I find that these cameras look better and acceptable with proper lighting. Try to use the camera during the day or on a well lit environment. If you expect these cameras to perform as a good as a iPad front face or iPhone you will be surely disappointed, these cameras are trash under dark lit environments. My LG V60 front face camera is 10x better. Honestly the BAR WAS PRETTY LOW to begin with so it's no wonder people are praising these cameras.

I love how this thread has zero photographic evidence (either way)
Wax Max Yuryev from Max Tech looks pretty waxy here:

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. There is indeed a skin filter built into the webcam and you cannot disable it.
If you hate it that much, return the machine for people who don't mind it or buy a dedicated webcam / mirrorless camera and use as a webcam.
So why have a notch if i need my own camera what a waste not acceptable for a £3300 machine

Thanks for this thread.
I’ve watched countless reviews of these new macs and I have always been surprised by the webcam reviews. They all (including Max tech, shown above) praise how much better it is compared to the previous ones while displaying examples that showed the opposite with a very waxy rendering.

To me it feels like the reviewers felt for the old megapixel specs marketing trick.
They’ve been explaining us for years that the MacBook webcams sucked because they were 720p and that they should be 1080p. Now that they are 1080p they had to say that they were now much better even though that’s not the case.

The new one is okay in good lighting. Not good in poor lighting. The software tries to enhance on the poorly lit image. It's camera 101.

I think the reviewers were excited about the new webcam because it's finally 1080P. And the previous ones were really trash.

I see there is an app that supposed to allow adjustment to the webcam settings.

Has anyone tried it?

I'm not sure what the issue is and if its software related or not. I have an iMac Pro and a 14" MacBook Pro and the image produced on the iMac Pro is much better than the Macbook. I always thought the iMac Pro produced good image quality and figured the MBP would be better but to me it looks a little blurrier.

Yeah it’s so bad and to think we have the notch because of this web cam I thought it would of been epic but it’s usless

Have to agree here. Its definitely not as good as I thought it would be. I think its a minor improvement over the Intel models but not a drastic change over what we had before like I think everyone was expecting.

I agree. It's marginally ok in very bright light. In anything else it's straight up bad. I hate all this smoothing that Apple has implemented - I'll take grain all day every day instead. My 2019 iMac looks miles better. I know my 2018 iPad is much thicker, allowing for a better camera, but it looks orders of magnitude better. The main complaint I have is that the camera on these new MBP's is only marginally acceptable for professional video conferencing, even just among colleagues. The cameras in many competing laptops may only be 720p, and look bad in their own way - but most of them are better than this processed image.

I hate these replies why would I return my Mac because of that, it suck’s yeah but I brought it for my work flow but I can still be honest and say this is a joke
Because you sounds like your entire career is based on that webcam.
You should buy another $3,000 laptop and get a better webcam if you hate the notch and the skin filter.
Many people in my company love the new webcam and they don’t even care about the skin filter. As I replied, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and I’m also being honest about it.

Exactly. Who cares that much? It's a tiny little camera on a computer. We are not shooting a movie with it. Lol.

Currently, I have MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max as well as a temporary MacBook Pro 16" Intel model and a MacBook Air M1:

  • MacBook Air M1 is slightly ahead of MAcBook Pro 16" Intel,
  • MacBook Pro M1 Max is significantly better than both (it is not even comparable to the Intel model)
  • iPad Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are significantly better than MacBook Pro M1 Max (obviously as they have a much thicker housing for the camera module)
I do agree that the beauty filter is a little annoying though (perhaps it could be tweaked by future software updates); however, as long as one does not expect the quality of a flagship phone or tablet, the camera is quite good, much better than any laptop I have reviewed so far.

If the camera is deficient in design, and even worse in some cases than the older ones, as many are reporting, then Apple needs to fix it, either by improving the hardware or allowing users greater control over it.

Responses that are tantamount to “Well, if you don't like it, stop complaining and just return it” are insensitive and tone deaf. They’ve like the “Love it or leave it” remarks that were once hurled at people who criticized their country's government policies. We want to point out flaws, alert others, and try to nudge the powers that be to make things better!

I have the MacBook Pro 16" m1 max and I love it but the webcam is so bad even now being 1080p its worse than my old intel model, its like it has a beauty smoothing filter on by default and can't disable it, in meetings I have the worse quality camera, no way its 1080p it looks like 380p anyone else seeing this
Maybe it was the software, maybe the connection speed. Check it with Photo Booth app. MacBook Pro 14/16" si very good, consider it is a webcam not a 4K camera. Light is very important.

I've checked some of you past messages and in everyone you are exaggerating, always blaming Apple and also you are completely clueless most of time and destructive all the time. I suppose you get paid for trolling / spreading FUD, otherwise there are better hobbies, really.
