i'd be fine with a uniformly yellow screen. but mine has white on top and yellow on bottom. horrible.

+1

My screen is bearable on top, but the bottom has a nasty yellow/dirty look to it.

Also, the top left part of my screen is slightly red making my Safari bar go from purple-ish to blue-ish to yellow-ish.

It's terrible. Should I get a replacement?

I have 10 3GS and all have the same type of screen.

All 10 units I have here at work from diff batches have the slightly yellow tint that is more pronounced towards the bottom. Had I not read the forums or compared to an older 3G i prob would not have noticed. Doesn't bother me that much and I have OCD.

You don't read mail and use safari then or tilt the phone? Moving the spots all over. If you have OCD as you state then you better belive it that you notice it.

Wow, I noticed the same thing with my new 3gs almost instantly. The screen was not as nice looking as the 3G. Apparently i'm not the only one. It just looks horribly washed out, almost exactly like the image in the article I linked to.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/167067/iphone_3g_s_screen_has_warmer_colors_sharper_text.html

I am hoping this gets adjusted.

Also, wanted to +1 to the auto brightness issue. I can barely see the 3gs if i have auto brightness on at night.

Here's hoping 3.1 addresses these issues. At least I have a year to get it replaced if not =).

[16 gb black 3gs]

I just used my 3G for the first time in a week and a half and was amazed at how yellow the screen was. It was instantly noticable in the taskbar. I'm amazed I never noticed.

So I guess you could say my 3GS is fine.

I just wish to add my experience with the 3GS having bought one last week. Essentially after getting it home and turning it on I noticed the yellow-tone that many people seem to be noticing. I refer to this as "nicotine yellow" .. and its not pleasant to the eyes. Having used the phone for a day or so I then had the chance to directly compare it to a family member who also had purchased the 3GS but in white. In direct comparison you could see that my phone was a much more 'dirty yellow' than his 'warm white' tone that was more than acceptable. Putting a 1st Gen Iphone, 1st Gen iPod Touch, 3GS 16GB Black, 3GS 16GB White down all together with various LCD screen display image tests (colours, patterns, tones, etc.) it was easily visible that mine was the worst of ALL the devices. His 3GS was comparable to my excellent quality 1st Generation Ipod Touch that had a perfect screen display with the correct level of warmth. I also found my screen to be 'blotchy' of sorts.. with deeper tones of yellow here and there. It was also interesting to see that RED colours displayed "pinker" on this phone than that of the 3GS that was acceptable, where they displayed as a vivid "red" .. also other colours displayed differently also; blue being noticeably different. Likewise 0-255 grey-scale boxes showed that my phone could not display the full range quite as well as the acceptable 3GS.

I really would recommend anyone who is within their time limit to seek a replacement as soon as possible and not accept a phone that is not uniform with other screens out there. I personally sought a full refund for my purchase and will be waiting a while before purchasing again as this has more than dented my "Apple Experience" to say the least.

I think e3lysium above has summarized my experience exactly. I had a 3G with an excellent display and decided to upgrade to the 3Gs. I love the iPhone platform and the new features of the 3Gs, but the "nicotine yellow"(thanks e3lysium for the term) was just to nasty to handle. Colors were off and text was fuzzy at times due to the color. I made one exchange and it had the same yellow color. The display units did not exhibit this issue and the genius acknowledged it, but said it was in spec. I hope that Apple does at least try to correct this in future production runs of the 3Gs, even if it is quietly done, because I would like to get the 3Gs again. But, the screen is too important to me.

On another note, I was disappointed with my return experience at Apple. They wouldn't credit my credit card because I had completed one exchange and the current receipt didn't have a price on it. So, they would only give me a gift car for the full amount. They said I could talk to a manager to get cash back. I will wait a bit and see if they screen issue gets smoothed out then maybe use it to by a new 3Gs.

My 3GS is noticeably darker than my 3G but its definately not as bad or "yellow" as some of the other 3GS's I've seen on this forum. I've got a week 21 3GS and it's flawless besides the darker screen. If it gets fixed then great!! However I'm fine without it.

Just adding that I took a chance on buying a second 3GS earlier today having returned my nicotine-yellow phone a few days ago.

The new phone is sadly from the same production week it seems 922 and Model Number MC131B.

