still happy with my six year old one, but would be sad if there will be no update.

Bollocks. They said no such thing. Why do people peddle this trash.

They said something Pro users would really like. No mention of an actual computer.

Where does Tim say there will be a MacPro in 2013? All he said was that he regrets not having tim to talk about the MacPro. No proof that there will be a new one.

Here is what Tim posted -

Franz,

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn't have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today's event, don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

We've been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features.

We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.

There are working on something - note something, not MacPro - for later next year.

.

Tim is a very intelligent person with a solid grasp of the English language. Using that as a premise, a paragraph represents a single thought/theme.
Definition of a paragraph:
A distinct section of a piece of writing, usually dealing with a single theme and indicated by a new line, indentation, or numbering.

Therefore, if the paragraph is about the Mac Pro which was specifically mentioned in the preceding sentence of the paragraph then one can assume that the "really great thing" is either a new Mac Pro or some kind of professional/prosumer replacement for said Mac Pro. True?

Yes it may not be a Mac Pro, but it is some kind of replacement. It is about time Apple does something revolutionary with the Mac Pro don't you think? I mean the current chasis is virtually the same one they have used since the G5 Power Mac days (with a view tweaks).

Normally you would be correct. But this is Apple. Remember all the things Job's said they would never do. A phone, a tablet etc? What happened? Within 12 months of each they were entering both markets.

I would love them to do something, but they make very little of their profit from the MacPro. Granted per unit it probably makes them far more money than people realise, but as a percentage of overall profit, the numbers are miniscule.

Yes the basic case is the same externally as that of the last generation PowerPC's, but why change something that works well.

"We also updated the current model today," implies that what they're working on is a new model of whatever was being discussed in the paragraph.. which was the Mac Pro.

Simply, demarcation drives sales. Not so much with machine that sits under a desk, but visible changes increase sales. Don't they?

e.g A lot of less privileged people will be happy the iPhone 5 doesn't look that much different from the iPhone 4, because they will feel less social pressure to upgrade. Design demarcation creates a feeling of something new and fresh that you want.

Purely assuming here, but I am sure that the rate of uptake from the plastic looking desktop pro machines to the Power PC was much faster then the uptake from Power PC to Mac Pro, mostly because of design.

I'm not arguing for the design of a new Mac Pro, but it makes sense they will do something different because of the social pressure we all put on each other to have the latest coolest looking stuff. e.g they put that nice new edge on the iPhone5 and they really talk it up in that sales pitch about how nice it is. As a 5 owner now, you're supposed to get that same attachment and sell your friends who are still on 4's why they need to have this diamond tipped precision cut phone like they do.

Unfortunately it is this sick part of human nature to want to show others how we are better. Look at me, my **** is better then yours, i.e. I'm fresher and greater.

You mean the update, that they then backed down on because it was so pathetic? Apple giving info on something that is almost 18 months away? Get real, Nobody knows what could happen in 18 months. Intel could find a serious flaw in production that pushes things back, nVidia could have a colossal f up.

If anyone seriously took any notice of what Cook said, then your are deluding yourself. There are so many things out of Apple's control, that is why everything is so vague and none specific.

Robert, for the normal consumer Apple products I agree, but if your buying the MacPro on the case, then you don't actually need it.

I doubt many will be dropping near $3,000 on the new MacPro because the cheese grater can now do a finer grate. I would imagine and hope it's because it is time to update their older machines.

I can't remember the exact words of Steve Jobs regarding the up and coming Final Cut Pro but it was something similar to 'we have something special for you' - when someone pushed him on it. Says it all for me.

I would be utterly gobsmacked if they brought out anything that was focused towards the niche real power user market - there just isn't enough cash in it for them and clearly goes against their current positioning and focus!!

Apple have to be careful though. They are making a lot of money now out of fashionable consumer products for consumers that love the shiny new fashions but these people are the quickest (by definition) to switch when something else catches there attention. It will happen, the question is when? But when it does Apple will no longer be respected by longstanding professional users in the way it was.

