I would go with MBP M1.
Much better display.
has both variants (and a few of them).

looks like you did not compare them in the right way. Exposure is different. So no real comparison.

every MBA does have red glow.
MBP don’t have it.
You say this, but my MBP had a very obvious red glow in the bottom right corner which was actually much more noticeable when compared to the very slight reddish glow on the right side of the screen of the MBA.

Hi all, what do you guys think, is my display on my M1 Air ok, or should i replace it?
I don't think you would gain anything in terms of red glow in blacks by replacing it.

I don't know if the display on the left side has a little too much magenta. Is this still ok, or above average?
Do you actually see magenta on the left side yourself, or just in camera images?
If not then just forget about it.

Red glow in MBA mostly shows in certain conditions but I agree for someone like me that is somewhat issue just knowing there is something wrong. But still I would not invest in MBP M1 at this point. It is pretty evident to me that there will be real Pro later this year, so I'd wait for that instead getting MBP M1 today. Or just get MBA M1 while waiting and then sell it, I bet it probably lose much less value during this than MBP M1.

You sure about that? Because if he waits , 9 months later another "better" MB will be released. Just out of interest what iPhone you waiting for next?

Yes I see a slight magenta tint on the left half of the screen, but only on white websites and especially with True Tone on. In photos or videos I don't see it.
I will keep the MacBook anyway, since I only paid 840€ new.

I have taken a new picture with my dslr. This is exactly how I see the magenta cast in a white image with 30% Brightness. Is that still okay? It's a bit annoying, I'm constantly looking at this magenta tint while browsing.

So you actually see this in everyday use too? If you browse this forum and look at the white sides between the text, you see left and right different hue? That is something I could not tolerate and my MBA M1 looks perfect in situations like that.
You have to decide whether you can tolerate this and also realize entering display lottery the result is never known beforehand. Considering the price you paid, it was a bargain and if you need to pay full price for another it is a tough choice.

Of course I don't have a crystal ball but to me it is obvious current MBP M1 is just a placeholder for real Pro coming soon. Too little different between M1 MBA vs MBP today.

Have you seen this?

Probably nothing for a long time. I had a nightmare finding a decent 12 Pro and I will keep it as long as it works unless some solid evidence to less lottery with the new models but still I will skip 2021 models at least.

Don't by a Hyundai, they bring out a new shape every 6 months now.

I see your point but I rather compare Apple to some traditional car brand which use the same shape for like 6 to 8 years with just small changes during that. So since current MB design has been around for quite some time there probably will be changes soon.

Anyway if one needs a notebook today and MBA M1 is not enough then MBP M1 is better choice and resale value is moot in case planning to keep it for long. But within year or so and in case rumors about new design MBP materializes then MBP M1 is likely taking a huge hit in resale value. Just like MBP Intels did, I was just selling my MBP 2019 around M1 introduction and its value dropped like a rock in one day and it was very hard to sell.

@0906742 I'm wondering if you changed during the warranty period? How long it was after the purchase date?

I have almost the same issue but on MBP M1 and I can see red area on the left side while using white backgrounds.

Serial number starts with C0
And the 5th sign is "7"

No, I did not do anything as this issue seemed to be common and no certainty that it would get any better by doing that. Also there is always risk to get other issues and since I had excellent uniformity on anything but 0% black and that would be only possible to see in dark environment with higher backlight setting, it did not see it worth the risk.

I have almost the same issue but on MBP M1 and I can see red area on the left side while using white backgrounds.
Actually even this is similar issue, I would consider it worse since I think you can see that issue often in normal use? I would not tolerate that in my unit if I could see in on say normal web pages, like www.google.com on full screen mode or such.

Anyway, what I would do in case like this, I'd rather just return and rebuy than go by the service replacement where you never know the outcome and once you do that you are on your own and no possibility to just return if you are still unhappy. Also as far as I know you probably cannot just demand them to replace the display, they will evaluate it and then decide if something is considered fault.

@0906742 thanks for the piece of advice.

What do you mean by return? To Apple? E.g. my return period is already passed.
And I'm thinking about trying a warranty replacement way or just selling the current one and buying a new one. If it's not covered by warranty, it's sad. I'll need to spend even more money in that case, which looks like not a very good option when I buy $2k+ laptop.

Also, I'm in a country where there is no official Apple stores, so it also might add some difficulties.

This issue does not hurt anything of my work, except my mental health :)

Yeah, that's what I meant. It would be the way I prefer to handle issues like this.

Those two are likely your only choices and it will be tough one to make.

I can totally see your point and issue like that would drive me crazy too. :)
Issue with the red glow in only black screen in a dark room is barely something I can tolerate and long as I don't see it in day to day use in normal lights (which I don't as brighter screens are perfect in my MBA).

Yeah, I definitely a dark-theme guy, but some things are should still be white.

I guess my decision is to get a new one in the official apple store and check. In case of success, I just will sell the current one.

So many expectations from the new mini-led.

Hope your mental health will not decrease due to it, @0906742 :)

Sounds about the same I would do in that case. Then you can at least be sure you have good machine in your hands (if you happen to get one) and then just try to sell old one within time you still have possible to return your new one so that you don't end up having two machines in your hands.

So many expectations from the new mini-led.

I sure it will decrease. :D
That's why I try to postpone my next purchase since I finally have variety of machines in my hands with good displays here. :)

What about my M1 Air screen? Does it look normal/acceptable to you?

No, looks too reddish IMO. If this is not the macOS transparency effect distortion, then it is not acceptable for me. Please, try to reduce transparency effect in System Preferences -> Accessibility, or try different wallpaper, just in case.

Here it is, with reduced transparency. Apart from reddish glow, do you see any major back light bleeds?

Here is mine. Not too much different from yours, or maybe a little. My advice - do not try to get the monitor to its limits. If you are happy with everyday use of your MBA, just keep it else return it to the seller.

EDIT: honestly, the image on my MBA was not too reddish as it seems on my photo - it is somewhat more the camera effect than the monitor defect. Photo taken with my iPhone XR.

EDIT2: about you asking for bleeding - yes, after I saw your annotated photo on another thread, I can see now a minor bleeding. Quite normal I would say. Do you see it when brightness is normal and on everyday basis?

Mine isn't reddish either in real life, photo taken with iPhone 12, re the bleeding - I can only see it on entirely black background with 100% brightness on in dark environment.

Then there is nothing to worry about. It is an entry level computer, and the quality is the best for its price. And I can assure you the MBA screen is better than LG 27UL850-W, for example, which has terrible red and blue colours.

I have the SAME issue, brand new MacBook Air m1 and while browsing on WHITE pages I see reddish effect on the left side of my display, and a blue to dark effect on the other side. SO SO annoying. And I feel like a have migrene.

MENTION: I also have a MacBook Air 2020 i3 model, and the display is perfect, 100% same color on the display.

Please tell me, there is a solution, or I have to return the MBA?

Pretty sure that all of the M1 MacBook Airs have that to one extent or another. On mine you can only really see it in pitch black room with a black screen with the backlight very high.

Swap the displays over. Is that possible?
