For me the iPhone is a link in a chain of iPhone, iPads, Macs, Apple TV, probably a 2nd gen Apple Watch, and entertainment media. While competitors may have some interesting tech none of it is worth breaking that chain or rat rodding my technology. And I don’t feel trapped in an ecosystem because I’m quite enjoying the overall experience and making it all work (mostly) seamlessly sometimes means not being on the bleeding edge on individual parts of the chain.

2016 is the year that Android has clearly taken over Apple.

Obviously iOS still has some great features and the apps are beautilfully polished, but hardware the iPhone is probably a couple of years behind Samsung. Android Marshmallow is excellent and Nougat will be even better. The Play Store gets better every few months.

There are still a few things that Apple/iOS does better, but at this stage, it's not even a close contest anymore. Crikey, look at the Note 7. It's streets ahead.
Hardware wise Samsung is killing it, the GS7 is a freaking b-e-a-utiful phone.
This is coming from a iPhone user.

My only gripe is.... Android... + imessage/facetime.

Apple is saving the big upgrade for the 10 year, we will see what apple comes up with.
I think at this point apple will be fine for one more year of a small upgrade.

EDIT: Also they should up the screen size to 5 inches and maybe 5.8 inches

I switched to Galaxy S7 Edge after being a long time, all-Apple user. Love the phone and still works great with my MacBook and iPad. Switching to the Note7 today.

Check out the Gear S2 also if you're looking for a smart watch. I'm loving it, even switching from Apple Watch.

2016 is a great year to move to Samsung and android.

I fear by the time Apple catches up Samsung will have brought out something even better. Will see.

Or Samsung/Android will just be running away with the features, refining stuff they've already had practice building for years. Whereas Apple will be venturing for the first time in some territories. Having said that, it'll be exciting to see Apple's take on edge and/or bezel-less screens or wireless (contactless?) charging. Heck, even their own version of an IRIS scanner one day. No doubt Apple is doing their own internal testing of these things, and no doubt Apple will learn from others who have started the process.

Have to agree with this. The Apple iPhone still has its handful of advantages, and everything else is still good to great. But at this stage in the game, it's clear that others have started to leave them behind in a number of departments -- many of which Apple was once the best in.

And I'm not talking only about hardware. The software is also getting easier and easier to use, and clearly more feature-rich and flexible than iOS.

Android has improved massively over the last 3 years. Not perfect, but then what platform is??

As for FaceTime - this week, Google are rolling out Duo which is their own Facetime rip-off. Works perfectly. Solution!

iMessage??? That's why God invented WhatsApp and why Facebook bought it for $18bn.

(PS - I was on iOS for 5 years before moving to Android, and I keep my apps platform-agnostic in case I wish to switch).

Reverse question, what does Android lack that 99 percent of iPhone users would need on a daily basis?

Answer is NOTHING. :)

I think it comes down to this... at the end of the day, I trust the Android camp (Google, Samsung, etc.) to close the gaps that may exists faster than I expect Apple to close the gaps that exists for them. Especially if this is the pace Apple wants to "innovate" at (in respect to both hardware and software).

Yes there are alternatives of course, but its hard to convert people to use another messenger/video app.
Facetime/imessage is built in and default so its very easy to use right away.

If only you could have what's app transfer and sync via tablets or laptops.

So is this duo for 7.0 or be had for 6.0?

I definitely understand it's annoying to get everyone to join a messaging app you're on. And iMessage clearly has its advantages regardless.

However, I can still effectively text anybody I want. As someone else said, if you want to communicate with people closest to you, you will find a way. We have the most powerful means of communication in our hands. Life finds a way. :)

Don't disagree. I use Hangouts.

We'll see how Allo works out. I'm not optimistic given Google's history and lack of clear direction.

Does Allo have sms in the same thread? Like in imessage if I lose data it switches to traditional text. (Blue to Green)

What features does Apple lack.

