This issue isn't new, nor is it relegated to the new M1 Macs. Been having the same exact problem on an 2012 Mac Mini (though not consistently) and now that I've just upgraded to the latest M1 Mac Mini, I'm still experiencing it.

Working around this by powering on the monitor first before the Mac. Annoying.. but I suspect it's a DP compatibility issue
I came from a 2017 Intel MacBook Pro before my M1 MacBook Air, and a whole host of Intel MacBooks prior to that. Although things weren't always perfect, there was never a consistent and reproducible issue like this with the M1 Macs.

I'm very happy with performance of the M1 in general (other than the Preview app crashing frequently which was not an issue before), but waking up to start work and forgetting that there is a "startup procedure" to getting your gear working can ruin your morning.

Happened again this morning running Big Sur 11.5.1 I had to force a power off and restart to get the M1 mac mini to see the monitor.
My M1 Air has started doing it since 11.5, "fix" has just been pulling out my Thunderbolt dock and putting it back in again. Assume yanking the display out and in doesn't work?

I've experienced no change with 11.5.1 - still have to do the "sequence" to get things working. It's become a part of my workflow. How sad.

Yanking the display cable in and out = instant pink screen, kernel panic, and restart.

Every 2-3 mornings my Mac has 'forgotten' my monitor and requires a restart.

I've got the shipping box from Apple to return my Macbook for service.

However, reading that one forum user has swapped 4 Mac Minis and got no improvement, it seems pointless?

I'm leaning towards soldiering on and selling/exchanging for the 16" M2 whenever it comes out.

This issue is resolved in macOS 12
Which issue? There have been so many…

My two issues were the screen turning yellow tint when connected to external monitor. Also it wouldn’t keep the resolution when coming back to the machine on the external monitor.

The Yellow tint is because of the don’t remember the function now. It’s in macOS display settings.

resoltution thing is resolved

IT’s called True Tone. Turn that off and it I’ll get better when you have external display
We’re not talking about the same thing. There was an issue with M1 and external displays where the whole screen would go yellow upon waking from sleep or monitor off situations with external monitors via adapters. It’s not a True Tone issue, it was an external display issue with the M1.

The fix was to never have the M1 sleep or turn off the external monitor but to use a screensaver instead.

Got the MBP 13” m1 with macos 12 and I don’t have this issue

I spoke to a Genius in the Apple Store today, who seemed more knowledgeable than most.

My issue is that my M1 Macbook Pro sometimes 'forgets' my 4K monitor on wake.

When I unplug and replug the monitor, it hangs for a few seconds, then kernel panics (pink screen) and restarts.

He said this sounds very much like a software level error, rather than hardware.

He thinks it's likely to get ironed out in an update - although conceded that this might not be soon, given that it affects a small number of users.

So, I don't think I'll gain anything by sending my Macbook away for 'repair'.

Two restarts a week is annoying, but I can survive.

And I'll likely sell up and buy a 16-inch Apple Silicon model when they're released.

I did have this issue with Big Sur but when I did update to macOS 12 the issue are gone,

I have the mbp m1

Great. That's the Beta, obviously?

Excellent news.

How's the Beta running in general?
Beta has been trouble free for me so far. It is a little early for me to jump on a Beta of MacOS but I wanted access to the new MacOS guest virtualization. Surprisingly stable (well not the MacOS VM but everything else).

It use too be true for me also but this time I went for the beta because Big Sur was a pain in the ass for me that has the m1.

Just an update on my own struggles with this issue as I have been trying to work around it by turning on the monitor first before waking my Mac Mini (occasionally still required a reboot which was frustrating).

I've since disabled the "auto select [source]" feature of my monitor and the problem seems to have gone away. It's been almost a month now and I've yet to see the problem come back *touch wood*

I use my monitor with multiple devices connected and this was on by default. The Mini no longer fails to wake the display now but I do have to manually set it to the correct source if it happens to be on another input when last used but at least the display would come on every time.

The MacOS Beta hasn't solved your monitor issues?
I mean yes if it's related that I have to turn off my monitor and on again whenever I fresh start my mac pro. Otherwise; I have to unplug the usb-c cable in order to get video signal.
