cable bill. But at least that is Home phone/internet/cable TV.

Sheeeesh!

Great. We pay for something monthly for a machine to increase the signal reception that is originally AT&T's fault.

Wow.

The 300+ I pay a month for my family plan isn't enough.

Now I have to pay 30 a month to boost the signal in my house where our phones don't work because of their crap network?

Lord.

What a crock of $%^&.

Not a crock, that's too nice. More like an oil rig size.

You said your MicroCell is plugged directly into your modem?? If so Turn Off your MicroCell, UnPlug your Airport from your MicroCell, then un plug your modem. Wait about 1 minute. Then plug in your modem, wait until the online light is solid, then plug in your MicroCell, then your AirPort, and see if you can activate then. Hope this helps.. :)

You can contact me personally at mbsaeger@me.com

So I guess this is AT&Ts way of increasing our phones reception. On our dime no less. What a scam.

While I get 5 bars of edge at my house (nearest 3g is about ~100 miles away), I can't see paying them to use my bandwidth.

You pay the cable company to rent their bandwidth, ergo AT&T should pay you to rent your bandwidth. Instead, they want to charge for the device and the service?

But can the service be free? From a standpoint of cost, I understand that there are expenses assocaited with the infrastructure to support VoIP; is that offset by the decreased demand on their cell towers? From a standpoint of revenue, it just might be disasterous. Subscribers who make most of their calls from home may switch to the smallest voice plan available.

This service really should be free for consumers. Look at it this way - it's basically a VoIP gateway. Vonage charges $25 per month for the service and it's practically all they offer! AT&T makes revenue from their wireless services for which the demand on their network would only decrease. Hey, one day we might actually see speeds of 3 Mbps on their 3.6 Mbps network!

i get about 2 bars of edge in my area, which is sufficient for calls, and i have wifi at my house for data, aside from that i spend most of my time in a 3g area. I was considering this but after i saw the 15 a month they can stick it up their @ss. Does anyone know if the other similar products offered by sprint etc charge a monthly fee as well?

Hi :) sorry to be rude but what the heck is this?
I have been reading about it for a month now and still don't get what it is. The stuff on google make me naucious... Is this like a mini cell tower in your house so if you don't have coverage in your house, it adds coverage there or something? Err someone explain it noob friendly please. :) <3

Exactly as you said, this thing plugs into your internet, and like a mini cell tower, gives you coverage in your house :D

So is it up and working yet? Do you know if it really does block unregistered phones? I'd love to have it at the office. I I could boost signaling the metal building that blocks our regular signal it would be great. If I could then block my workers cell reception that would be a needed bonus! This way I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of innitiating a cellular ban in the workplace.

Productivity +1, waisting time on my dime -1.

This would be so nice. . .

You LUCKY SOB! That's so awesome. I'm really waiting for this to come out. I get good service at home but I get awful service at work, zero signal. Basements are not conducive to cellular signal.

O2 seems not to have immediate plans... let me tell them... their service is ***** in my area... I don't even get EDGE :/ I NEED at least EDGE... this slowness is killing me, and my iPhone's battery!

I Have GPRS Pretty much everywhere in my house, and town, dont really care, fast enough for simple web pages etc.