Unfortunately this phone also suffers the same nicotine colouring problem and furthermore has added a secondary issue of which it is getting noticeably warm (back of unit) after 20 minutes of generally light browsing.

The unit that I had the experience of comparing with the other week that was perfectly satisfactory had a Model Number of MC132B (white) .. whether or not the "32B" part relates to white I have no idea; but also noticed his serial number was radically different to mine towards the end (the two problem units ending with 53NP ..)

This unit will also be going back later in the week .. ; and I can categorically say that for me personally, week 22 units with MC131B model numbers would remain a concern for me! The difference between two units can be night and day, and its not right that some people will be accepting units that are far from satisfactory.

The screen on my 3GS is certainly warmer/more yellow than my 3G. It bothers me, because I have to increase the brightness considerably on my 3GS (over the 3G) for it to be satisfying, which is of course a drain to my battery. Here are two images of my phones side-by-side (3GS on the left). How do these images compare with the experiences of others with this issue? The first picture is taken with both brightnesses set to 50% with auto-brightness set to on, while the second image shows the considerable difference between the two when the brightness is at a minimum.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I have an iPhone 3GS, and I noticed in the very centre of the screen is a kinda washed out yellow spiral, which fades a little unless I tap somewhere on the screen, in which case it begins to make the phone vibrate and the spiral starts to kinda change to a goldish-black colour, spinning with the letters "OCD" imprinted in the centre...

Much ado about nothing?... could you be the very same obsessive types who were NEVER happy with their iMac screens?. ROFL!

I have a question. My 3GS has a yellow tint. I had my displayed replaced but my replacement still has it. Can I still return it for a refund?

fixed via display replacement @ North Michigan Ave Genius Bar.

guy was kind of skeptical, told him to go downstairs and check it out next to a display(all black 16gb wk 23 were PERFECT), he pulls out his and looks side by side, said "whoah, that's weird", called 2 other Geniuses over who agreed and said this has been more of an issue with White 3GS, got the display replaced.

i have picture of both the old and new display, but on my 2G at home.

I got my 23 replaced with a 27. The 23 was just slightly yellow at the bottom and this 27 is washed out. I shoulda kept the 1st one. I'm going back tomorrow to try again

I'm severly color blind and would appreciate is someone could tell me if mine has a yellowish tint. It's a week 26 model.

ru kidding?

you're kidding right? this is a screen shot, I don't think that will show anything, will it ?

Just took the plunge today and got a 921. Surprisingly old considering the store's shipment of 3GSes came in today. I was expecting 926 or 927. Anyway, my screen is yellowish as well, but not bad enough for me to try to exchange it. It's only really noticeable in the SMS app with the full white page. Other than that, the build quality is extremely good: no light leak, perfect bezel alignment, uniformly yellow screen (no gradient), no rattle when shaking. I'll stay.

I've got an MC131B, and yes - the screen is SLIGHTLY warmer than the 3G, so I must re-iterate; you guys ARE OBSESSIVE, and it really is NOT an issue nor slightly noticable.

I'm sure you sit there picking out skin imperfections in your girlfriends?. No?. Probably because you don't have enough hours in the day left, to admire her beauty, BECAUSE you spend ALL your time obsessing over non-existant "faults".

Sheesh kids - move on - didn't anyone ever tell you that nothing is perfect?. Mine is warmish colour, but meh; so what?!!.

Ok you **** twit. There is a BIG difference between "warmer" and piss yellow/uneven color.

I have a "warmer" screen and thats ONLY after exchanging it 3 times. Some here have a screen that is WHITE up top and yellow at the bottom. Thats not right. Some have an even yellower bottom, white middle and pink top. Some have screens that are blurry because they are washed out.

Obsessive. Uh huh. It's called a crap defect is what it's called. However, thanks for you opinion. :)

Took my phone to apple today and they replaced the screen, but not because it was yellow. It was because there was a gradient and it was washed out. New one is still yellow as were 90% of the iphones on display, but the screen looks much better. Its funny my wifes 2g is extremely blue, my old 2g is pink and my 3gs is yellow. My brother's 3g has the nicest and brightest screen. I can deal with the warm screen just not one that is washed out and uneven. It sucks apple replaced my first 3gs because the reception was horrible, but the screen was perfect.
