Been getting a lot of exercise doing all this fence jumping. I think I'm going to pick up a Mini today.

Ha, I've been doing the same thing as far as selling my 3 month old Macbook which the Mini is replacing it essentially. Think it's going on ebay after I get my Mini setup tonight. ;)

Following the forum over the last 24 hours led me to canceling my order, scoring the cheap one and picking up 4GB and a 320 7.2K drive third party like. Works out to being about $850ish. Only negative is that I couldnt get the faster CPU going this route.

You won't miss the .26Ghz

Picked up my mini tonight. Also sold my hackintosh today after I reverted it back to windows. Glad to see that thing go. Will setup mini sometime Friday. Got the base model for $599. Will upgrade ram next week

Can someone tell me if the 4G memory of my 17’’ unibody will fit in the slots of Mac mini?
Ill replaces the 4G with 8G soon.
So iam buying the lower version to upgrade by myself.
Thanks.

Got a Mac mini last night.

$599 model at the retail store; came out to -$650 after AppleCare and tax :D

Immediately upgraded RAM to 4GB and HDD to 320GB.

Yes it does.

I ordered a mini customized with 4 GB ram, because it wouldn't be that much cheaper for me to buy the ram elsewhere. I think it is supposed to ship today, but checking the order status page it now says: "Cancelled -- Replaced with new product" (translated), with the configuration of the "new" one being identical to the original. Is this Apple's SOP?

I guess it is still true that you should never let Apple customize the computer, even if the price difference is negligible.

Update: Estimated shipping date delivery date has now been changed, three business days later than the original date (five days in total!). It is as if I had actually cancelled my order and placed a new one. Thanks Apple!

Exact same for me, order was cancelled and a new order was placed with the exact same config. Where are you based? I'm in Germany and placed a custom order with upgraded CPU, max RAM and smallest hard drive. The original arrival date was March 10-11, it's now showing as March 12-13.

My new Mac Mini arrived today. I took the second option model, and in 24h hours my new Mini was at my hands. That's a quick delivery from Holland to Finland!

Tonight is a setup night it seems! :)

for any of you who have installed or will install a larger and faster drive, do you have any concern about increased heat? ie, the 7200 rpm vs the 5400 rpm drives?

I was leaning on the cheap side for the 320 gb Hitachi for $72., but I see some favor the WD for about $90. why?

I found this about the WD drive:

'Low power consumption - With technologies like IntelliSeek™, which calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption and SecurePark, which reduces power by parking the heads during low power idle mode, this drive delivers 5400 RPM-equivalent power consumption in a 7200 RPM drive.'

So basically the drive will only produce the same amount of heat as the original 5400 drive? And should not cause any problems?

Is this the WD Scorpio 320? That's the one I'm ordering as well. fingers crossed.

Amazon is delivering my Mac Mini today, I went with the upgraded one... I will most likely change the RAM later to 4gig... should have it in a couple hours.

I ordered a MacMini CTO base model with 2.26 GHz processor from the Apple Online Store. Got an email a few hours after I ordered it that it was picked up by FedEx in SHENZHEN CN! That was fast.

I also ordered an Hitachi 7K/320GB drive and 4 GB memory from OtherWorld to upgrade my new Mini base-model with CTO 2.26GHz. I already have this same drive in a Mercury OTG pocket-sized portable enclosure and it rocks. Plenty quiet and it's fast. Hitachi has been leading the market in 2.5" drives for quite a while; they make great drives. Hitachi specs on power dissipation are virtually identical on the 7K320 as their 5K320 model that Apple uses as the stock drive in the higher end Mini, so I think the heat dissipation of the Hitachi 7K320 shouldn't be a problem in the Mini. Compared to the WD Scorpio Black, the Hitachi 7K320 has very slightly lower heat dissipation, so I'd say the two are probably comparable heat-wise. The Hitachi 7K320 is $58 at Otherworld right now. Great drive at a great price.

Sweden. Mine was the $799 model upgraded with 4 GB ram and no change in cpu. Estimated delivery date changed from March 12-13 to March 17-18.

Why are you buying the 320gb HD if you plan to replace it?

And the extra $110 for the 4gb would be from the 2gb right? I guess from 1gb to 4gb is much more.

I am thinking of getting the 1gb , 120 gb version and upgrade to 4gb and a 7200 rpm HD. Anyone have an idea for the best 7200 rpm HD at 320Gb or above?

I would prefer expensive and silent to cheap and noisy.

