I've checked some of you past messages and in everyone you are exaggerating, always blaming Apple and also you are completely clueless most of time and destructive all the time. I suppose you get paid for trolling / spreading FUD, otherwise there are better hobbies, really.
Nice to know you like stalking other members but yea I love apple and I also have a right to call out things that are not good I have every right to call out the camera quality

yeah he just likes to complain, I looked at his posting too. I think he is just trolling for the hell of it. there is a fine art to it, however usually involves creating multiple accounts. Some of his posts are funny as hell from the trolling point of view, but he lacks creativity in the posts.

There are some people that just do it for attention or you can never make them happy. I bet if apple made bottle water, he would complain that water is too wet.

Who you calling a troll, to be honest I don’t need approval from strangers but it’s my concern with a product I spent a lot of money with and like half of the replies here people agree with me, I guess the ones that keep having a go are the ones that can’t afford it

I hate these replies why would I return my Mac because of that, it suck’s yeah but I brought it for my work flow but I can still be honest and say this is a joke
Well it's not a joke & if you need a quick fix buy an iPad Pro because it's thicker & can house a better cam system for what you are here stating a £3300 pro laptop with thin bezels is lacking. You can always buy a 3rd party webcam being that laptop integrated webcam usually suck in poor lighting. I can honestly say you don't care about finding a solution to your current situation.

Have you used it in person?!? Do you even have one? Also there are loads of Reddit posts about this to so I’m not alone, the quality is terrible and grainy like a beauty filter is on
I have the M1 iMac and it's basically the same camera if I'm not mistaken.
Of course it's not 4K, it's not as good as the iPhone, etc. but for a built-in cam, it's absolutely phenomenal.

There has to be something wrong. Could you post a screenshot comparing your old webcam and your new one ?

I don’t come to this forum to get spoken down to, for the people that agree with me thanks for being honest and yes I might come across moaning at posts but that’s because I don’t come here to say what I love but I will talk about my issues, everyone that has one can understand what I’m saying now apart from that I love the machine and the the notch, but in an era that we have a lot of online video calls it would be nice to have a good camera now I think it would be better without the beauty sharpening effect added into it but don’t @ me with calling me a troll or any of that, you do you and I’ll do me, I’m out this forum has to many sensitive people on it

The M1 iMac has a 1080p, which I have seen in person and is an unbelievably crystal clear camera - unlike any other Mac I've put my hands on before (including iMac Pro).
I would take a wild guess and say that the iMac camera module is probably the same with the 16" M1 MacBook Pro (both 1080p for starters). One would believe that either something is wrong with your hardware or internet connection or software. If I get a chance to work on a 16" M1 soon, I will able to confirm. Try working in a different location (different ISP) and try wiping the system with a fresh OS and see if the issue is there before restoring any backup. Cheers.

Totally agree with OP. There is an completely unacceptable level of noise reduction going on my 16" MAX and it looks much worse than my 2017 MacBook Pro. There's no contrast, skin looks plasticky, focus looks soft, and there's dancing pixels everywhere. The most recent iPad Pro has a much better webcam.

At first, I had this impression too
But I just got out of a meeting with some collegues and oh boy! Their video feeds looks like crap compared to mine
Someone even made the reflection!

PhotoBooth is crap, but in WebEx the quality is very good

This.

Real world performance is really good compare to other laptops. Honestly, I doubt that people will notice it at all.
People are more worried about the content of the meeting than poking at your webcam quality.

This is probably true. Someone said to me "you look younger!" which might have been a euphemism for waxy. Like botox.

I suspect the webcam is compromised by having to fit it in a thin case. My 2018 iPad has a far better webcam, but also is twice as thick. Physics would dictate that they need to use a very short focal length and hence a tiny sensor (to get a reasonable FOV) to fit it in the case, and process the hell out of it to compensate for the extreme noise in anything but the brightest light.
We of course would be complaining bitterly if they made the case even thicker to fit in a bigger sensor.

If saw many said that it was skin smoothing. Wouldn't it make sense if it's a noise reduction rather than skin smoothing? I checked footages online and it's also applied to other thing in the view. The details came back when exposed to bright sunlight.

Agree, the most important is to be able to perceive facial expressions

Except that, because of the angle, the camera is terrible
I'd rather have a better angle than a better definition

I looked everywhere there’s not setting to change this; it’s unstable people on my zoom work chat said my camera looked terrible, I thought with it now being 1080p and apple M1 power it would be sharp and great quality but nope apple gave us a notch for this terrible camera, might as well just put a small cheap one in the small bezel
What does the notch have to do with the hardware specs of the camera? Did I miss something?

One of the reasons given (or assumed) for the notch was that it was necessary in order to fit in an improved camera and still have thin bezels (unlike the Dell XPS, which squeezed a tiny webcam into a thin bezel).
But it turns out the camera is not actually all that much improved, but yet we still have the notch. i.e., worst of both worlds.

I think people would be more forgiving about the notch if it was obvious that the camera was now way better.

(btw, I don't mind the notch at all - not starting a notch argument).

It is better in low light than my 2012 iMac. However, the extreme smoothing/compression is off-putting and looks really cheap. Had hoped for better, I don’t really want to have to drag around a £30 logitech webcam.

I tried a few apps but nothing can turn off the smoothing.

You are spot on with my thinking, I don’t mind the watch eaither but with this notch I expected a better camera

Yeah it’s so bad I now need to look at buying a webcam

They all (including Max tech, shown above) praise how much better it is compared to the previous ones while displaying examples that showed the opposite with a very waxy rendering.
Not what I see in Max's video shown above. The new one shows better detail and looks better overall. And so far that's the most direct evidence at hand in this overheated thread.
