Because every average joe & mary will end up turning it on anyway, and will end up complaining to friends, and the Genius bar, about their crappy battery-life of just 1.5 hours when they play farmville.

And that's different than the people complaining about the battery life on their 3GS when they have poor 3G connection, brightness at 100 percent, are playing processor heavy games, etc?

Their are better arguments to choose from, I believe, that saying that people will complain about battery life if Flash were implemented.

Well exactly. Apple already have enough people who aren't smart enough to properly manage the battery as it is. They've implemented auto brightness adjustment, and try to inform buyers to switch off WiFi and 3G when not being used.

Just imagine how bad the battery life would be for someone playing a processor heavy game in Flash, with WiFi and 3G switched on, at full brightness.

Besides, it's not just the battery life remember. I believe Steve's primary concern was the stability of Flash. I installed the new 10.1 version on my Mac and it crashed Safari 3 times in 2 days. I had to uninstall it. Yes, I know it's still in beta, but it's a familiar experience many people have with Flash regardless.

Crashes happen. I've had several crashes using FCP, Motion, Quicktime and other Apple software offerings.

The notion that software and/or hardware being infallible is silly. Dare I say - computers DO get "tired" if they've been on for several days and/or you're constantly opening and closing programs. "Technically" machines should be consistent in their behavior. Now find me someone that REALLY believes that.

I think you're being a bit excessive with your tone with the guy. He's done nothing worse than most people do all across the Apple dev forums. He's also not even asking for Flash - he hasn't mentioned it once in any of his posts. He's just concerned about HTML5 development on the iPad browser, and I think that's fair to post about.

I completely disagree. This is a beta SDK emulator under NDA. There are appropriate avenues to voice complaints or to let apple know that certain parts of HTML5 that work on the iPhone don't work on the iPad. Macrumors is not the place for this - especially in the light of try to troll.

The iPad emulator had already been gimped probably to hide certain details of the hardware. Its people like the OP that cause this gimping because they cannot stick to their NDA's and make it harder for developers to deliver apps on release day. This is a loss for devs and a loss for the users.

Finally, the OP's concerns are properly addressed in the dev docs. 90% of his concern is in developer guidelines, release notes etc. The rest can be inferred from these documents, which again leads me to the conclusion that he is trolling.

Not to mention that there is no way even to tell if there is an actual problem with HTML5 on the iPad or if the web developers who created the sites in question just made some assumptions or mistakes that make their code not work on the iPad. This is why making judgements about beta hardware or software is a bad idea, especially when the hardware essentially doesn't exist in the real world yet for developers to test on.

I'm glad you posted this, thank you.

Combining that with his previous posts about being a Flash developer and his opinions on Apple and Flash, I had the same conclusion.

:) rather than being pissed, I'm going to get "even". that means I simply won't buy a crippled iPad. sorry Apple lovers, but that's the best way for me to deal with a device that doesn't provide what I want--I just pass. I'm not at all happy that the iPad isn't the cool device I thought it was going to be.

Check out the Dell mini 5. There are multiple videos of it being playe with, seems to do everything the ipad can't. Really smoothly. Running android. The Dell mini 5 is probably the only tablet I'd get. Even though it's only 5" I don't know if that would replace my phone and I have an iPhone. The Dell mini 5 can also be used as a phone.

yup, there are going to be lots of competition for the ipad this year, thanks to Apple refusing to do multitasking and Flash! Not only that, but if the iPad's screen is no more impressive than the Touch, I gotta say I expect that other brands just MIGHT beat apple when it comes to screen "goodness". I have a Storm2 and it's screen is FAR nicer than the Touch. It's brighter, more vivid, has deeper blacks, and cleaner whites. I love my Touch, but I have no illusions about it having an excellent screen. oh, and off-axis viewing is MUCHO better on the Storm2.

Yep, just as people this year will also realize how horrible multi-tasking and Flash on mobile devices performs. Nexus One? Woohoo, great, does multi-tasking! …I've heard nothing but negativity about problems with the multi-tasking on the Nexus One, even from the geekiest of the tech geeks.

Apple seems to succumb to hubris, thinking that people will rush to buy a crippled device (no Flash, no multitasking, no usb) at a premium price.