The fastest and arguably best 320GB 7200 RPM drive is the Seagate 7200.3. I believe the fastest 7200 RPM 2.5" drive on the market is the new 500GB Seagate 7200.4, if you can manage to get your hands on one. (http://barefeats.com/note05.html)

I like Seagate drives and the momentus 7200.3 (3200GB 7200 rpm) has gotten good reviews and is fastest at the moment... whether it's speed difference is worth the additional cost to a user is another question. But, its heat dissipation specs are just a bit warmer than the Hitachi 7K320 and in the Mini, I would err on the side of heat management. Also, the Hitachi with current rebate is nearly half the price of the Seagate. I went with the Hitachi 7K320 (arguably as solid a choice as any), which is the same brand as Apple's stock drive and runs at the same dissipation specs as Apple's stock drive.

Either choice, the Seagate or the Hitachi (or Scorpio) at 7200 rpm will perform very well overall and much better than the 5200rpm stock drives. These are the two HDD brands which I have the most faith in, with WD coming in 3rd. Of course, no matter what the brand nor model, HDD's can and DO fail unexpectedly for any reason and any time. Don't fail to backup religiously (TimeMachine is your good buddy here!) or you may regret it dearly.

Mac Mini showed up yesterday afternoon...

Pics...

I loaded it up with my old Time Machine data, got all the updates and did my installs of software. This is SILENT. I had it copying over 50 gig of Mp3's then video and another 20 gig of pictures, it never made a sound. Heat is no issue either. I was really debating on just getting the low end Macbook (white) or this, as it's just for sitting next to my Windows PC, sharing the same LCD... but I'm glad I went with the Mini, I really don't think $799 is too high for what you get. I'm very, very happy.

For reference, I had a 2.66 iMac, and have the top Aluminum Macbook, and this appears to be just as fast... I'm loving it!

My "Bag of Hurt" :p

Just got back from the Apple Store in Altamonte Springs, Florida. They had both models in stock, I got the $599.00 one. Should be fine for the stuff I do.
Normally I order my Apple stuff online, just last month I ordered my Dad's Macbook from Amazon and saved $140. But ya know, sometimes the bug just bites you and you have to have it. Will probably be playing with it all night. :)
Oh yeah, also in the bag is that sweet bluetooth keyboard, always wanted it, now had the excuse to buy one.

Yes, partially correct but I need to confirm 100% again tonight.

In OSX I am pretty sure with even 4GB it showed 256MB VRAM.

But, I reinstalled XP last night and when booted into XP I get about 2.8GB of RAM and I checked in the nVidia control panel/system info and it said it was using 512MB VRAM. This makes sense, as it probably should have seen 3.3GB of RAM in XP but with the 512MB missing it was down to 2.8GB.

So again, I'll verify tonight but I think OSX with 4GB or 2GB sees 256MB VRAM, but XP with 4GB will see 512MB VRAM.
I'm looking forward to your findings.

The GTech 500Gb external I have uses a Hitachi desktop drive, It's been reliable, I think I'll go for the Hitachi drive in my Mini though...

..I'll only be buying when I get some solid information for the VRAM differences between the two models, are they locked at 128 and 256 as some are saying?

Or are they just RAM controlled video cards and the 128Mb model is only locked at 128Mb because of it's stock configuration from Apple with 1GbRAM and a simple & quick RAM upgrade will 'unlock' the card so to speak and give the 128Mb stock model Mac Mini an accessible 256Mb of VRAM

....oooh I hope so because it's not very clear and I think it might be locked , I can't think of any other reason to validate the price difference.

I'll be glad if the 'low end' model with 128Mb VRAM can be given 256Mb VRAM by simply upping the RAM to two or even 4Gb....it would be really really good if the VRAM went to 512Mb but I doubt that much good fortune will be bestowed on Macusers this week,...now that would be a nice 'eater egg'.

If the low end Mini's 128Mb video card is able to run at 256Mb with RAM upgrade that means that the 'high end ' Mac Mini with it's extra 200Gb HD space and a 1gig stick of RAM is costing £150 extra , wow.

The graphics card on the 2009 Mac mini uses system RAM as the frame buffer. With 1Gb RAM it's allocated 128MB, on 2GB or higher it's allocated 256MB.

I can confirm this having upgraded mine to 4GB today.

Indeed. Hence why I bought the base model and upgraded it myself. Cost me £7 for a deluxe "opening tool" from B&Q, plus I get my own choice of HDD upgrade when appropriate.

Nice.

What's the tool called, a spudger ? .

"Flexible Filling Knife" according to the packet, or a Putty Knife for normal peeps. You need a thin flexible one to crack the mini open. I tried a kitchen spatula and it wasn't flexible enough to release the tabs.

Spudger is a posh name for a plastic stick. I used a screwdriver instead.

LOL

"Flexible Filling Knife" lol packet names.. and 'spudger' cracked me up when I first heard that one
Does the metal not scratch the mini if you use a putty knife?.. I suppose you could wrap something around the knife maybe or is the gap that thin?

More damage to the tool than the Mini! Check ifixit for the cracking open instructions.

Spudgers is not a posh name; it's a term for a tool with a hook at one end and a point at the other.

You can't use your screwdriver to re-arrange wires.
