“By attaching Pro and Max to the names, when Apple reveals M2 next year, it will be clear to consumers who are less informed in Apple marketing names that the Pro/Max variants are still better than M2.”

Not clear to this consumer! M2 > M1.

M1 Pro and M1 Max are somewhat confusing in their own right, but both sound like advanced chips of the M1 type. Even as a MacRumors reader, I'd expect an M2 chip to be better than any flavor of M1.

Of course, it will be moot when the M2 Pro and M2 Max come out. In the meantime, however, this could well be another of Cook's brilliant, though Machiavellian, strategies. Many uninformed consumers who buy the cheaper M2 MBA will think they have a laptop with a better chip in it than the MBPs!

In related dismal news, if rumors pan out, the next MBA will get the ridiculous notch and lose the tapered front! Another design fail by Apple.

Classic tapered style is much easier to type on. The deeper palm rest is a huge benefit, too. At least, if rumors are true, we will see the return of the MagSafe connector. That should never have gone away. Even after nearly 2 years, I find that plugging in USB-C cables a major pain. Have to tilt the laptop or pick it up to plug in the power adapter or external drive cable.

M1 Max branding is as dumb as the whole Xbox One X / Series X naming.
Try saying this 5 times: "An M1 Max Mac beats all M1 Macs" or "A Mac with an M1 Max beats all M1 Macs"
Can you believe all the organizational layers of Directors / VPs / SVPs who approve these stupid names.
Phone Tim and complain!

Maybe if Scherzer has a great post-season and the Dodgers win the Series, Apple will hire him as a spokesperson for the new top chip.

I HUNGER
My main problem with this branding is that I wouldn't intuitively say that 'Max' is better than 'Pro'. I would have called them 'Pro' and 'Pro Max', but otherwise I like the branding.

You can't just decide to change the meaning of words! Haha. Max = Maximum. The best. The most. End of story.

I think this is very valid point. Imagine googling for m1 pro. You'll get m1 MacBook Pro as result.
I think M1X and M1Z would've been a lot better in so many ways
I don’t see how that’s a bad thing? That is the chip being used in the MBP anyways. But it also seems like an insignificant non-issue imo.

They’ve established with airpods and with iPhone now that the max is the highest tier. I think they’re trying to be consistent across their products so it’s clear for average consumers.

“By attaching Pro and Max to the names, when Apple reveals M2 next year, it will be clear to consumers who are less informed in Apple marketing names that the Pro/Max variants are still better than M2.”

Not clear to this consumer! M2 > M1.

If that’s your reasoning on why it’s not clear, than there’s no other solution. No matter what naming scheme they use, there will always be an M2. So regardless if it’s M1X, M1 Pro, or M1 Quadriphonic - you’ll always have the issue of “I'd expect an M2 chip to be better than any flavor of M1.” The only way to circumvent this is to give each chip a unique name that doesn’t use numbers.

Max certainly does. 13 Pro Max = top of the line. MBP M1 Max = Top of the line. And I reckon that come next year there will be an iPad Pro Max (12.9 model).

Again, it's pretty simple. Not really sure what the issue is. I'm not overly keen on the name, but it's very clear branding. Buy a Max and you get the best.

Exactly. I honestly laughed when they said M1 Max - but I also completely see the reasoning behind it. Apple has one of the best marketing teams on the planet. I’m sure they spent months discussing naming schemes. And as much as they sound stupid at times - they work. Also to me it seems pretty clear when you go to buy the product. The M1 Max is obviously more expensive than the M1 Pro. To a consumer that says “this one is better” and if they are still confused you can look at the product page that goes into details about the chips.

I actually think the pro and max make good sense.

Are you a professional or have professional level tasks that you need done?
If yes, get the M1Pro

Do you need the maximum performance, where time rendering or doing other tasks is money?
If yes, get the M1Max

Are you neither of the above or just want a home use or content consumption computer?
If yes, get the base M1.

The one exception is:
Are you looking to keep this Mac as a daily driver for a long time, possibly up to 10 years or more?
If yes, then focus on the best M1 Mac you can afford. It will be overkill today. But in 10 years, that extra BTO grunt will help future proof the Mac and keep it even more usable 10 years from now.

I would have preferred girls names. The new M1 should have been Marjorie the Amateur, Marjorie the Pro, and Marjorie to the Max.

I agree that the naming makes no sense. The 13-inch pro doesn't come with a "pro" processor, yet my iPhone is a "pro max" model. Meanwhile, the 14-inch pro can come with either a "pro" or "max" processor, but not with both names. They need to align the processor names with the phone, iPad, ATV, and HomePod processor names, so that it's easy to distinguish what we are talking about. I also think that the Max/Macs confusion is ridiculous and never should have passed an initial brainstorming session.

Agreed!

Taking a stand against this branding nonsense and using a worse computer for my needs as a result!

IMHO it would have been better to remain closer to the iPad CPU naming convention and use M1X and M1Z, as some leakers had anticipated, in order to avoid the tongue twister "Macs with an M1 Max"...
they dont want to associate these SOC with an ipad...since the ipad will never see this kind of power in that envelope
jesus..physics 101

Seems Linus agrees with my take on M1 Max branding:
if that man is your idol in marketing...
Apple is so easy to marketing now all their SoC from now on...
M1 M1 Pro M1 Max
Mac pro will have 2x M1 max and so on..easy marketing and very unforgettable

The naming is really bad when people are talking about the M1 Max.

I have been watching a lot of reviews and benchmark videos on YouTube, and hearing M1 Max and M1 Macs spoken in the same video can be really confusing.

Last weekend, I was having a conversation with a friend about the M1 Pro and M1 Max. I didn't really think about it when I was talking, but afterword I realized that he was getting confused when I was talking about the M1 Max thinking I was saying M1 Macs.

Maybe after a while the naming might be more clear, but right now, it is a mess.

The M1 Max is designed for people who do not care what they are called. The spec sheet is all they are interested in. Advertised specs and real world benchmarks. ie professionals.
