Observations (using a M1 MacBook Air):

"Setup Sequence"
External displays only work over HDMI (adapter or hub) if you follow this sequence (1) connect the external display (at this point the display is recognised but stays black); (2) enter sleep on the Mac and wait for the external display to enter sleep mode; (3) first manually wake the external display with external display power button; (4) once the display is awake press any key to wake the MacBook.

"Sleep Cycle Sequence"
Once you've completed the Setup Sequence, if the MacBook enters sleep mode with the display connected, it is not necessary to unplug the display simply (1) first manually wake the external display with with external display power button; and (2) once the display is awake press any key to wake the MacBook.

If you accidentally wake the MacBook first (ie: if you screw up the Sleep Cycle Sequence), you will need to repeat the Setup Sequence to get things back in order.

I've tested these sequences with the MacBook open and also in clamshell mode using a HyperDrive hub with HDMI and a Dell USB-C dock with HDMI. Precisely the same results on both. I've also tested this using a Samsung 4K display and also with a Dell FHD display.

My experience with screwing up the Sleep Cycle Sequence is that either (i) the display stays black and is recognised by the MacBook in system preferences and it is clear that a desktop is created for the display (you just can't see it); or (ii) same as one except the external display is entirely green; or (iii) the external display is not recognised at all (this is most rare).
In fact, if you screw up the Sleep Cycle Sequence you don't need to repeat the Setup Sequence. Just repeat the Sleep Cycle Sequence and you should be good to go.

Another quick work around which I have found works for me when the monitor displays a cropped view, or worse screen is showing in all purple -

Pre Setup
1. Create a keyboard short cut to launch settings - just makes life easier as need to use it often. (Maybe someone can tell me how to launch a shortcut to auto change screen orientation then it would all be even faster!)
2. Increase the size of mouse pointer (this is necessary for me as using a 50" Samsung and finding the mouse when screen is purple haze can be difficult.

When problem occurs.
1. Launch settings using keyboard shortcut
2. Open Display settings
3. Change orientation 90 Degrees. (this seems to reset the bad image and crop size)
4. Return to original orientation.

This all takes about 10 seconds. and avoids removing cables, reboots, etc. etc.

I hope that this is resolved with a patch soon...

I'm seeing the same thing with an MBP M1 and an LG 27UL850-W 4k monitor connected via USB-C. I'm using scaled resolution on the LG. When the computer is asleep only briefly and I wake it, it forgets the monitor's resolution. I have to choose a higher resolution setting, and then go to the one that I typically use for everyday work. On the other hand, when the computer is asleep for a longer time, it remembers the resolution setting. The sleep mode seems to affect the behavior. I have upgreaded to Big Sur 11.1 and no improvement.
I have the same problem that it does not remember the scaled settings. and reverts back to the default for display settings. However someone later has posted that by turning monitor on first, then waking computer, that works for them. I am going to try that too. The way that I am resolving is :

I have an LG UL600 and this is exactly my problem too. I've tried multiple adapters and HDMI and DisplayPort, it happens no matter what. As soon as the computer goes to sleep or even turning off the monitor after a few minutes of no use, when I go back to the machine the resolution seems to be scaling it back to default with blown up proportional windows.

I can either go to settings to change to a different resoltuon, then back to the scaled one I want. I've also found opening the lid and closing it again will set the display back to the scaled resolution I set.

Seems like a software issue in MacOS that they should be able to fix easily. I hope they're aware of this but I guess I need to open a ticket with Apple support.

EDIT - Not really a permanent solution but I can also set the computer to never go to sleep and to never turn off the display and everything will stay scaled as intended. Maybe I'll just go this route now with a screensaver.

Apple have just released a new update that may help some of us.

