I wasn't. How Apple get away with selling such old tech at today's prices has never ceased to amaze me. There's an old saying 'there's one born every minute'.

Yeah after some serious thought these past days, I think no matter what Apple announces this year, Ill switch to PC for my main working machine. I know for a fact that even if they bring AMD polaris into the iMac, I will not get the hardware I want no matter - because Apple has decided to leave the Pro market and make nice decorative machines with less power. The 3 year old Mac Pro and 5 year Thunderbolt display kind of proves that Apple is getting out of the Pro market all together and will focus on small mobile devices. Even the Macbook Pro has stagnated completely.
What Im wondering though is if all of this will affect their phone and pad sales. One of the reason why I stick to apple is the ecosystem, and because Ive been working on iMacs for the last couple of years. Now that Im being forced to switch to PC it breaks my ecosystem, and then I wont be as singleminded next time I buy a phone or Pad or whatever. I would not be surprised if this will create a ripple effect over time. Particularly now that is seems the next iPhone will be as innovative as a piece of bread - the coolness factor will then fade.

the cool thing was that it basically didn't lose any osx functionality. imessage, icloud, handoff, etc they all worked as native.

I think that works in Apple's favour rather than the customers in that it allows them to get away with selling antiques for top dollar.

That's exactly what I have done i.e. I now have an Android phone and Tablet. I can honestly say I haven't missed either my iPhone or iPad. I love the freedom that Android allows me. Whilst still owning my iMac I also have Windows 10 and that too I find to be very good indeed.

The only brand loyalty I have now is to 'brand Lankyman' i.e. myself. :)

Hi guys - a long-time lurker in this forum.

I've been holding off with buying a new iMac for two years but I expect that will change later in the year. Currently I'm running a modest 27 inch 3.1 GHz i5 from 2011 and it have served me well. Last summer the graphics card broke down, but Apple fixed it without any cost for me.

My main reasons why not to buy the newer retina iMacs have been my dreadful experience with the iPad 3 - beautiful display but not powerful processor that can drive the damn thing. I've been a bit cautious and let the graphics chips catch up.

While the graphics cards in the newer iMacs seem to be powerful enough to drive a 27 inch retina without too much problems - the prospect of of getting an iMac with Thunderbolt 3 is extremely attractive. I work as a sound designer - and I wouldn't be too surprised if Thunderbolt 3 will spawn a new generation of high-end sound cards with possibilities of near-zero latencies.

What technologies would you think would be the most probable a late 2016 iMac would contain?

/C
You might see see hardware updates this year. Maybe if you are lucky it would be next year. This year we got iPad maybe again and iPhones. Maybe reintroduction of macOS and iOS 10

If you want Kaby Lake processor then you'll have to wait December at least :D

I'm in the same boat. I have a late 2009 27" iMac that was top of the line at the time (I actually bought it new in early 2010). But, gradually, it's starting to show its limitations. Connectivity is in the dark ages: FireWire800 and USB 2.0. It has a spinning hard drive (which I had to have replaced under AppleCare 4 times), no SSD. The screen has burn-in areas. It feels like the graphics card is starting to crap out, maybe the hdd also, (again! seriously, Seagate makes the works cr@p). It's sloooow, with spinning beachball most of the time, slow, slow, slow app launching. All kinds of wonky behavior. The time is getting near when I'll need a new iMac. I can wait for whatever comes out this fall, but I'm not sure I'll manage to stretch it to next year. But I'd like to have at least USB C, so I'm not left behind on connectivity again.

I realize you may have saved yourself money by just getting new HDs under AppleCare, but you'd have saved yourself a lot of headaches and enjoyed much better every-day performance by installing an SSD in its place. Kiss those beach balls goodbye! I have a 2010 iMac, so it's the same design as yours, and that particular iMac design is the best one to upgrade with SSD, given the processors that were available for them (basically the Core-i chips except for the lower spec late 2009 machines that still used C2D's). If you don't need the retina screen, your machine still has plenty of life left in it.

