Fascinating. I hope you're not trolling! I'm wondering whether this will work on a recent iMac then? Has anyone got one to test?

on the handful of LG 5K's I tried, they all down sampled to 2560x1440. Using a similar spec MBPretina as the other user, same situation and even a newer 2015 15-inch spec'd out model.
Though it does not seam feasible to get 5K down a single Thunberbolt 2 channel.....

Exactly - 5K is well over TB2's 20 Gbps. I assume Sierra is being a bit misleading - rendering an interface sized as though it was a 5120 x 2880 screen but in fact only sending a 4K resolution.

Apple does some weird upsample/downsample trick. I think what is happening is that it renders as 5K then gets sent to the screen downsampled as 4K since thunderbolt 2 doesn't have the bandwidth to do 5K.
that would be correct. the max bandwidth for thunderbolt 2 is 20Gbps and it takes more than 20 to run 5k.

People have posted performance hits running at 5k, someone recently mentioned Final Cut is considerably slower or things like resizing Safari window on the monitor vs laptop only.

For those that noticed the performance hit at 5k, have you tried a 4k monitor?
I'm curious if the performance hit is the same on a 4k or if it has something to do with how Apple is splicing 2 images together to form a 5k image over one cable. Thanks.

So looks like the safe bet is to get a 4k display right now. The 5k units are having issues it seems.

The 4K has its share of issues. I've experienced sleep/wake, black screen, and various other minor issues with my UltraFine 4K.

Id imagine both are or would have similar issues.

I had two initially ordered and sent those back (dead pixels, really bad discoloration/yellowing) and the two I'm testing now have sporadic green dots, which is not great when working with dark video or photography. And compared to the many iMacs we've deployed, none had any coloration or pixel issues.

And given its only a 1 - year warranty, not really impressed at this point

I do think Apple messed this up. 1 year warranty with no ability to get AppleCare; the problem of "who's responsible?" ; do we go to LG with issues? ; do we go to Apple wish issues? It's just NOT going to be as seamless an experience now, because of that disconnect.

Just seems like a bit of a comedy of errors. It wouldn't be too hard for Apple to take their 5K iMac, and just make a screen-only version of it. What are we missing here?

I really like my new 5K LG display, but can't help wishing it were a little more fully-baked out of the box.

On the topic of AppleCare, has anyone considered or had experience with LG Premium Care?

Normally I would not invest in extended warranties however since this is a 1st for this product I'm seriously considering it. I did the online quote and looks like it's about $70 us for 3 years.

anyone try using the latest macbooks to run 2x LG 5k Ultrafine displays?
I had to return my 15"/16/460 for a Bluetooth issue but I was running dual 5k's for 1-2 weeks and it was great. I didn't have any of the issues that have been reported by others. I did notice the mbp ran a bit warmer but nothing I would ever be concerned about.

Edit: sorry you asked specifically about the MacBook not MacBook Pro

YES!! Although I have had this with the LG 4K. Also, if I put the MacBook to sleep whilst connected to the display, the MacBook restarts at some point and I get a sleep-wake error message/restart message. This is not an isolated issue and there are quite a few threads on this.

I am returning the LG 4K and have a 5K on preorder now. It is disappointing to learn that the 5K also suffers from this problem...

I want to add, as it might be related, that I had a 2013 15" MBP that did this for some time when connected to the Elgato or OWC Thunderbolt docks. It was quite a few OS revisions before it went away.

I've had similar issues again with the 2016 13" MBP plugged into the same docks. I have a feeling this isn't the monitors but issues with TB3 drivers that I hope will eventually get worked out.

Have you tried setting your MacBookPro resolution to the 2nd of the 4 scaled options? I ask because the 13" has a 2560x1600 resolution. The 'default' retina setting is actually not a true 2:1 retina resolution (1280x800) like the 5K display, but rather a software scaled 1440x900, which takes CPU to do.

I think you will find the 5K will run much smoother with your 13" set to that 1280x800 resolution.

I had no idea. That is extremely annoying. I don't even have the 5K yet (should this Friday) but I noticed this while checking out this thread. I just changed the resolution on my machine to this. Bleh. (Now I want a 2880x1800 in my 13". Haha. I'm never satisfied.)

Checked today and they're still showing 6-8 weeks delivery time for these. I wonder if that's because they underestimated demand and/or were testing the market or if there's something more to it.

What is everyones experience with exchanges through Apple, any issue? They won't let me exchange the 2nd one for a 3rd, only a refund and if I order again and it has a problem they're saying they can't send multiple exchanges. Doesn't sound right at all...all of these have either had issues with blacking out or a lot of dead pixels.

Otherwise they are not bad displays

So with this monitor, could I plug something like this:

...into the back of the monitor and just have one cable for power/USB going to the MBP from the monitor and everything on that hub would work as expected?

You can get the cheaper one without pass through power. The monitor itself provides power. This one is cheaper and provides the same functionality: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=14503

The item you reference is only really necessary if you have a single port MacBook.

Just got mine and plugged it in. First impression is that the display is absolutely stunning to look at. The level of detail is superb looking at raw photos in Capture One Pro and Lightroom. Massive upgrade over a normal 27" 2560 x 1440 pixel monitor. It definitely have a bit warmer color temperature than the MacBook Pro screen, so I'll have to see whether it needs calibration. :)

BTW, I was about to freak out when I saw a line of clearly lighter pixels   but it turned out it was just the rim of the MBP's open lid that reflected onto the screen. :D :p

I never had an Retina iMac so this glossy screen is a new thing for me, but the contrast is definitely boosted by it. Some of my photos just jumps out in the face, really happy so far.

Just ordered one of these and the delivery wait is 6-8 weeks. Have people been getting this early or is the estimate accurate?

Are you in the US? I'm in California and just checked online and apple.com says if I order now and pay for fast shipping I can have the monitor delivered tomorrow. None showing in stock at the store though.
