Was there any resolution from this thread?
Over Black Friday I bought a Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB. I recommended to a friend, and he bought one, too.

I installed mine a few days after it arrived, and experienced lock ups. . (4/5,1, 10.13.6. Flashed to Bottom 89). As described here, just some poking about in Safari and it locked up. Sometimes it just sat there, other times it restarted by itself. I did some FCPX import/exports, no trouble.

Later, I installed 10.14 on a newly wiped disk. While installing apps from the App Store, it locked up several times. Later, when just poking about on Safari, it locked up.

I installed the one for my friend yesterday (5,1, 10.13.6) and we tested with a Compressor job - no trouble. This morning he calls first thing and asks me to take it out and swap back the 5770. Just bringing up Firefox and mousing about on a couple of pages locks it up.

These are new Sapphire 580s, with the Game Mode/Compute option. I had switched both mine and his to Compute mode. Orinoco Frame buffer.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

It seems post #151 is the final solution for OP.

I have the earlier version (single ROM) card, and I'm noticing some things that I suspect are related to my RX580. Issues seem nonexistent when my HD7970 is installed. I'm going to give the RX580 a couple more weeks to confirm or disprove, but I expect a full return to the HD7970 is in the future.

More detail?

My RX580 experience is really quite flawless so far. Few annoying issues like GPU video engine not working in macOS, but that's same on any other card.

I shouldn’t have posted yet. I have more testing to do. It’s likely a different issue. I’ll post more detail if it turns out valid.

What’s the game mode/compute option about?
Sounds like AMD have messed around with these newer RX580’s.
As h98 says, flawless use here also.

The Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB unit I received has a switch. It's hard to find, and it was brought to my attention by a slip of paper in the box (the paper has the hallmarks of an afterthought - not very professionally done). I hadn't noticed the sticker on the outside of the box that says there are two modes.

I had mentioned in another post that I switched to Compute. After some issues, I've switched back to Gaming.

Sapphire make that, not AMD.

As I said, just different clock speed or fan profile etc, nothing special.

I haven’t noticed a hardware switch on mine for compute and gaming mode, but there is a software switch in the driver that lets you choose between compute and game

Yep, we are.

The SPI memory flash has a little space that is used for storing the NVRAM. The NVRAM has a public and a private part. You can erase the public one with zap-PRAM. The private part you cannot.

When the logic boards are made, the factory flashes the SPI-flash with the BootROM firmware. This firmware is unique to your Mac Pro. Every Mac has some hardware identifiers that are unique and a blob that describes the Mac ports and sensors. That is the hardware descriptor and is stored into the private part of the NVRAM just before the System Serial Number, Hardware Code and the System/Sales Order Number hardware identifiers.

So, every Mac Pro has a Base_XX blob that is flashed at the factory and never again updated. Apple used:

  • Base_17, Base_18, Base_19 with 2009 ones
  • Base_20 with 2009 B08 and Refurbished ones
  • Base_20 and Base_21 with mid-2010
  • Base_21 with mid-2012.
The sensor resolution and ports changed a little between each version, Base_17 size is 14KB, Base_21 is ~14,5KB.

I extracted and decompressed every version from BootROM dumps:
Is it worth flashing the Base_21 onto 2009/2010 models? And if so, how?

Some sensors resolution are greatly improved, compare the extracted/decompressed.

There are checksums and headers that need to be corrected besides just the hardware descriptor, I don't think it's valid for most people but someone that needs the improved sensors.

I'm getting a black screen before login on RX580 and Mojave. As soon as I type in my password and hit enter, the screen goes black and comes back once I'm in. Is this normal?

Hi all,

Well i have the same issues with a flashed 580 card. And was hoping that somebody found the solution.
Did many test installs even with dosdude , upgrade HS volumes to Mojave clean install even now to Catalina and still reboots freezes and have good split cables what came with the GPU from Ebay.

Had also green red orange and many strange color screens.
I try to do install on a sep harddrive but I don't think its the HD with volumes. its software or GPU hardware

Ok I read further here that a 4K display could cause troubles. I have a display port 1.2 version monitor.
Running display port is then the problem?
If i do DVI (lower res unfortunately) or HDMI will be better? I try that.

Attachement is my details

I solved the problem by replacing the power supply. I think it was on it's way out, but the extra power that the 580 was drawing was making it fail more often. As soon as I got a refurbished power supply and installed it, I never had a freeze or crash since.

Thats the one what I normal used in the machine but not allowed me to do the firmware updates. I come back at it...

I'm in the exact same boat here, got a 5,1 with a Sapphire Pulse RX 580, High Sierra 10.13.6, BootROM 144.0.0.0.0 and random freezes when only casually using the computer. Sometimes the computer will restart itself, sometimes I have to restart it manually. Moreover it seems to only happen when Safari is up and doing stuff. I've been using Firefox all morning and the only restart I had was after I pulled Safari up and started using it.

Nothing appears in my logs that indicates the system even knew it crashed.

The other thing I've notices is that the freezes occur after periods of intense use. I ran Logic, Call of Duty, LuxMark stress tests, a ton of Firefox tabs and a 4k YouTube video all simultaneously and had zero hiccups. Only after closing down all the intense stuff did the freeze happen.

I would like to somehow solidly convict the power supply for the issue before forking out the dough.

I've had my RX580 for almost 18 months. When I first installed it, and I was probably running 13.x, I had random issues, like a seeming restart and some freezes. Issues happened while working in FCPX and browsing in Safari. It was bothersome enough that I RMA'd the card. But the replacement didn't seem to help. I think the thing that helped was updating to 10.14. I don't recall any of this bad behavior over the last several months.

The more I mess with my computer, the more consistent the results:

Using Safari, particularly after a GPU-heavy event, almost always results in a freeze-reboot within five minutes, sometimes as quickly as 30 seconds.

Happened just barely. I played some games, ate dessert, browsed the web on FireFox. No issues for three and a half hours. Opened Safari (no extensions). Freeze and reboot within 30 seconds.

System.log at the time of the crash:

Try to get a spare drive to run 10.14.6.

Its RX580 driver is much more mature than the one in 10.13.6