They've sold 75 million devices "crippled" the same way!

as individuals, we are all allowed our own opinions, believe it or not. Not everyone on the planet worships at the altar of Apple. If I (or Nostromo) say the iPad is "crippled", it is...in our opinions. I actually get to decide for myself if I want to buy Apple products and not you, I can declare that the ipad is "crippled". You can cite sales figures til the cows come home, but I still don't want an ipad. Capiche??

Funny statement seeing as Nostromo declared that we won't buy this. The only thing worse than a smug Mac fanboy is an arrogant condescending Apple hater.

Nostromo's post was clearly suggesting that people aren't going to buy the iPad because it is "crippled" without multitasking and flash. BaldiMac was correctly pointing out that 75 million people have bought devices that are similarly "crippled." I don't see where it says in BaldiMac's that anyone has to buy an iPad. Every factual pro-Apple post isn't an assault on your personal ability to decide what to buy.

it doesn't matter what he was discussing per se, because I ONLY MENTIONED his name because I was discussing OPINIONS. I think you guys need to stop splitting hairs about the content of his posts, as it relates to me merely mentioning his name.

I dont care if he does or doesn't buy one. I don't care if all of you buy an iPad. I don't care, i don't care, I don't care! All I'm saying is that everyone is entitled to voice an opinion. that doesn't include being rude, though. (that's a general comment not directed at any one person)

There's such a thing as a flow of conversation. Jumping in and making a remark that is unrelated to the flow makes it look like you are making a nonsensical statement, and people will call you out for it.

It has nothing to do with worshiping Apple. You can have your opinion so long as you keep your opinion to yourself. If you voice your opinion, then others have the right to express their opinions of your opinion. The term crippled as it is generally understood means that something cannot do what it is expected to do. A human being who can't walk may be considered to be crippled, but a fish that can't walk is just a fish. The iPad was designed not to play Flash. Corvettes are not designed to tow semitrailers cross-country. Does this mean that Corvettes are crippled? How then is the iPad crippled?

The iPad bashers claim that because it has a processor, the iPad is a computer and therefore must do everything that every other computer can do. The problem is that no computer meets this standard. By this logic, it follows then that all computers are crippled. If all computers are crippled, then the term crippled has no meaning.

The bottomline, then, is that your use of the term crippled, whether as a statement of fact or as an expression of opinion, is meaningless and, therefore, irrelevant.

People commented on his opinions, that is what happens on forums. His opinion was that PEOPLE won't buy it. The reply was that PEOPLE have bought it. You then jumped in going on about how everyone has their own opinions and should back off if HE doesn't want to buy it because HE thinks its crippled. YOU changed the message from what was said "PEOPLE" to what supported your trolling best "HE and I".

Then why are you still here, with more posts then just about anyone in this thread, going on and on and on and on if you don't care don't care don't care.

so a positive opinion here can stand unchallenged, but a negative opinion must be derided by the apple-faithful as a sign of derangement, correct?
I love how the apple lovers use so many negative terms to denigrate anyone who doesn't share their lofty opinion of all things-Apple. "apple haters", "apple basher", "ipad bashers".

I'm a huge apple fan but I will tell you first hand:

All this garbage about how Apple's iPad doesn't have flash because it can't handle it, or because it's marketed towards the average consumer and not the tech nerd is RIDICULOUS. Apple is not using flash on the iPad for purely BUSINESS RELATED REASONS

It's really that simple. It could be that Apple doesn't want internet streaming to compete with it's iTunes store. Or, It could be because Apple hates the monopoly that Adobe has on flash, and therefore is trying to make the internet change to open standards, which in my opinion is not a bad thing, but in the short term it hurts their sales, and hurts anyone who may be an iPad. Regardless of the exact reason it is a financially motivated, long run decision. I would love to open safari and go to Hulu, or Fox.com, or ABC.com and watch my favorite TV shows for free - but no! I cant! And that is BULL*****. But at least im actually able to admit it's ********, and not try and blame a million other reasons. So come one people, enough with the excuses..at least for now!

I've been saying essentially the same thing for weeks now--that the lack of Flash is due to Apple not wanting to damage the itunes/app store revenue stream. It's not about battery life and CPU cycles. IT'S ABOUT MONEY!

Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.

To wit, nowhere in my post did I question your sanity. Nor did I criticize you for not liking the iPad. I did, however, take you to task for your reasoning or lack thereof. However, you appear to have adopted the position that there can be no reasonable disagreement with you.

Whine all you want. This future iPad owner will take you to task when if you say things that are illogical or untrue. Don't like it? Too bad.
