I just got my 16 mbp and this beauty smoothing filter is a joke.

I hated it. Why was this needed?

I have iMac 2019 and its cam is better than this.

I also noticed that lame smoothing… but trying with FaceTime.
When I use “Teams”, the camera is quite nice, no noise in low lights, detailed and realist natural color… Perfect.
My MacBook 16”pro arrived a week ago, and only tested with these… I suppose the behavior of the camera depends on software using it.
No problem with hardware part, blame the app.

This right here. I use teams for work and noticed that quality is slightly better than my iMac M1, except for when I use FaceTime. Teams looks much better, so I have no idea what's going on with the first party camera PI usage.

If the camera is deficient in design, and even worse in some cases than the older ones, as many are reporting, then Apple needs to fix it, either by improving the hardware or allowing users greater control over it.

Responses that are tantamount to “Well, if you don't like it, stop complaining and just return it” are insensitive and tone deaf. They’ve like the “Love it or leave it” remarks that were once hurled at people who criticized their country's government policies. We want to point out flaws, alert others, and try to nudge the powers that be to make things better!

nothing wrong with this for a webcam. you expecting cameras like iPhone for a webcam you aren't getting it in a notebook from apple.
I agree, "nothing wrong with this," but also not very good compared to other webcams. The 1080p webcam in my 2020 iMac is far better. I presume this is because the MBP one has to use a tiny sensor in order to fit the focal length into the thin lid, but not good is still... not good. So we have a notch to accommodate a mediocre webcam: just to be honest about what we are getting for the notch.

You're getting what people were continually clamoring for, 1080p. Apple resisted for a long time, but decided to give the people what they want. Most people are happy with it.

I have the MacBook Pro 16" m1 max and I love it but the webcam is so bad even now being 1080p its worse than my old intel model, its like it has a beauty smoothing filter on by default and can't disable it, in meetings I have the worse quality camera, no way its 1080p it looks like 380p anyone else seeing this
Same here. The camera quality is an embarrassment. It seems like a 480p or 780p (at best) webcam. Although it may technically be a 1080p camera, the quality of the picture is nowhere near that specification.

I just got my 16" M1 Max this week, and am not impressed with the camera quality. I mean, thanks for finally giving us a 1080p front-facing camera, Apple, but it's simultaneously too processed AND noisy. It actually looks worse in many ways than the 720p camera on my 2017 MBP.

It looks okay on its own, but when I'm using a green screen and Chroma Key in OBS, the noise really becomes apparent, and the keying has a constant "shimmer" around the edges that my old camera didn't. I'm going to get some brighter lights this weekend, but don't want to have to invest in expensive lighting or a different camera because of a shortcoming in a $5k machine.

Does anyone has noticed how fast the battery is drained while using the webcam?
I just did a test for a presentation, after 2h30 hours of webcam + screen sharing, 50% of my battery was gone!

That's probably more to do with streaming video and screen sharing than just having the webcam turned on. Look at your processor usage while streaming.

Hmmm. Are you using adequate light? My MBP camera looks pretty good with proper lighting, but sucks otherwise.

The notes on the macOS Ventura preview page says it requires an iPhone XR or later, so it likely has a minimum requirement of an A12 processor, and knowing Apple, probably needs both Ventura and iOS 16 for it to work.
