Still hard to believe there's HDMI display issues in 2020. I've had intermittent issues with multiple MacBooks over the years.

Anyone seeing an improvement with today's Big Sure update (11.1)?

So far, I've had my MBA go to sleep a handful of times, and my monitor (connected via HDMI) has woken up just fine each time. Possibly fixed, but I don't want to jinx it!

I also have problems with the M1 "forgetting" what resolution my external monitor is.
Latest is Apple Support asked me if I have a custom background image, and I do, so they asked me to remove the custom background image and use one of the default Big Sir background images. I'm trying that now, but just wanted to shout out in case there's a trend.
I'm seeing the same thing with an MBP M1 and an LG 27UL850-W 4k monitor connected via USB-C. I'm using scaled resolution on the LG. When the computer is asleep only briefly and I wake it, it forgets the monitor's resolution. I have to choose a higher resolution setting, and then go to the one that I typically use for everyday work. On the other hand, when the computer is asleep for a longer time, it remembers the resolution setting. The sleep mode seems to affect the behavior. I have upgreaded to Big Sur 11.1 and no improvement.

I got exactly what you described - from sleep, I'll need to change it from "Default" to "Scaled", and then from 4K to the next (3008x1692) res I want. My monitor is a BenQ SW271. MBP M1, 16G, 1T. I got this both from a direct MBP USB-C connection and via Anker Thunderbolt 3 dock.

I turned off sleep mode when power is present. No longer having issue described. I have 32 us LG display and Mbpro13 m1 with latest OS.

Just wanted to update people on where I'm at. Apple has "captured" my machine (replaced it) and I no longer have problems. Two other changes that might make a difference, I no longer use a custom desktop picture, and I updated to 11.1. Still think it could be a hardware problem, but it's all good with the new machine (4 days without a glitch).

This isn't an M1 problem.

I have the exact same issue with my 2020 Intel MBP 13.

Its a Big Sur problem and incredibly frustrating.

Anyone found any good solutions yet? I have to take in and out the cable at least 15-20 times before external monitor works again. I have a MBP M1 and a Samsung Odyssey 49".

My solution was a USB-C dock. I was only having trouble with Display Port though; HDMI was waking from sleep without too many glitches. The Caldigit SOHO dock fixed my problems with waking up using DP.

I know the Mac mini issue is specific to the M1 version. I have two monitors both were connected to my Intel Mac mini 2018 via USB-C adapters. They worked flawlessly for over 2 years. I upgraded that mini to Big Sur, and while it did experience several Big Sur issues, the monitors always woke up without any issues. As soon as a got my M1 mini, I had to connect my primary monitor with HDMI because the M1s don't support 2 USB-C monitors, but my secondary display (same monitor, cables and adapter) will randomly fail to wake up after a while. I tried everything mentioned here and the only way to wake it back up is a reboot. Apple replaced my first M1 mini also, claiming they thought it was a hardware issue, but the replacement does it as well. Hopefully a future OS update will address the issue.

Same problem here with my MacBook Air M1 and samsung 4K monitor.
Try that Anker doc with a hdmi cable to my monitor, result is most of the time not waking up and a reboot with a cable re connect is needed, mostly more than one's.
After that I used a apple multiview adapter (latest ver) and it's much better, the display is faster giving a picture.
I also try a usb c --> DisplayPort cable (so to free that hdmi 60Hz port I need that one for my PS5 someday the 2th hdmi is 30 Hz so not really useful)
Result is the same as with that Anker doc not really good waking up.
So iam stuck with the apple doc and the only 60 Hz hdmi port taken by this M1 not what I had in mind.
Just to try I ordered another usb-c 2 DP cable and hoping it's working this time.
The question stands, is this a M1 problem, maby a Big Sur bug? cause I'm reading about the same issues there,

I've been experiencing similar issue with the M1 MBP and a Lenovo Q24h-10 display. What worked for me was to check "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" under System Preferences >> Battery >> Power Adapter.

(Sidebar: I also have a Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 dock in between the laptop and monitor, not sure yet how that affects sleep/wake from sleep issues.)

I realize this likely means sucking more power when plugged in and docked with the monitor, and isn't the most optimum solution, but compared to the 2009 iMac I used to have, I think I'm doing ok..

Since I'm using a 49" screen, I have to use a Thunderbolt / USB C to Displayport cable to get the full resolution (5120 x 1440), the HDMI cable only gives me 3840 x 1080. Still have trouble when waking up my MPB M1 and also when reconnecting to the screen. Extremely frustrating. Works smoothly when using a Mac with Intel processor.

This has worked for me as well (again running a 2020 Intel Macbook Pro 13). So the issue seems to be something happening between sleep and waking up where the thunderbolt connection is lost. If the laptop doesn't go to sleep the connection is solid. I still remain convinced its a software issue in Big Sur.

Hey guys, been trying to figure out a similar issue that sounds like it's related, but I have a new MBA with the M1 chip, and I can get the external monitor to work fine when using a kensington docking station, set it up as mirror mode, but when I close the lid of the mba the display goes dark and doesn't work the way it worked with my other MBA. I've looked at all the settings that normally affect this type of thing, but it seems like perhaps this is the similar issue.

Anyone notice this problem?

I've got a MBA M1 and my external monitor screen turns yellow at some point during the day or night. Unplugging everything and replugging the HDMI back in seems to reset it. Is it some issue with night mode or something?

Which adapter and monitor you are using?

I am also having the exact same issue ie: screen turns yellow with M1 MBA and Apple USB-C Digital AV Multi-port Adapter. I can't seem to diagnose if it's cable, dongle or M1 issue. The issue only happens if I wake it in the middle of the sleep process. ie: waking it just after the display goes blank. If I wake form a complete sleep the issue does not seem to occur.

Apple USB-C Digital AV Multi-port Adapter
Same adapter...the official Apple one...Apple USB-C Digital AV Multi-port Adapter

Unplugging the adapter and hdmi cables then reseating them fixes the issue once I wake the machine.

I have this problem also with my new M1 Mac Mini and the XDR display. If I pull the TB cable and reinsert it the display comes on. That is little bit of a pain so I mostly just let the mini run with the screen off.

I just installed the new Big Sur Beta - I am going let the Mini sleep and see if there has been any improvement.

Unfortunately, just updated my M1 Air to Big Sur 11.2 beta 2 and all these display issues are still there ;-(

I have tried same adapter with 2017 MBP and it seems to work fine.
There is another person on reddit having the same issue.

I tried a USB C to HDMI dongle I forgot I had laying around from Amazon (not Apple brand) and so far it's not giving the issue. I think the problem is the official Apple AV adapter and how it's working with the system software on the M1.