But, to make a new, and substantially improved mac pro, they don't need anything new from Intel or nVidia. They just need to use what is already currently available. There is no need to wait for E5-Ivy Bridge. Sandy would do just fine. Also, I think "update" is exactly the right word for what they did with the Mac Pro. It was a moderate spec bump, much like they did with the MBP last fall. What else are you supposed to say it was?

For the most part I agree to, but some slight changes to the case would actually give it some nice selling points for pro users too. Ie. making it possible to fit them in standard racks.

Again, for the most part you're probably right. Most sales will come from people that need the machine to do work and don't care so much about what it looks like, especially for the DP models. But the lower end SP models do compete with standard desktop PCs in some people's minds. So, making it attractive for the casual user, that doesn't like all-in-ones, to buy the bottom end Mac Pro really can't be a bad thing, so long as it doesn't effect the functionality for those that really need the horse power. And refreshing a design that is almost a decade old would certain help that.

Rev up excitement for the 2013 MacPro?
Uh..no.
Apple has made it clear that it doesn't care about the professional desktop user.
We're not Tiffany texting in the mall on our shiny iToy so we don't really register on their radar.

A less power hungry machine.

A quieter machine.

A cooler machine (less hot)

Obviously faster.
Faster but less power means cpu-wise just newer gen, which will happen anyway.
If quietness would be important to Apple, they could use 20cm fans in front and back. I guess they just don't think this is important.
Also they could enhance the cooling of pcie slot area so, that gpu cards wouldn't need noisy small fans at all...

I get the feeling that Apple still hasn't quite decided what to do about anything desktop yet one way or the other.

I believe there is some soul left to them. Capitalism could not drive it from them fully. I know there is still good in them.

:D

Capitalism makes companies like Apple possible. With communism we all would still be using DOS now. ;)

Apple creates something and expects money in return, which is used for payment of employees and production, and to research something even better.

Now if they decide not to produce something for the "power user" anymore there is no reason to be mad at them. There are enough alternatives out there. Apple doesn't owe us anything, but we don't owe Apple anything either.

I've started to feel like I'm giving up on the idea of a new Mac Pro.

At this point I have a feeling that if new iMacs come out with USB 3.0 and multiple thunderbolt/displayports I'll probably finally upgrade. Even though I absolutely love the Mac Pro and its form factor, and would gladly drop $3K on a new one, Apple just hasn't been showing much interest in the platform and I don't want to be orphaned a year after I buy it.

I look at the bright side: At least I won't be running Windows 8. :)

Speaking of, so what is taking those imacs so long?

Rumor has it Apple is having problems with the display of the 27 inch iMac.
But they are still guessing an October launch.

Only a year until the launch of the "something really great" Mac Pro.

What do people genuinely/realistically expect Apple to come out with next year as the new Mac Pro (or replacement)?

There's been wild ideas such as modular systems or something more akin to the xMac. A lot of these ideas are cool but unlikely, right?

I imagine we'll get a new tower design that is slightly smaller and makes more efficient use of the space. Only 1 optical drive, and perhaps drive 1 LESS PCI slot given we'll have thunderbolt (at least that's how Apple will sell it). I imagine it will be iterative on the specs. Whatever the current XEONs are at the time, possibly Ivy Bridge? Possibly a price drop given the smaller case ($100 or so). GPU's will likely be nVidia Keplers. So nothing ground breaking, just iterative across the board. As much as I would LOVE something groundbreaking, I just don't see it happening in the pro space.

I'd prefer a smaller tower that is designed for 5 x 2.5" drives/SSDs, but I just don't see Apple abandoning magnetic media just yet for the pros, given SSDs' still can't compete in price per TB/GB.

Excellent point - sales of the mp are low due to the spec and in part, it's old looking - perhaps jony will jazz it up with flashing neon sparkles etc which may inject some interest in the ye olde desktop
