The OP's argument makes little sense. Most new hardware runs software that evolves slowly overtime. Hardware purchases in computing are generally made based on improvements in design, usability and power not on incremental software evolution. iOS has never claimed to be Mac OS, however, over time the quality of apps and the usability of the OS have made the platform much more capable in terms of productivity vis a vis content consumption. Regardless, Apple obviously wants to prioritize touch usage vis a vis general computing on iOS. If one looks at the Surface Tablets they are just regular PC's in a tablet format that have terrible usability without a keyboard and mouse input.

Correct. It's a hardware update, not an OS update. From what is actually being updated, it's a huge change. The OP's argument is irrelevant.

Agree with OP that yes the new iPad is limited by iOS so no real update there. However, for some buyers this is a huge update. I'm coming from an iPad Mini 4. From an update from last years 2017 Pro, I think the update is a medium size change.

I have a feeling iOS 13 will bring some much needed changes for iPad Pro.

In the meantime, I’m loving the new 12.9”. Smaller, lighter, easier to hold - which is a massive deal for us cripples :D

Everything about it is just, better.
I can’t believe they made it smaller and thinner, but still made it sound louder and better. Amazing!

And that’s just gravy compared to the other improvements.

I am relatively sure that the new 12.9 will be thicker and heavier than before if you add the much needed folio case to the device. This folio case is double sided which means double thickness and weight. And it won't be easier to hold with the small bezels....

I have the folio and I’ll also be getting the Smart Keyboard. But I only use them when needed. Which is mainly when travelling for protection.

When I’m just using the iPad for day to day things, or with the Pencil. I don’t use any.

And the argument is moot anyway if like me you also had the Smart Keyboard for the old iPad Pro. The new one is still thinner.

As for holding it, no issues so far, the bezel is large enough to accommodate my less than dainty thumb.

Are you able to tell us the weight of the new Smart Folio? Mine for the gen 2 12.9 is 155 grams. If the new one is around 300 grams it compensates the weight advantage of about 60 grams....

The new Smart Folio on its own is 238g.
I wouldn’t care if it was more, I’m sure it’s an issue for some, but like I say for me it’s only protection while travelling.

The new iPad Pro (12.9) is a huge improvement for holding. Not only the weight difference, which for me moving from a gen 1, is almost 100g

But because of the reduction in size, the centre of gravity is a bit different. Trust me, I’ve got severe nerve damage, I notice the smallest of changes and the new Pro in that regard is a huge change.

Thanks for the informations. I can only assume anything I say because I have no real comparison. At the moment I am fine with my gen 2. Don’t think that the size made such a big difference with this already big iPad. The larger bezels seems useful to me holding the device. Maybe I have to check this out in real life...

I don't know what's with all the snarky negative, "good then don't buy one" comments. People need to grow up and realize that criticism is neither negative, nor a personal attack on you for having a different opinon, or because you purchased one.

He's right. Apple, with this iPad, is trying to say that this a real computer now. And with the limitations on USB-C (the display out feature is terrible) and the OS, it's just not. The power is there for it to be a real computer, and is the price is on par with a real computer. The capabilities don't reflect that.

I guess it depends. I mean, I coped with my 1st gen 12.9, but not always without issue. So much so that I actually bought a 10.5 last year. Which while much better in the size and weight department, was lacking in the screen size - I just couldn’t get used to it. So the wife’s got that now, which is good, it stops her stealing mine for drawing :D

This years 12.9 though really is a huge difference. I totally understand that not everyone has severe nerve damage, which trust me, even with morphine and lots of other nasty sweeties, is a right royal pain in the ass.

I instantly noticed the difference in weight and how much easier it is to hold balance wise.
The bezels I really don’t have issue with. To be honest I was a little worried before it arrived, they did look a bit on the small side. But in person they really aren’t as small as you’d think. Maybe it depends how you hold it as well of course.

I’ve got hands like pit shovels, my pinkie is bigger than any of my wife’s fingers :D but I only ever have my thumb on the front of the screen normally. On occasion, when my arm is acting up usually, I’ll hold the iPad much as you would a clipboard, so it’s resting on my forearm and only the tips of my fingers are on the other side. That way also seems to be fine with the new iPad.

And of course when all else fails, there’s Apples rather excellent palm (and didgit) rejection, which works incredibly well.

Oh yea, definitely. This machine was built for iOS 13 (everything for 12 was pushed to 13). I am looking forward to the OS changes as well. Yea the 12.9 is definitely appealing, but I went with the 11 inch because I feel like it's just more comfortable to handle. Both are great though, I could definitely see myself having both one day.

I’m sure the 11” is a great machine as well, it’s good they kept the same form factor, but increased the screen size.

I tried the 10.5” last year, but having had the 12.9 I just couldn’t get used to the smaller screen, so the wife got that and I went back to my 12.9.

The difference in size and weight this year though really is great. It’s one of my favourite things about it.

The OP is right, there is a huge gap between the iPad hardware and software. Its like putting me in an F1 car.

I would love one of these iPad as they are lovely tablets but I'm going to wait until iOS13 to see if they close the gap in hardware and software.

Literally no real differences besides usual spec bump, USB-C input is severely limited and with a simple lighting to USB-C dongle you can do the same thing with last years iPad Pro

But the main point is that iOS is still iOS. Extremely limited and cumbersome compared to macOS so it’s not laptop replacement by a long shot, but great at media consumption. It doesn’t matter if you have the power of a Mac Pro in an iPad if it can’t do anything

Hopefully iOS 13 actually makes the iPad a machine pro’s could realistically entertain using
What exactly did you expect, a built in warp engine so you could fly to the end of the universe with it?

I just received my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 and I can assure you that this is the iPad evolution at its best.

I dunno, that SOC is pretty close to a warp engine :p

Just remember everyone…
Don’t buy something that doesn’t do what you want right now.

People talking about iOS 13 should be reminded that that will be talked about in June and released nearly a year from now next September… A time when we conceivably could see another iPad spec bump or alteration or other small or large changes. We may see some sort of point update to iOS 12 that would help things with the iPad but Apple has been slow and late with so many things that I won’t count on that.

Tech always should serve you great right when you buy.

That's a very good point and one that should be made.

However I think that certainly a few of us who are talking about it are aware of the current capabilities, and are/have purchased based on them.

But there's no harm in looking towards the future a little. It stands to reason that there's going to be big changes next year with iOS. especially if the rumoured complete overhaul of the interface bears fruit.

Yeah I'm mainly throwing some caution to casual observers who see "iOS 13 will probably bring big changes that will help a lot!" (paraphrasing) and thinking that will be the savior on things that may be big shortcomings for them right now.

With tech - one should almost never buy something that doesn't fulfill all their desires and needs at the time of purchase.

By the time iOS might finally come around for a lot of people, we could be 1 or 2 more iPad hardware revisions down the line - and that's when the new hardware should be bought, unless you have a reason to want new hardware sooner of course.

That's where I'm at on my 9.7" iPP. There's literally nothing of substance a new iPad buyer can do (because of iOS) that's worth anywhere close to the money I'd have to fork over to upgrade.

They are selling shinier and much more expensive shovels...
..but even the brand new shovels can still only dig the same type of mostly shallow holes.
