The M4 Pro variant weighs 1.6 lbs compared to the M2 Max Studio at 5.9 lbs. This tells me that having something to secure the Mini to the work surface will be in demand. At the least I hope the new Mini has a rubber or silicone base ring to help it stay in place. If not then I’ll probably use small silicone nubs as feet.

Anecdotally, I have an 8.5 year old 27” iMac and have gone months at a time without powering it all the way down
Same. Sometimes, I power off to clear out periodic gremlins. Owing to storms, downed trees, etc, we lose power 4-6x year and we don’t have an UPS. Our NG back-up generator takes 4 seconds to kick in and this is when I need to turn equipment back on.

I plan to design a base/enclosure with power button hack for my Mini M4 which also incorporates my MVMe Drive and my Timemachine Backup drive, I’ve got to work it out? I’ll wait for my Mini M4 to arrive which should be next week?

I was thinking of cutting a 4x4 piece of wood at about 2" in height to get it off my desk where dust bunnies accumulate. This gives me access to the power button, and the block of wood could be "dressed up" to look better than it is. Since I don't need the latest and greatest hub, I ordered this one, which still offers 10 gbps of transfer speed. I needed USB-A ports anyway. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGDD5QB...cp_ud_dp_XB2416NWZQ001EBQ6N01&skipTwisterOG=1

I’m looking for a thunderbolt 4 dock/hub with the host Mac port in the back and under $150
I don’t need Ethernet/hdmi or usb A ports

Edit
I checked everywhere and didn’t find one

Would this be a good Thunderbolt 4 hub for the m4 Mac mini ?
I see it on sale $60 in some places

And excuse the stupid question
But is it better to plug my external drives I have 3 , to the hub or plug the low level stuff mouse & keyboard,Time Machine drive , to the hub ?
I thought it was better to put the drives directly on the Mac and low level stuff on the powered hub but AI google is telling me the opposite is better , drives on the hub

3-in-1 Laptop Stand, Vertical Stand, Klearlook Laptop Stand, Tabletop, Single Laptop, Adjustable Width, Hex Key Included, Anti-Slip, Stable, Space Saving, ABS Material

Caution;
Make sure that it is a Klearlook (Manfacturer), or at least the fully open position is at least 2 inches. Many are 1.4 - 1.5 inches, which is no good for the Mac Mini M4

I would plug the externals directly into the computer if possible, and run the keyboard etc through the hub. Less risk of data interruption without the hub in between, plus transfer speeds that will be better (or at least no worse).

Google AI? Uh, okay.

In one review video of the M4 Pro mini, it is confirmed that if you flip the mini upside down, the thermals perform better and Cinebench gives a higher score. This fact matters a lot in choosing or designing with orientation in mind.

Do you have a URL for the one review?
video dialogue is in Cantonese, but should be understandable.
the upside down / sideway test results for turning is from 4:52 to 6:30.
He noted the fans was at full blast during middle of Cinebench, temp is just at 58 to 60C. He tried flipping it over and noticed the exhaust air felt cooler afterwards.
The tested graph then shows scores of 9165 for vertical sideways vs 8999 sitting on desk.

For rackmount guys like me:

myelectronics.nl just released the newly designed 19inch 1.25U rack mount for the Mac Mini 2024. It is slightly higher than the old 1U mount but you can have three mounted side by side now. This design also accounted for the new power button position by adding a lever near the bottom so that you can push it in front of the rack to press the power button for easier maintenance.

Nice, but where's the 3U model for 8 or 9 Mac minis? ;)

And running it upside down would eliminate the possibility of the fan sucking up a spilled drink.
