M1 Max branding is as dumb as the whole Xbox One X / Series X naming.
Try saying this 5 times: "An M1 Max Mac beats all M1 Macs" or "A Mac with an M1 Max beats all M1 Macs"
Can you believe all the organizational layers of Directors / VPs / SVPs who approve these stupid names.
The Bolded is false and/or isn’t applicable to Microsoft in your post.

Using the Xbox Series X for example. Phil Spencer (VP of Microsoft Gaming) stated in a Podcast that the naming scheme was developed by the marketing team solely. There was no ‘organizational layers’ of the naming to be approved.

And by using the ‘Series’ moniker, it paves the way for future numerics. Just because a naming scheme doesn’t fit your liking, doesn’t mean it doesn’t work as a whole.

I think brand naming in general has gotten worse for everyone, not just Apple.

I have the iPhone XS Max…. iPhone Extra Small Max? Oh right, the iPhone Ten S Max? ?
The M1 Max MacBook is not as bad, but it can be a tongue twister. Ma ma me ma ma me mah.

M1, M1 Pro, and M1… what’s beyond professional? Super? Hyper? M1 Hyper? M1 Pro Enhanced?
M1, M1 Pro, M1 Pro X?
M1, M1 P, M1 PX?
M1, M1-E, M1-EX? <- M1, M1 Enhanced, M1 Enhanced Extra!

I haven’t paid much attention to other brands and so I can’t say much about them, but nothing a few google searches wouldn’t be able to reveal a plethora of abbreviations, acronyms, and tongue twisters

This might be the case for other brands as well, but I am an Apple guy, and it is what I tend to notice more often.

I think I mentioned on an earlier post that the Apple TV, Apple TV app, and Apple TV+ naming was worse than the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max naming, but the more I think about it, the Mac line up is really starting to get silly.

Reading them is one thing, but having a conversation with someone about them can be confusing.

M1 MacBook Pro: I guess not really "Pro"
M1 Pro MacBook Pro: Twice the "Pro" as the M1 MBP. See, it is right there in the name
M1 Max MacBook Pro: "Pro" to the maximum

Is there anything more "Pro" than Max?
How about Apple's "Pro" desktop, M1 Max Pro Mac Pro? It might happen...

I guess Apple really wanted to differentiate the M1, M1 Max, and M1 Pro, I am just thinking there would have been a better way.

I know that M1X was floating around prior to the announcement, I think that would have been a good way to differentiate the chips, and something that the consumers are already familiar with.

The iPad name was kind of a joke when it was first announced, but the joke was quickly forgotten, so maybe the same thing might happen with the M1 naming as well.

Then again, I feel like Apple might be getting into the same problem they had with the product differentiation in the mid 90's, it may lead to another correction.

I had a laugh at the "M1 Max Pro Mac Pro".

I do think Apple is due for a clean up of their names. Utilizing "Pro" to differentiate their product lineup and silicon is a bit repetitive? M1 Pro MacBook Pro. M1 Pro Mac Pro.

I liked the M1X as well.

M1, M1X, M1Z? ?

Next gen could be M2, M2X, M2Z? Maybe that could work? ?

Then again, I feel like Apple might be getting into the same problem they had with the product differentiation in the mid 90's, it may lead to another correction.

I didn't switch to Apple products until 2009 (the 13" MacBook Pro was my first Apple computer) after they had made the switch to Intel silicon. Mid 90's when Jobs came back and helped clean and simplify the product lineup?

I agree that the current lineup is messy.

Speaking strictly about Apple's laptop lineup, until the recent M1 Max/Pro silicon release, it seemed like the MacBook Pro's were trying to be a MacBook Air.

I've wondered if the MacBook Air, in terms of naming, is necessary? Why not just drop the Air in Macbook Air and just call it a Macbook? Ultra-Light and Portable.

Leave the MacBook Pro as their beefier Professional counterparts so there's only the "MacBook" and "MacBook Pro" to choose between in terms of a product lineup with various silicon selections (M1, M1X, M1-Something).

Hey, at least they didn’t call it M1 Pro Max. “Which is faster, the M1 Pro Max or the M1 Pro Macs?”

But the very important question we're all missing:

Who is more pro?

The MacBook Pro M1 Pro Mac man, or the M1 Max MacBook Pro pro?

Answer: Neither. It's the pro Mac Mac Pro Max pro

And now I need a very stiff drink.

Option 1: Look who’s talking.

Option 2: Oh, the irony of the irony.
