"pre-order" does not mean that you receive the item before other customers. It simply means you commit to the purchase before an item is in hand to sell. pre-orders are or at least should be filled before offering units to the general public. I work for an online collectibles retailer and 80% of our sales for items are on a pre-order basis. it is just a good way to order something in advance so you wont have to worry about hunting it down when it is released.

Southlake Update and reality check?

As of 7:50 PM, no change in shipping status ("not yet shipped"). As of store closing tonight (6PM), the sales people at the Apple Store "hoped" for Tuesday shipment, but had nothing to confirm one way or another-though they seemed optimistic.

would it be possible/likely that ship thousands of units to the US secretly? Given the 13 hour or so time difference in China, etc. what would happen? At the instant of shipment all of our status notices would change at once? I would like to get my chubby fingers on my MBA on Tuesday, but we are getting close to the wire for that to happen without a change in shipping status.

Any thoughts on that, fellow posters?:

I am picturing the opening scene in Willy Wonka when all the chocolate is getting packed.

Let's hope Steve is like Willy Wonka. :p

They're not going to ship it secretly. This is not some massive coverup that Apple doesn't want you to know about. I'm sure there are plenty of Airs in the United States already. Many will probably go to stores next week.

I thought I was getting antsy about getting this thing. Geez.

I'm looking at the Tom Bihn Empire Builder bag, does anyone have any suggestion's or advice. For my MBP i've got a Brenthaven, and short of not having enough room to fit my school books in it's great. I'm looking for a bag that'll allow me to keep my MBA in it, organize my folders, and keep my school books in it all at the same time having a sexy appeal to it. What do y'all think???

I think if we didn't have this forum to while away our time, we'd all lose our flippin' minds! Sad, but true! LOL
:D

If we didn't have this forum we would actually LIKE Macs a lot more especially the AIR. Lot's a haters depend on this forum to express their true love for Apple's products.

I think part of the problem is that the first impressions of this machine (most of course from people who haven't even seen or touched it ;) ) are very black-and-white.

My guess is that things will moderate once the machines are out in the wild and real people will start using them and posting their impressions.

Meanwhile-- I hope that Apple is about to ship a bunch of these to the pre-order folks, otherwise there are going to be massive cancellations of on-line orders. I would be shocked if the stores were not well-stocked, that would be a very un-Jobs-like screwup.

Looks like we'll at least be able to check them out soon.

Agreed, once the MBA hits the streets people will buy it and love it just as they did when the iPod mini came out. Just before it's release people bitched and bitched about it being $249 and they could get the full sized iPod for $50.00 with more features. When the mini hit the streets it was one of Apple's biggest selling iPods ever.
Ignorance is bliss. This is the same situation about very ignorant Windows PC users. They talk trash about the Mac before even trying it out and then for some reason we see more switchers after they've played with someone else's Mac.

MY AMAZON ORDER STATUS... I ordered the base configuration 1.6/80 from Amazon about an hour or so after Steve's keynote. I received an e-mail confirmation at Tue 1/15/08 12:00 PM Pacific. The current status below hasn't changed since my initial order:

Shipping estimate: February 11, 2008
Not Yet Shipped: 1 item - delivery estimate: February 18, 2008 - February 22, 2008
REPRICING TO GOLD BOX PRICE... Also, I wonder about an earlier post regarding a Gold Box 5% off deal. Has anyone tried to get their purchase price readjusted due to the Gold Box deal? If so, when did you have the deal and when did you get the price adjusted?

SLEEVES AND CASES... I eagerly await my MBA and currently consider sleeves from Wrappers (wrappers.typepad) and WaterField. My main concern with Waterfield is my poor experience with my Titanium PowerBook (Gigabit Ethernet) sleeve, which seemed loose for my taste. I believe that a tight fit will be crucially important for the MBA. With my 12" PowerBook, I had a Shinza sleeve, which I loved but eventually stretched over time. Any opinions? Any other cool cases on the market?

We've had some three WF sleeves in my family, two for MacBooks and one for a SZ-series VAIO and all fit absolutely spot on (especially if you fitted an MacBook into the VAIO sleeve :D), so maybe yours was just a Monday unit? But I do agree, a tight fit (especially thickness-wise ) will be an issue with the Air. That's why I'm anxious to test if my ex-MacBooks WF Sleeve will be an acceptable fit for the Air or will it be too loose.

So you come into a thread created specifically for people who are eagerly anticipating their forthcoming purchase and then tell them they are all stupid and to get a grip ?

If you are not interested then get the hell out of the thread. If all you can contribute is insult then please just go elsewhere.
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Back on topic.

If anyone wants to know if there is order is actually in the process of getting ready to ship there is an easy way to find out.

If you ordered from the Apple online store, simply check your order status and then click the 'cancel order' button (DONT WORRY WE ARE NOT CANCELING YOUR ORDER) it will take you to a confirmation page. However if your order is ready to ship you will get the error message that you can not cancel this order. If you are able to cancel the order and choose one of the reasons from the drop down menu then your still no closer to shipping :)

I think that you have to re-order the item to get the gold box price and cancel your original order. To me, it was worth it...even if I have to wait a little longer...as I'll save a little over $200.00 with the tax figured in. I ordered over the weekend and cancelled my order with Apple. My delivery date estimate is March 27; however, it will ship way before then per Amazon CS as that's just a blanket date they give until they get their first shipment in. I've pre-ordered a couple of Macs from Amazon and normally they ship within a week from when Apple ships, regardless of the date they give you.
Of course, you could try and talk them into giving you the gold box discount anyway-never hurts to ask...good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

UPDATE: From the Amazon goldbox help page: Gold Box Quick Picks coupons cannot be applied to orders already placed with Amazon.com. So it looks like you would need to re-order :(

I second that! People like that always dumbfound me and I have to wonder what they're like outside the message boards.