Any chance we can do some DIY eGPU over thunderbolt 3 for the 2016 iMac? Or that apple in some way makes our lives better with supporting eGPU's in some form.

I was really rooting for a 4k iMac with a good GPU.

Looking at the results from barefeats benchmarks on the razor core, even if Apple allows an eGPU to work with the internal screen, expect a significant performance penalty (-50%+). And this is before considering that there are bandwidth issues with 5K and thunderbolt 3.

I think the best that we can hope for at this point is decent eGPU support with external monitors, and better internal GPUs due to the process shrink

Sigh. I want to upgrade from a 15" rMBP for a 27" iMac now, but hate to pay full price for something that is pending a refresh in the next ~3 months.

I am in the same boat and have decided to wait it out. I am not sure how many times I have put a fully loaded IMac in the bag on the store only to stop at the last minute pressing buy :)
Fortunately I am not desperate but look forward to Polaris and Thunderbolt 3 and all the benefits. I feel the new one will be more forward looking.

The struggle is real. I was at Best Buy earlier playing with it :(

Is that opposed to the present old hardware high priced backward looking models?

I would prefer usb C and thunderbolt 3 as more future proof ports plus a graphics card that runs on less power meaning less heat . Present iMac is good which is why it is tempting but I am looking to do a desktop and notebook upgrade at the same time so it makes sense to have all the same ports etc. and ports that will support external devices for the near future.

I have decided to replace my MacMini with an iMac as I really would like a Retina display on my desktop after having got used to one on my MacBook. I have decided to wait until the new model comes out later this year as I am hoping it gets upgraded with better graphics and Thunderbolt 3.

I just noticed yesterday that Apple have a lot of very end iMacs (4GHz/i7/SSD) on their refurb store. Do you think they are clearing out stocks of unsold machines? Hopefully new iMacs soon!!

No. They're most likely just clearing stock of high end refurb machines. A lot of people who buy these, especially in 2014 when they first came out, buy top spec machines because the base model is so expensive (or at least used to be) that you might as well go all out if you're already spending that much

A lot of them are current models, but with the 4GHz i7 option. Strange they all appeared at once. I wonder if they are refurbished or they are clearing high end models that didn't sell?

Again, my guess is it's just a fairly common BTO. The current iMac is specced and priced so that the 4Ghz i7 option is actually a pretty damn good upgrade even for those who don't need hyperthreading (vs the 3.3Ghz i5 option which sits below it)

On everymac site I've checked for the last handful of years, and there's been a release every fall season. Hasn't skipped a year yet. Of course, now that I might buy one this fall myself - you will see: They will skip a year :( *fingers crossed and knock on wood etc they do not, and actually release something new*.

I can NOT wait to buy my upgrade. My current iMac is from early 2009, and I am ready to upgrade. Big time.

I think worse case is Apple will announce a refreshed iMac 4K/5K in the Fall, but not ship until early 2017 (kind of what happened with the first 5K) due to wanting to include Kaby Lake CPUs, which will not start shipping until mid-December (for the desktop model).

If it is just USB-C and TB3 (and Polaris GPUs if ready and in volume production), then we should see the update and ship date in Fall.

How much better are the Kaby lake CPU's compared to the current ones? I don't see my self waiting until early '17 to purchase a new Mac and I wanted to know if it's worth waiting so long for the new CPUs or get the current line.

That's sort of what I am thinking. I am hoping though that I get to pat the 5k before 2017. We shall see. I just really don't want to buy the current 1st gen model now, when it's sorta end of it's cycle. And then have a new one appear in a few months. I can wait a tad longer.

It could be that Apple had a bunch of iMacs with bad logic boards. They may have been refurbed with brand new logic boards pulled from regular production. At this point, Apple may have a surplus of 4GHz boards and/or Intel may be having increased yield on these faster processors.

Me too - I don't care too much about the cpu upgrade, just USB C / Thunderbolt 3 and Polaris. Hopefully they won't delay to release this and have an event for a full mac release for the mac pro, iMac and rMBP in September / October. My bank balance will be severely hit on that day :)