Oh, the list is pretty long:

Dual edge screens, VR, quick charging, wireless charging, SD slots, retina scanning, native stylus support, a QHD screen with HDR, 4GB of RAM, a 3500 mAh battery, an always on display, the best brightness on any display on the market, proper widgets, wide angle lensed front facing camera, a camera that is as good as the S7/Note 7, Touchwiz features like split screen multi-tasking, smart features like smart alert, Touchwiz shortcuts like double tapping the home button for the camera, Google Now and Google Now on Tap, the new MIMO features for Wifi, Samsung's White Pages spam services, a better designed phone with slimmer profiles while having more mAhs for battery life, Water and Dust resistance, fast wireless charging, USB Type C standard, soon the headphone jack will join the list, AMOLED tech, more storage space as the baseline (64GB or higher), heart rate monitor, more flexibility with wearable technology, less ugly antennas at the back, Gorilla Glass 5, better ergonomics, etc.

That's without listing many of the Android software advantages. Ask Apple to include a lot these features and maybe they can play catch up in 2017 or 2018.

I really don't understand the purpose of these posts. Does it make you feel better posting this in an Apple oriented forum? Are you looking for validation that you made the right choice? Do you feel the need to feel superior to the people that do buy/have an iPhone? I just really don't get it. It's like I'm switching shampoo brands and I'm gonna tell the world that I did.

Uh, this is the alternatives to iOS section...

I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell iPhone users to enable SMS messaging within the iMessages settings because they can't send texts to my Android phone. It is so frustrating and they insist it must be my phone...I just do a face palm and tell them to just do it, and sure enough it works. iMessage is awesome and frustrating at the same time.

I agree overall w/ OP, only I'm using an HTC 10 at the moment and sold my 6s. As much as I've ragged on Apple recently I think it is inevitable that I'll get the next iPhone at some point, there are things about it I miss. My plan going forward is to buy the iPhone at launch. The following July or August I buy an Android phone that I've wanted to try and sell the iPhone at a great price prior to the new one launching. Then come September, buy new iPhone and sell Android. Assuming I grow tired of Android. Repeat the following year. It gives me my Android fix when I need it.

It should be on by default. But apple can be sneaky with this, like it was difficult for people to get texts when they switched from iphone to android.

It's not anymore. It was with iOS 6 and changed to being off by default on iOS 7 (I believe). I've been through the iMessage to SMS gymnastics a lot ((with my switching from Android to iPhone and back).

EDIT: found a few posts to corroborate the timeline iOS 6 to iOS 7 it changed :(

Go back 12 months, it was the s6/edge that was the huge leap forward in hardware and software. The s7 is just a refinement on a great piece of kit.

It's kind of irritating the next iPhone is (probably) going to be not that different from the iPhone 6 when Samsung is miles ahead with the new Note 7. I mean, just look at this comparison when keeping in mind the iPhone 6S Plus is 5.5" and the Note 7 is 5.7":

The Verge Note 7 Review

Many of the big rumors for the 2017 iPhone are already present in the Note 7, S7 Edge, S6 Edge and maybe some older models I don't know about (their curved screen prototype dates back to 2013). Edge screen seemed stupid at the time, but now you have a big screen on a smaller phone and it looks terrific.

So yeah, Samsung stumbled upon a way of making the best smartphone so far (hardware at least). Good for them.

For me, this doesn't even come close to thinking about switching platforms.

I use the iPhone 6 Plus and I'm waiting on the new high-end MacBook Pro while using a Retina MacBook. Apple does more than just smartphone hardware, the fact that they're developing awesome mobile and desktop software along with a great line of Macs (and iPads, Watch, TV) make for a great company to be loyal to. It works together seamlessly and I wouldn't want to miss out on that.

Sure, currently it's not that exciting for us spoiled Apple fans to look at apple.com, but the fact that all new hardware has been delayed so much kind of gives me hope on their next generation of products and the bigger leap they're going to make.

In the end it's just a phone and current iPhones offer a great experience compared to whatever we had five years ago. It's not that big a deal.

Seriously, this should be embarrassing to Apple! I can understand Google because the 6p is significantly cheaper than either of those phones. I totally understand that consumers will still line up in droves to buy the ip7 and it makes good business sense to recycle design if it still makes them money. But on some level there has to be some embarrassment when looking at just how modern Samsung designs look next to Apple. Apple used to be the undisputed leader and regardless of profit took it very seriously.

2 days ago, a co worker saw my edge plus for the first time, after marvelling at the screen, photo quality and sheer design, his exact words were, "wow, it makes my 6+ look prehistoric!!" .
