I have a M1 mac mini (16GB memory) on 11.2.3 with Samsung G9. Most peripherals are connected via usb 3.0 powered hub. The main issue I have is all my usb devices would stop functioning seemingly randomly.

Happens most frequently when sleeping or screensaver is on which prevented wake up with keyboard/mouse. Even weirder if I disable sleep/screen saver and use a mouse jiggler it would after some time randomly output a loud noise on my usb speaker then all usb devices stop working. Unplugging and replugin USB does not work. If I take out hub and plug directly it works for mouse (keyboard doesn't work). If I restart it works. If I plug in different keyboard/mouse via bluetooth it works but hub won't work until restart.

This is definitely a software issue and one I hope they know of and fix soon.

My M1 MBA crashes occasionally when plugging in to an external monitor. I’ve done fresh install, have all latest updates, did the Apple Silicon equivalent flashing pram, etc. Not sure if this is in combination with Bluetooth issues but that’s my next issue. Works great with AirPods but my Sennheiser bt headphones have to be re-paired occasionally. Last issue is some 3rd party software that’s not yet updated for Apple Silicon, but since last fresh install of macOS I decided that it’s a sign to find alternatives and have left those developers behind (so no more Rosetta2 on my machine). I would make an exception if the reason is complex, like I assume it is for Docker which is the exception I keep using but for now from different VMs. For others like Signal Desktop and Cyberduck, I just switched to alternatives. I prefer to use software from developers whom are on top of macOS and at this point I find offering Apple Silicon-native software is a good sign.

Oviously the crashing is terrible but overall I’m happy with M1, its awesome is greater than its current growing pains.

M1 Mac Mini 16GB RAM, BS 11.2.3
After forcing a few power downs for the unresponsive screen issue, the Apple bluetooth keyboard does not reconnect at boot. The keyboard itself is fine and charged and nothing makes it connect (such as pressing it's pairing button).

I had to connect a cabled keyboard and after I login with that, I then find also the bluetooth keyboard well connected.

I have found suggestions to reset the PRAM/SMC but AFAIK they do not apply to the M1s

You sure it's not the fault of the hub? What's the make of the hub?

I’m on an M1 Mini with a pro XDR. Switch Res is telling me I only have a million colors. But a benq connected via hdmi says billions of colors. I’m on the M1 switch Res version latest Mac OS beta. On my Intel MacBook Pro switch Res says the XDR is billions. I tried switching TB ports and even only had the XDR connected. I also went back to SWX 4.10.1 and it says the same thing.

I also do not have the reference modes dropdown for the XDR. Anyone have this too?

Sounds like a bug in SwitchResX. Have you contacted the developer?

Chrome is horrible and crashes all the time. "A page is unresponsive Wait/Kill Page" every time. Installed Beta, not sure if it's any better yet.

I am using Chrome (Version 89.0.4389.90 (Official Build) (x86_64)) as my sole browser and am not seeing any strange behaviours.

M1 Mac RAM and SSD Upgrades Found to Be Possible After Purchase

Technicians in China have reportedly succeeded in upgrading the memory and storage of the M1 chip, suggesting that Apple's integrated custom silicon for the Mac may be more flexible than previously thought.

new m1 chip

Reports of maintenance technicians being able to expand the memory and storage of ‌M1‌ Macs began circulating on Chinese social media over the weekend, but now international reports have started to clarify the situation.

Technicians in Guangzhou, China have discovered that it is possible to detach the RAM from the ‌M1‌ chip and its nearby SSD module and replace them with larger capacity components, which are correctly recognized by macOS, without breaking the device.

m1 chip upgrade ram

As proof, a large number of images showing the process of a base model ‌M1‌ MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage being upgraded to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and this change being correctly shown in macOS Big Sur, have been shared online.

The RAM and SSD components on Apple's ‌M1‌ Macs are soldered in place, making the procedure extremely challenging, and there is reportedly a high chance of failure. This invasive unofficial upgrade also undoubtedly breaches Apple's warranty.

Apple has made it increasingly challenging for users to upgrade their own Macs over the years, and it was thought that the ‌M1‌ Mac represented a final solidification of this move, with all of the ‌M1‌ Mac's computing components being heavily physically integrated. The possibility of upgrading the memory and storage of ‌M1‌ Macs, albeit in an invasive and risky procedure, therefore seems to be a significant discovery.

m1 chip upgrade ssd

Due to the difficulty of upgrading the RAM or SSD, almost all ‌M1‌ owners will likely still have to rely on the memory and storage configuration that they chose at the point of purchase, with upgrades being confined to a minority of enthusiasts, although it has been suggested that ‌M1‌ Mac memory and storage upgrades in Asia will be available through unofficial channels.

‌M1‌ Mac owners may be keen to see if the process behind these upgrades is refined over time and becomes a more viable option.

No, it will not.

