Seeing how MBA got updated not so long after rev B, I was hoping they internally admitted the lines and was the reason for rev C appearance, since other technical changes have been pretty much minimal. What an optimistic expectation. Damn Apple. I'm going to be stuck with rev A SSD for as long as... Apple doesn't wake up...

In fact, I might not care about the faintest of lines, if it isn't for the headaches... I've felt little of it while staring at rev B back then as some people have reported. Now that is a total killer...

Mojibake, which Apple store is that? I need to go check rev C myself. Possibly every Apple store has one of them by now? I hope Shibuya one has it, as that is the closest for me. Rev B seems to have taken forever to be displayed in stores.

I am taking number three home without opening. Same thing on number two. Only the lines were far less visible. Only on white background. Maybe number three is a charm??? Want to keep until Monday so can test it.

My Apple store had one of the new Airs on display. It had lines and was 9C90.

I bought a 15" MBP. Sucks not to have the Air form factor, but honestly I couldn't be happier. The new screen (9CA3) looks really great, extremely even backlighting with no bleed at all, no dead pixels, a truly great screen. That's really important to me. I decided on the 15" for the larger screen and higher resolution, since I was already sacrificing the portability of the Air anyway. On the upside, I get the glass trackpad and the ability to bump the RAM up to 8GB at some point, as well as throw in a big SSD when the price is right.

As long as I've been using Apple computers, their failure to address the lines issue on the MBA really shouldn't come as a surprise to me, but I had really hoped they would seize upon this opportunity to fix it. The rev A screen was so perfect and then so many of the rev B screens were crap. Sad.

C'mon, get opening and reporting back on presence or not of lines. Don't forget the screen model ;)

I just opened it. 00009C90. Lines. Will send it back for a full refund. At this point I'm tired of Apple. They just made three scratches in the lid of my MBP when it had to go in for a repair after I used it for only 5 months. Furthermore I had to fight with them for two weeks before they finally admitted that the Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter I bought back in Dec was faulty and sent me a new one (although I know that this is a very widely known problem).

Sorry guys that the "lines" are driving you nuts just like they did to me before I got my 9C8F on the revB after opening 3 machines :)

BTW, the 9C8F is very rare and hard to find so maybe I will sell mine one day for double the price :p

Why does everyone keep saying that the "lined" displays were more commonly found in the 1.6 HDD base model? Does that mean that Apple is acknowledging that some display samples are inherently inferior to others? I have a rev. B 1.6 HDD from February, a 9C8F and it appears to be without problems.

Wow some good news. Which Apple store did you purchase this at? Its probably completely random, but maybe they got the good batches?

I ordered it on-line Monday form the Apple Store.
I received it Tuesday AM.
...may have been one of the first, as I was rapidly clicking the refresh on the store :)

I have to jump in and say that even though it hurts to see the value of my MBA drop after just buying it in March I am starting to feel a lot better knowing I managed to snag one of the few 9C8F screens out there. I love it and encourage everyone not satisfied with your screen to keep exchanging until you get this screen. I love Apple products and their service but this screen issue is ridiculous.

My MBA is my perfect companion to my imac 24! Sure I would love more memory and more battery time but apart from that it is a joy to use!

Btw, during vacation I have to run Vista and I have used Fusion successfully so far but given the reviews lately would Parallels be a better fit due to lower memory usage given my 2 Gig of RAM?

Thanks

Hey, a fellow Tokyoite. :) Yesterday I went to Shibuya. The MBAs were sitting quietly in a corner on the first floor, totally unlabeled (maybe the price tags and such hadn't been set up yet?). But when you went into the system profiler, one was clearly a 2.13GHz and thus Rev C. The other was a 1.86GHz so I'm not sure how to tell whether it was a Rev B or C (checking the battery capacity didn't really reveal anything).

It'd be good if you could swing by and post your opinion on the screens of those two. Using the test pattern thing I saw flickering and the shade was darker on one side (with the 1.86 being worse), but I'm not sure if that's related to the lines issue...

Ok just saw my 1.6 120gb is 09c90 and manf date is c2486d00 and manf is 610, now what does all this mean? I do see lines they are horizontal almost in a perfect pattern from top to bottom , best way to describe it is it looks like a bunch of perfect lined finger prints all over, is that the lines you all speak of here? by any chance is this display the reason I feel the ical red icon looks like such a dull red where as on my mac mini its a nicer bright red or am i being to paranoid?

