I just got one of these monitors today but sadly my new 980 GTX didn't arrive at the same time. I've currently got 1 x ATI 5870 and 1 x ATI 5770 and this might seem like a stupid question but can I use an output on each to 2 inputs on the monitor to get it to work in 4k until my GTX arrives?

Thanks for any help

10.10.3 at 4k 60hz

Signed up for public beta of 10.10.3. Installed it switched from scaled to optimized for monitor in Display preferences, it is now 4k at 60 hz was 50 hz under 10.10.2. So another successful conversion.

That is great news. I may try another one and hope for a uniform white point once 10.10.3 drops officially.

It's about to get better when Apple releases devices with DP 1.3 AND HDMI 2.0.

There are already HDMI 2.0 60Hz TVs in the wild which work with GTX 980/970 cards.

Once Apple makes the HDMI 2.0 world available, a lot of these 4K TVs larger than 40 inches become target external monitors for Macs.

THAT is going to be SCHWEET. :D :apple:

Just got the GTX980 from macvidcards and can got 60hz over display port straight away. Monitor looks amazing!

Will drive that thing at 50hz or 60hz @3840. Still using Mavericks as a productive system, hopefully 10.11 will be a worthy succesor so I can use 4K@60hz somewhere in the future.

it's running 60hz @ 4096 x 2160 but I am getting a strange intermittent flicker and sometimes complete drop out. It's a bit weird but hoping I can find a fix.

Are you running 10.10.3 beta or are you on an earlier release using a mod like SwitchResX?

I'm on 10.10.2 and DP1.2. Which did work at 60hz straight away. Just the flickers. Do you think it's worth installing the 10.10.3 beta?

----------

just to add to that I've tried HDMI (which I can only get up to 1080p on) but no flickering on HDMI. The cables are all brand new so I'd like to think that's not the issue (also other folk seem to have the same problem)

Just a bit more info. Not sure if it helps.

Others on this thread are reporting that 10.10.3 has improved support for full 4K. Looks like Apple have updated the drivers so might be worth giving it a shot, if you don't mind running a pre-release version of OS X. Get the feeling it's not that far off an official launch.

It's also been said that you have to use the supplied LG cables rather than one of your own as that's been known to cause problems too.

Good luck!

well i gave it a shot an whilst 4k worked and without flickers there are no Nvidia drivers for 10.10.3 yet so the refresh rate is terrible on the OSX drivers. Basically unusable so going to roll back and wait for the update i think.

Thanks :)

Got it working. The GTX 980 came with a mini display port to Display port adaptor. I was using that and it turns out the monitor didn't like that at all. I've now taken that off and using the mini display port in the monitor then the display port in the card. Which is working flawlessly.

If anyone else has issues I'd certainly think about cables.

I’m currently using the LG 31MU97 with it’s display port and also it’s mini-displayport for my nMP/D500 and the old Mac Pro 5,1/R9 280X OC (flashed).
As already said in this Thread I’m really happy about the improvements with 10.10.3 concerning 4K support – finally we get real 4K @ 60 Hz ;O)!

Whereas OS X 10.10.3 on my nMP already offers a wide varity of useful HiDPI resolutions none of those (e.g. 2560x1350, 3008x1586 etc.) are available with my Mac Pro 5,1 and it's 280X - but then of course there is still SwitchResX and Display Menu...

10.10.3 might finally get me switching my productive Macs from Mavericks to Yosemite.

How do you find 2560x1350 HiDPI? I've read elsewhere that as it's scaled and not pixel doubled then the look isn't quite as good as the recommended (but far too large) retina setting. At 2560x1350 do you still consider it "retina"? What I mean is, is it a big step up from a standard, old fashioned display or eye poppingly better with a noticeable improvement in text readability?

I'm asking because the main reason I want to upgrade to 4K is for text clarity as I spend most of my day editing code. Yes, I could use a larger font setting, but kind of defeats the object of having lots of code on screen at once so I can see what's going on.

Hi AJClayton,
to my eye the HiDPI 2560x1350 (which I currently select with "SwitchResX" or "Display Menu" as I'm typing this on my MP 5,1/280X where this resolution is not part of OS X 10.10.3) is really good, a lot better than "normal" QHD 2560x1440 of a non-retina iMac or my 27" Apple Cinema which is standing to the left of the LG.

Most of the time I'm using HiDPI 2560x1350 (office, Safari etc.) or HiDPI 3200x1687 (Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One, Adobe CS/CC etc.), my current setting is left display/27" ACD, center display/LG 31MU97, right display/Dell UP3214Q.

In my opinion the HiDPI resolutions of the LG (& UHD Dell with HiDPI 2560x1440) are superior to the old QHD resolution of the 27" ACD/TBD/iMac.

If you use an old Mac like my Mac Pro 5,1 and a "(flashed) PC graphics card" I would recommend SwitchResx and Display Menu to get all the possible HiDPI resolutions you want.
When I use my nMP and 10.10.3, OS X already offers all those useful HiDPI resolutions.

Thanks for the detailed reply. The graphic you included really shows what a difference it makes. My existing monitor is an ACD 30" which is just over 100 ppi so the step up will be even better for me.

With the help of people such as yourself, I've pretty much made up my mind to go for an LG. I'm just going hold fire for the official release of 10.10.3 to see if Apple and LG update their specs to show 60Hz, but that's pretty much a given from the experiences of those on this thread running the beta. I've got a nMP so I'll get the full list of resolutions you mentioned.

Interesting that you have a 3 screen set up. I'm running 2 with the second a small 20" Dell (98ppi) I mainly use the Dell for keeping half an eye on emails. Could keep the ACD, but tempted to sell it not least because it uses a slightly unreliable Dual link DVI adapter. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for your feedback, really appreciate it. What's better - the LG or the Dell? Too close to call?

One final thing. I'll be running the LG at one of the scaled resolutions as native will be far too small for me. As it's only got D300's, I was concerned that my nMP would be a bit stretched with all the scaling-up-scaling-down going on 60 times a second, so I spoke to Apple. They did some research and came back to me to say that the D300 will be fine doing that so I've no need to worry.

I'm right out of excuses now. Soon be time to dust off the credit card I think. ;)

I got one at B&H for $1167 and will bet the new beta 3 will be out soon as a finished product. I have D700 cards so i am sure it will work fine. Due to snow i should get it Monday. Apple will be awhile before they have a new stand alone monitor.

2015 rMBP-13"(12,1) & Intel Iris 6100 Gpu - True 4k?

Will be curious to see if the latest 2015 rMBP-13"(12,1) - with Intel Iris Graphics 6100 - can run one or two LG-31MU97 monitors at full resolution.

Apple (quote) rMBP/13"/2015 - "Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display, and up to 3840 x2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colours."

But no mention of true 4k (@60Hz). However, the Intel Gpu(28w) specs seem up to it.

How did you get that price?

BH lists it for $1299. How did you get it for $1167? With HP's 5K coming out soon, I'm surprised prices are going up?

I also have D700's. How is the monitor working for you?

When you say Beta 3, is this monitor firmware, OS X, or something else?
