Are we still waiting for a m395 v m395x comparison? Is the m395x worth the extra money?
We are yeah, from what I've read it's not super clear yet how worthwhile the upgrade is... But I got sick of waiting so I just bit the bullet and sprung for the M395X :p

I got my i5 R9 M395X yesterday. So far I have only played Heroes of the Storm (1440p ultra settings) - smooth as butter and dead silent.
That is extremely promising.

Can you try looking at FPS? Ctrl+Alt+F in game is the combination to run the monitor in the left upper corner.

If you have software that uses / needs the extra vram... maybe then. So far, no real life tests available. Theoretical speed difference between 395 and 395X is not that big.
I'm guessing gaming will require the extra vram? Only graphics intensive tasks I'll be doing is playing some games. Probably not high end ones just mainstream games on high settings 1440p, not 5k

For modern games 4Gb will for sure be necessary at decent resolutions. Even 8Gb might be better for 5K.

OS X or Windows?

This is a ray of hope in spite of almost any other poster here ... as if the M395X wouldn't beat a measly 775M when the M295X was trading blows with a 970M. Thanks!

I'd like to see those benchmarks where the M295x is trading blows with a 970M. Majority of games show an average of 30% better performance of the 970M. I won't even talk about the 980/990M's!

I dont know if choose i7 and M390.. or i5 and M395 :/

I'm developer and play CS GO, War Thunder and battelfield..

I'm a bit confused with some of these postings comparing a 2013 iMac to the 2015 iMac 5k. There are a lot more pixels to push around in the new generation.

As to m395 vs. m395x - I haven't seen a clean comparison yet. The aforementioned French site compare a m390 3.2 GHz i5 to m395X 4.0 GHz i7, and the latter was Much faster - but with clock speed, processor type and gpu all changed, I don't know what was most important.

If I absolutely had to choose, I think the i7 is impressive while the differences between the M390 and the M395 won't be so noticeable, especially for a GPU. You should know, though, that the iMac will heat up significantly. You could also save the money and have less heat by choosing only the i5 and the M390. Just my 2 cents.

When was the M295X trading blows with a 970M? The 970M destroys the M295X.

@mjohansen: are you sure 1440p high settings dead silent?
my M295X after 2 min the fan kick around 2800rpm and after 10 min it will slow down at around 1900rpm
what about temperature? while playing that game reach 104-105c ?

if you have istat pro..you can see at gpu diode and also the fan rpm
but are you sure is silent while gaming ?

If you play Windows games, yes. Apple games have been optimized for smaller vram's. Mainly because most Mac's don't have more than 2GB.

For optimize you mean cuting off quality? cose...you know... there is no such thing as an optimized triple A game on os X that run decently compared to the direcx counterpart

FPS mostly at around 50 FPS and 40 in 5v5 team fights.
So you have pretty much better performance than I have had on Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch with GT650M on low settings and 1280x800 resolution ;).

I have to say, that satisfies me very much.