Considering this has been sitting brand new under my bed since february and i just opened it n turned it on today, since i had an older one I was using that I sold last week, would they replace in store for new one or Id have to go through applecare? in either case would they just replace display or give me a whole new unit?
thanks guys

i did screen capture dont know if that will allow you guys to see but here and tell me what u think
http://img32.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=picture1nbi.png

but I also just took a picture from my cam cuz it looks like the screen capture isn't showing it on my dell anyways
http://img31.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img0025v.jpg

in any case im NOT trying to get something for nothing ill pay a difference if i have to or whatever else....I am mad at nobody but myself that i didnt turn this on sooner cause i DO see the lines i need confirmation from you guys though...but jeez even if the new one has lines i dont want it lol....I really didn't think the line issue was THIS widespread ....wow iv always known apple to be a very meticulous company why are they not fixing this? I finally searched this forum and googled it and DAMN im pissed off at myself first than at apple

Just got my New MBA 2.13 GHz with SSD

Hi Guys,

I already own a MACBook 13 (Unibody, 4GB, and SSD) and love it. Though the screen is a little too critical on viewing angle. I ordered and just received the new MBA 2.13 GHz with SSD. I honestly do not see any of the lines mentioned. Here are my display stats:

Manufacturer: 610
Model: 9C90

I checked the screen on different colors, lighting, screen light intesnsity, viewing angle but no lines. I think the screen is better, especially regarding viewing angles than is my current MACBook 13. Should I try a specific set of conditions to see them? Or is it possible I just got lucky?

Sorry to hear of the problems many are having.

Regards,

Joe

I just got rid of my uni MB because of the crappy display. I could not even watch a movie because of the viewing angle. I ordered the new 2.13 MBA because I thought that it always had the best looking display. I have not got it yet but now I am worried. I will be picky this time and return it if its not perect!!!!

There was talk of 60% higher color gamut in the keynote. Same as in the 17 inch MBP, but now extended to the entire line (not the MBA though). I think that's what people are referring to.

What does that mean in terms of the current MBA display vs. the brand new MBP display (13")?

Thanks!

Thanks mojibake for the information. I'll go check it out in a few days or so. Since I know what the lines do look like from the rev B MBA, I'll see how bad (or possibly any better) it is (but I bet it's just the same...) and stare at it for a few mins to see if I get any kind of headaches.

I thought if possible I'd take a photo of the display, but iPhone is your worst bet at doing this... I just tried taking a shot of my rev A, and it's just horrible.

Ahh you're kidding! Does this make up your mind? Are you getting a Rev B instead? Or possibly going with a 13" MBP?

I don't know what to do.

The new 13pro 09CA1 display is stunner! True blacks and viewing angles are nice. The fact that the rev C MBA is *still* a gamble with the lines is customer feedback gone awry.

I would have thought that my 4 returns of the Rev B lines would have had someone ask "Sir Jobs, permission to change display vendors, sir?"

Your 4 returns, my 3 returns, etc. etc. it all adds up. But clearly no-one at Apple gives a crap, or if they do it's cheaper NOT to implement a new display or provide a fix (suggests that a firmware fix is not applicable, obviously hardware issue).

All our returns just get shoved into the refurb inventory, where 99% of buyers will just be glad of a further discount and not even notice never mind complain, about the lines.

OK. im literally in Shibuya store right now posting from its 2.13 (god, hell of a people in town... like the whole city is inside a commuter train...)

They have rev C 1.86 and 2.13 and I'm rather impressed at the display as the 1.86 has basically no lines and 2.13 barely has lines those are visible, if u totally look close enough, that is as close as 10cm when regularly u are around 30cm off the display. (Looked close on a "about:blank" page in safari but the lines are more visible more light blue/grey background instead of totally white on this unit.) The rev B I saw some months ago had totally visible lines with slight headache I just waved in the air and went out the local electronics store. Using 2.2 gamma made the lines a bit more visible but imo, from day to day use, it's faint enough I dont actually care about this and no headaches using this for about 5 minutes so far. I've been depressed by the initial report with lines but maybe this store's guys got some luckier units. Gonna check around a little more.

[edit]
Both got 9C90 and 1.86 does have lines if u actually know about the lines first and target at light grey/blue (just like the color around this reply form. not possible to spot on white background.) within 10cm. I was a big supporter of "no lines or apple gets my anger with 0 penny" but this isn't bad. That was my impression for today, on the 2 models displayed here.

Like someone else said elsewhere, if u "try" to spot the lines desperately on MBA, u tend to see lines on other macbooks too lol...
But its still a fact that models with severe lines exist and those need to be addressed badly.

On a different note, MBP 17 with matte screen is quite beautiful imo. Regular mbp are way too glassy for me. MBA is a nice mix of those.

no lines

Picked up a rev. C MBA at the NYC 5th Ave. Apple store tonight. Was considering going to a 13" MBP when the hinge on my rev. A MBA gave up the ghost. But even though my display is 9C90, there are no lines. In fact, of the four examples of MBAs in the store, none had lines.

The MBP screen looks far glossier the the MBA. Major reflections in the store. That, the fact that the SATA interface is twice as fast, that my old MBA has performed excellently, and that the hinge feels far more solid than on the rev. A made me chose the another Air.

I also just purchased a rev.C MBA @ the same store. On display all were 9C90s (2 were 1.86 and 2 were 2.13) no lines on them including the one I bought which is also 9C90. I was @ the store for a good 2 hours staring at the screens 4inches away and people asked what i was doing and i told them i was smelling if it emitted a weird smell.
