Same issue here with my brand new mac mini m1 and a ultrawide LG 35WN75C-B connected via USB-C:
1) I don't have video signal after sleep and sometimes at the boot (unplug-plug fix). Very frustating
2) the LG app onscreen control does not recognize the monitor (while it has been working on a Intel mac).

After the end of my configuration, I will try another USB C cable or an adapter or a HDMI cable.

1 I try a Anker doc, no picture after sleep mode at all, reboot/re connect needed.
2 Choetech usb c to display port, same issue as that anker doc really bad.
3 the Apple AV-multipoort-adapter is returned cause I had to much yellow screens after a wakeup.
50% had te re-sleep/wakeup to get a normal picture. it was working good enough for a while but I need the m1 connected to a display port to free the 60Hz hdmi for my ps5
4 Last but not least Algebra usb c to display port, and this one works for the best, no more yellow screens, waking up is working pretty good, sometimes and after a deep sleep I have to lift the MacBook Air to wake up the screen.
Happy with this cheap solution (20,-) now waiting for some doc's that work with m1/big sur that are not 200,- ore above.

I have this issue.

I have the M1 MacBook Air and a Viotek SUW49DA. This display is 5120x1440 at 120HZ. The cable I am using is a high quality USB C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable.

Originally it worked amazingly well. The full resolution appeared, and it even gave me the option to run it as 120hz with no artifacts or other issues. Yay!

That was this morning though, and since then I have been on the phone with Apple Support. The person I spoke to was aware of these issues and they they are software and not hardware. I tried for about 30 min to get it to work to no avail, but suddenly it is working again.

Very annoying! I do not want to have to deal with these sorts of issues on my $1,500+ computer! Whatever happened to the "it just works" I once knew?

I get this yellow tinted screen with the Apple av adapter and en external monitor after letting the machine sit for awhile.

Hmm yeah I guessed maybe it’s the adapter but I need USB A as well.

I guess I need to find a usb c hub with 4K 60fps hdr output...

u gotta remember this M1 is very new on the Mac so issues this like are expected. 1st gen will have teething problems.

I also have all the issues being described here.

I may have found a work around. If I manually power on my display (by pushing the power button) before waking the M1 MBP from sleep, the display comes on reliably. If I let the M1 MBP wake the display - it rarely works correctly without issues.

Can anyone else try to see if it helps?

Yeah, I do the same 😅 It usually works.

I also spotted another "interesting" issue. I thought that maybe if I turn on Amphetamine right a way after the wake up, this will prevent the "rage sleep" on M1, but it immediately turned itself off instead. Thoughts? Anyone?🤔

I tried a USB C to HDMI dongle I forgot I had laying around from Amazon (not Apple brand) and so far it's not giving the issue. I think the problem is the official Apple AV adapter and how it's working with the system software on the M1.
Update: I got USB-C Digital AV Multi-port Adapter replaced by Apple but the problem still persists so I guess It has compatibility issues with M1.

I'm probably just going to return it and try to find another USB C hub or something. It's annoying because the options are very limited to have HDMI output (with 4k/60fps + HDR if wanted) plus Power Input ability.

Right now I'm using the Apple adapter with power in + usb hub connected for keyboard/mouse and then using the 2nd usb c port on the MacBook with another hdmi adpater I have and that one is working just fine.

I initially had some issues with sleep/resume and external monitor (Samsung 27" 4k)
Either the monitor wouldn't come on/ take too long or worse, internal display would exhibit scaling issue.
The hub in question was a Apple Multiport Adapter (A2119)

I swapped out the display connection with a Uni C -HDMI occupying a dedicated port - This reduced the occurrence but did not completely eliminate it.

On a whim, I changed the HDMI cable from Apple Multiport Adapter to monitor and that seems to have eliminated the problem completely or at least it hasn't occurred in the 4-5 days (and 5-6 sleep / resume cycles/ day) since I made the change.

The old cable was a blue rigger but old and possibly working suboptimally/ the new cable is a relatively recent amazon basics

I'm on Big Sur 11.2 RC and things seem to get better. I'm getting a lot less issues with waking up and switching to the clamshell mode. So I guess we're getting somewhere 🤞🏻

Macbook Air M1 <- USB C -> LG UK850 27"

I'm having an issue where upon waking up, my MBA is not keeping the external monitor resolution. It always wake up with some bigger resolution and I have to reset it back to proper resolution.

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, after only ONE DAY, everything came back to that buggy state... I've started experience these issues every time I wake up the mac... So... it hasn't been fixed 😖

M1 MBA here. Tried both a HyperDrive USB-C multi-port hub for HDMI and a direct USB-C to Display Port adapter using different displays of differing resolutions (4K Samsung and HD Dell). Have reset all the things (P-RAM etc) many times.

At times the Samsung “knows” that it is connected. The backlight comes on but the display stays black. The MBA also recognizes the display (I can access arrangement settings etc in System Preferences).

Other times the display seems unaware but the MBA letterboxes it’s own display.

More rarely, the devices simply ignore each other when connected.

Super frustrating.

How are you clearing pram, M1 don’t have those?

Very disappointed to hear that 11.2 RC hasn't fixed this. I'm on an M1 MBA with the Apple Multiport Adapter and a 27" Benq display connected via HDMI at least 2 or 3 times a day I have to mess around with things trying to get the display to wake up... unplug / plug... etc. Just unplugging the HDMI cord from the adapter doesn't seem to do anything. I always have to unplug the entire adapter. Which I hate doing because it has an External HDD also attached to it.

I have the same frustration with the HDD. Very poor form Apple.

I had the same issue that started when I used an external keyboard through a LENTION adapter I borrowed off a friend. My Dell ultra wide is plugged directly into the thunderbolt 3 and is not going through the adapter which is in the second slot. However, removing the adapter and plugging back in brings back the display. I've changed the battery settings now so it happens less often.

I've had fairly consistent results over the last two days with waking the monitor using its power button before waking the MacBook (using the MacBook in clamshell mode). No need to re-plug-in the HUB.

Observations (using a M1 MacBook Air):

"Setup Sequence"
External displays only work over HDMI (adapter or hub) if you follow this sequence (1) connect the external display (at this point the display is recognised but stays black); (2) enter sleep on the Mac and wait for the external display to enter sleep mode; (3) first manually wake the external display with external display power button; (4) once the display is awake press any key to wake the MacBook.

"Sleep Cycle Sequence"
Once you've completed the Setup Sequence, if the MacBook enters sleep mode with the display connected, it is not necessary to unplug the display simply (1) first manually wake the external display with with external display power button; and (2) once the display is awake press any key to wake the MacBook.

If you accidentally wake the MacBook first (ie: if you screw up the Sleep Cycle Sequence), you will need to repeat the Setup Sequence to get things back in order.

I've tested these sequences with the MacBook open and also in clamshell mode using a HyperDrive hub with HDMI and a Dell USB-C dock with HDMI. Precisely the same results on both. I've also tested this using a Samsung 4K display and also with a Dell FHD display.

My experience with screwing up the Sleep Cycle Sequence is that either (i) the display stays black and is recognised by the MacBook in system preferences and it is clear that a desktop is created for the display (you just can't see it); or (ii) same as one except the external display is entirely green; or (iii) the external display is not recognised at all (this is most rare).