Just live with it. The M1 is an entry-level platform and is not designed to be upgradable. If you think you'll need it, just spring for the 16GB if you can, and be done with it. Not sure if you need 16GB? Then you probably only need 8GB.

I was just reading the news when my screen turned purple for couple of seconds and it restarted itself.

Here is a case when the M1 Mac mini goes into hiccups and degrades a Zoom Call.

1. Use 2 displays (one wired to monitor you will use on desk, one on Airplay display to watch the Zoom call lesson)
2. Do a Zoom call.
3. Use Notes for jotting pointers from the Zoom call.
4. Take screenshots of Zoom call video.
5. Save screenshot into Notes (an awesome feature I love on the new Notes)
6. I think the Mac mini "syncs" for a second or two.
7. Zoom call goes into choppy mode, and you lose a second here or there of content.

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini9,1
Chip: Apple M1
Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
Memory: 8 GB
System Firmware Version: 6723.81.1
Storage: 512Gb
Ookla speedtest results confirm 1Gbps speed for download and upload
On Wifi and LAN connection

No usb c to display port or hdmi cable works reliably on MB Air, including one from Apple. Causes kernel panic when rebooted.

If monitor is plugged into OWC TB4 dock, same kernel panic happens when attaching MB Air to dock.

Mac Mini M1 (512/16) uses (I assume) incorrect monitor timings for my AOC I2279VWHE 1080p monitor resulting in slight ripples/shimmering lines in some solid-color areas. The effect is minimal and not immediately noticeable, but is distracting on some colors nonetheless. Was not a thing on MBP 2017 13" with an external adapter, here I'm using HDMI -HDMI directly (the same bug is present using the adapter).
Changes in environment don't affect this (EM interference, different rooms, different outlets).
No other HDMI source has this problem with the same monitor and cables (I've tried 3 HDMI cables and 2 power cables for the Mac itself).

Another thing: SwitchResX lists several 1280x720@60Hz resolutions, some of them marked with an exclamation mark. Choosing those eliminates the ripples entirely, which leads me to believe this is a GPU driver (or adjacent software-related) issue. Unfortunately, no such option is available for 1080p. Also, the ripples are still present when I choose 720p without the exclamation mark or just switch to 720p using System Preferences.

For anyone else who runs into this: adjusting brightness and contrast in the monitor settings does allow me to find a sweet spot that hides the ripples on 95% of the colors, so it's really a mild annoyance (you may also want to adjust the color profile, but that usually just shifts the issues to a different color).

A user script from GitHub and some IOReg searching shows that the OS is aware of alternative timings available for the monitor, yet there's no way to force them to be used, unfortunately.

This is distinct from the pink squares (had them once on login screen, but not again), HDMI wake (no problems with that, screen lights up in 2 seconds after my watch unlocks the Mac) and flickering in YouTube videos.
I haven't really seen this issue discussed before - this might be a subset of the "vertical lines" issue that manifests differently on my monitor's panel this way, but I am not sure.
The issue is absent from screenshots, so this is not a rendering issue either.
I'm fairly certain that a more expensive monitor could potentially solve this, but until I can be certain I won't run into color space issues, I won't pay for a new monitor.

Otherwise the Mac seems a lot faster than the MBP I traded in for it.

EDIT: seems like my initial assumption was wrong. Apparently the issue persists in the 720p mode selected from the System Preferences because this 720p mode is then internally upscaled to 1080p (my monitor receives a 1080p signal and doesn't blink when switching to this mode, indicating a lack of change in resolution, so I guess it's one of the "virtual" resolutions?). The (!) 720p modes from SwitchResX output a real 720p signal, which doesn't exhibit the shimmering issue. The timings don't seem to play a role because upon closer inspection they are identical for all of these modes.

EDIT 2: logged the issue with Apple support, will bring it in for repairs in about a month from now (or at least to have it looked at), can't do so at the moment, but at least I've got a support ticket number now.

Mine does that, except that unplugging/plugging in the hub takes care of it. Also M1 Mini.

Just got an M1 MBP 13 a few weeks ago, it's been fine software-wise but the lower part of the housing seems a tiny bit warped. It's not sitting completely flush on my desk and as I'm typing it's moving slightly.
No, it's not the desk, my older 15 MBP sits completely still.
Has anyone else noticed this?

FWIW, number 2 is solved. My Photo Stream is now working as a champ.

1 and 3 are non issues. Plus, SSD writes seem to be normal (at least so far).

Instead of waiting for a native PhotoShop I bought Pixelator Pro, it looks superb. Incredibly snappy.

EVEN HAPPIER. :)
What did you do, if anything, to fix Photo Stream? I have a new M1 Air and mine is not working. I've turned it on and off, rebooted etc. Similar to you, it is working on my other devices without issue. It is only the Air where photos are not showing up.

Thanks!