Yes, 11.2 did not help us with the changing of screen resolutions from sleep or idle.

same issue here with my new M1 Air. Today I tried swopping out my USBc docking port for other models, 2 had the same issue until tried my last one and the issue is gone. 4K Samsung monitor jumps to life an instance after a mouse click (Air closed and in sleep mode). My guess is that most usb c docking ports on Amazon are not 100% compatible with the M1 as they don't have enough power going out either to the HDMI port or to the notebook. I now use the one I had for my Microsoft Surface notebook, from "Letscom".

My temporary fix for now...

I went to settings for when the laptop is plugged in (not on battery) and set the screen to "never turn off". I then added a screensaver after 5 minutes. At least now when I go back to my laptop the resolution doesn't change. The trade off is my monitor stays on now when not in use but that's really just consuming some extra energy. I guess I'll use it this way until they fix this issue.

hi there, I don't think its the MacBooks, try swopping out your usb dock for one that passes through more power. Mine works 100% now. cheers

I've tried a Caldigit Soho, official AV Adapter, and a HDMI only dongle off Amazon...none of them worked and they all reverted the screen resolution back after sleeping or when the monitor automatically turned off.

You shouldn't need a special adapter to be able to keep the screen resolution from sleeping/waking. All of these adapters work just fine displaying whatever custom resolution. It's a software issue where the M1 doesn't recognize to maintain external output resolution when sleeping/turning off monitor.

what a weird issue....I did not face any trouble with the screen resolution. Just like most folks in this thread - once in sleep mode, my M1 would only wake my monitor when I opened it / or pulled and re-inserted my usb c dock connection. I am just thankful that my issue is solved with the different hub. Good luck

I am able to figure out exactly when the Yellow-gate issue happens.
I am using Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and LG- 24UD58-B.
As i previously mentioned I got adapter replaced from Apple but the issue still persists.

Steps to reproduce.
-Connect M1 MBA to external HDMI display using AV adapter.
-Go to Preferences > Battery > Power Adapter and enable “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off
-Let the “display” go to sleep.
-Waking up results in a dark yellowish tint. Sometimes display does not wake from sleep at all.

Note: This issue will not happen if Macbook goes to full sleep. It only happens when you wake it from "display sleep".

100% the exact issue I have. I have the same adapter with an LG 4K monitor. I have my system set not to sleep.

So are you saying if you let your machine "sleep" you don't get this issue upon waking?

I have also prevented this issue but setting it not to sleep, setting the monitor to never turn off, but then adding a screensaver. Obviously the trade off is that your monitor is on 100% of the time either while in use or with a screensaver active.

- MacBook Pro M1
- MacOS Big Sur 11.2.1
- LG Ultrafine 5K via USB-C

After sleep, no image on the external monitor. Everything else is normal for the computer : my laptop integrated monitor is seen as a secondary monitor, I'm able to drag windows towards the LG, Alfred seems to be activated on the LG, but I can’t see anything. So the Mac works like if the monitor was displaying everything, but there is no image on the screen.
Charging of the computer via the monitor works.

Only way to get an image is to restart the computer :(

I have 2 LG monitors. I've noticed the monitor "crashes". I need to "restart" the monitor, by unplugging the power. Then everything works again.

See the steps I've outlined on the previous page.

First, put your MacBook Pro to sleep; then wake the monitor only using its physical power button; and only then wake your MacBook Pro using your keyboard. That should work reliably.

Thanks for finding this! I've been having this same issue with an LG-27UD58-B and an Anker hub. It's good to know it happens with the Apple adapter too, hopefully this can be fixed by Apple.

I want to add that this happens to me even when "Prevent computer[...]" is disabled, on macOS 11.2.2. Doesn't seem to happen as often as it used to, but it still happens every once in a while.

Did 11.2.2 fix the yellow tint when waking up screen?

Did it fix the resolution issues of resizing the external display scaling when waking?

I can confirm that 11.2.2 has not fixed the wake from sleep/black display issue.
I am in the same boat. The day 11.2.2 was released i updated and for that day, my screen woke up even after two hours. Now, if the display sleeps after ten minutes, external monitor does not wake up.
