I noticed something very strange after receiving my M1 Mac Mini. Normally I don't turn off my computers and I use sleep instead. I noticed that my M1 Mac Mini crashes while sleeping. Twice when I woke up I was welcomed by turned on monitor and page where I should enter my account password. After booting to macOS I was told that my Mac restarted due to some serious problem.
Am I alone with this? I must say that I've stopped using sleep mode because of that and I'm waiting for some macOS update to fix this problem.

TL;DR - sleep mode on my M1 Mac Mini is completely unusable right now. It should be okay when you're using it for short period of time, but you shouldn't do it when using sleep mode overnight.

That's strange, I had official Big Sur installed on my previous 2018 Intel Mac Mini and there wasn't any problems with sleep mode.

Had the same thing happen to my M1 Air when letting it sleep over night.

So this means that this is some serious and more widespread problem. Good to know.

This was an issue on the Intel Mac mini's before they patched it out. It looks like the bug is back - for at least the third time. Afaik, it's not really 'crashing' it's just the display output that fails to wake back up with the mini... I currently set my mini to not go to sleep until this is fixed. I'm unsure if this is also applicable to HDMI. I'm currently using usb C

It’s not the case because my Mini keeps crashing when I’m sleeping for example.

What makes you think it's crashing vs display port not waking up with it? The only reason I recognized the issue was because I've been using 2018 mini since its release. I set it to not go to sleep when display is off, it may be a temporary work around until apple sorts it out. And replugging the display out doesn't matter. It stays asleep until restart lol..

Because, as I told before - my Mini is crashing when I'm not using it. It's not crashing when I want to use it.
I can go to sleep, wake 8 hours later only to find out that my Mini is awake, monitor is active and my Mini has rebooted because of some kind of failure.

Ah I only read the title from the forum and got excited someone also had my current problem - apologies. It seems like the mini has multiple issues then...

Kernel panic?

Funny thing - I had 2018 Mac Mini with i3 and never had any problems with sleep on Mac. There's something wrong with sleep on M1 chip as someone earlier also reported the same behavior on MacBook Air.

This happened on my 2016 MBP with BS The other day. Hasn’t happened since, though. 🤔

Did you pull the log? I might be able to help.
If it's saved somewhere on Mac then I can check it. If I remember correctly then I just sent an error log to Apple, nothing more.

If the issue happens again, select the option to view the log, then copy it into a .rtf

I stopped using sleep because of this :p But I can try to use it again this night.

👍

This issue happened to a family member on an iMac, and it turned out to be caused by a defective GPU causing kernel panics during sleep, but never while running.

I'm interested in seeing the log.

I have had this problem to a lesser degree with Big Sur (all Betas) on my Intel MBP.
Same here on my 2015 i5 running both Big Sur Betas, and the official release. This happens more often when I menu select "sleep mode" as opposed to letting it fall asleep on its own. Of course I let the "crash report" go to Apple.

I've got a M1 MacMini ordered. I am disappointed that there are reports of the M1 having crashes like this.

I guess that this is more Big Sur problem than M1 problem... :/

Yes I had this many times per day with Catalina until they finally fixed it with the .5 version. Now its back on Big Sur!

And for my system, its a kernel panic. I was in contact with Apple that confirmed it was on their side and not a problem with my computer.

Interesting. Though I know that bad hardware can trigger kernel panics; silicon lottery, or just defective parts.

I have no sleep issue with my M1 mini. I'm running the latest beta
