Will do in a bit (super busy getting some science results out right now). Can you or anybody here give me advice on how to check somewhat objectively on the lines? Some have said they're faint, and I don't want to make lines up. Is there something like a test image I can use to see the lines clearly if they exist?

about:blank in any browser will do. Lines are most visible when screen brightness is high - set it to maximum, get used to it for a while if you're in well lit place (it's really bright), then look at the screen from ~20 cm distance. Lines are grey and slightly angular - almost horizontal, but going from top right to bottom left. They also seem to "pulse" if looked at closely, but it may be just me seeing things, as I saw no mention of it anywhere (and this issue was discussed over and over again).

Just to be clear:

Do you guys anticipate the new 13" MBP to have a better display (or at least equal) than the MBA?

One of the things that surprised me about the unibody MBs was how the display was not as good as the even the Rev A MBA.

If the new MBP screen is equal or better than that of the MBA, then that will be a huge factor to me. I cannot tell just by the new specs they have listed.

There was talk of 60% higher color gamut in the keynote. Same as in the 17 inch MBP, but now extended to the entire line (not the MBA though). I think that's what people are referring to.

Scottsdale, I have a 1.6 GHZ Rev B WITHOUT lines. I have heard you and others speculate that the lines issue is a power issue. The battery in my current Rev B does "seem" to not last as long as the Rev B it replaced (the first one had the lines). Do you think a Rev B without lines would have a noticeable difference in battery life?

I may be imagining the difference in battery life, but it's NOT because I have been thinking about this screen lines/power issue all along... that possibility just occurred to me.

Thoughts?

I have a revB without lines. It has the 9C8F screen.

How many hours are you getting on battery and on what settings and while doing/running what?

I have a new macbook air 2.13 and I dont think I have lines?

To find out, go to DISPLAY under System Preferences, then click
on the COLOR TAB, then OPEN PROFILE, scroll down to the
second to last line and click it. It shows the model.

9C8F are the ones w/o lines.

00009C90 :(

i guess i do have lines just dont know what im looking for?

They would be faint and greyish in color in very light backgrounds, mostly white like Google's and also can be viewed within the tabs in Apple's website. They look as if your screen was dirty and you wiped it with a not so good cloth!

just cause he has another display model doesnt necessarily mean he HAS to have lines right? I suggest you look for yourself and come to your own conclusion

The 9C90 display (used in the 1.6 HDD rev.B mainly) is notorious for having lines. I've yet to see one without the issue.

If Apple is stating that there is a new screen in the new MBAs, and there are people posting that their screen ID is coming up with 9C90, isn't that faulty advertising and grounds for a lawsuit?

Or did Apple not state the MBAs have new displays?

I've never heard them stating it. Whence your believe they did? They updated the Macbook Pro's and lowered the price on the MBA's.

wifi on, light web browsing, maybe Microsoft Word, and iTunes with brightness at about 2/3 - 3/4, and the keyboard backlighting on (depending on ambient lighting) will get me roughly 2.25 - 2.5 hours, whereas I used to get a little over 3.

No new displays stated in keynote.

I've decided not to even mess with it. Not worth the gamble of getting a 9C90 and having to argue with a Genius and do multiple returns. A shame. I've decided to sacrifice portability in favor of power and expandability, so I'm getting one of the new 15" models. (The difference between the 13" MBP and 15" MBP is much less pronounced, IMO, than the difference between the MBP and the MBA, so I might as well enjoy the higher screen resolution as well.)

Why not? The new processor usually means its a new Revision, rather than just a drive capacity bump. It may not be a huge revision, but its still Rev C.

But 2,1 is the SAME as rev B. A 2,2 would be the spec bump of essentially the same MBA. A 3,1 would be the true rev C MBA. Am I wrong here?

I am getting ready to go for my appointment right now (Personal Shopping).

If there are lines on the MBA 2.13 SSD that I buy today, I will immediately return it. In that case, I will go home and buy the 1.86 SSD rev B refurbished for $1449! If I am going to have lines, I want it to be as cheap as possible.

I truly believe the line issue is a POWER issue from everything I have READ and SEEN with those affected units. From what I have read, when a computer manufacturer is trying to save power or extend battery life, they reduce the power set allocated for the display. Sometimes the display will show lines or weird patterns depending on the specs of the displays themselves. This is probably why one model has lines most of the time, one model has lines sometimes, and the new model (9C8F) doesn't have lines. I do believe what someone said here that a firmware update may just correct it in a matter of seconds. It's too bad Apple hasn't cared enough about it to correct it.

I wish Apple just used the 9C8F display in the 2.13 GHz MBA. It seems to always be perfect.

Keep us updated Scottsdale. I am now on the verge of choosing the 13" MBP rather than the MBA. I want the MBA, but if the line issue is still present, I don't think I'll bite. I think I'll rather deal with the glossy/glass than the lines.

Maybe you can take a pic of the 2.13 MBA's screen?

And again, thanks for doing this.

For what it's worth, the two new MBAs (1.86HDD & 2.13SDD) I checked out in the Tokyo Apple Store yesterday both had 9C90 screens. I'm not exactly sure whether I saw lines or not, but it seems clear that there were no part changes between the Rev. B and Rev. C LCD screens...

Lines Lines Lines. The worst I have ever seen on the first new MBA I opened 9C90! Sucks. At least before there was the 9C9A without lines on many high end MBAs like mine. Now high end has 9C90!

Ahh you're kidding! Does this make up your mind? Are you getting a Rev B instead? Or possibly going with a 13" MBP?

I don't know what to do.

I just called Apple to return my MBA with lines. The rep I spoke to talked to someone on the product team, and the product guy said he had heard of the lines issue and had the impression it was uncommon. My rep put me in touch with a sales rep who offered a full refund or an exchange. I asked how many times I can exchange if I keep getting the issue, before I have to get a refund, she said 3 times.

So, I thought, what the heck, I'll try exchanging and see if I can get a good one.

BTW, the AppleCare people I spoke to were super friendly and understanding. I'm consistently impressed by their phone support folks.

This makes me sad. Truly sad. I have a perfectionist mind set, and lines would make me go insane.

Damn.

This is even more pathetic that the product was updated and this issue was not fixed. I'm glad I jumped ship to the MBP.
