I have been trying to figure out how the RAM goes in there. It looks like there are two horizontal boards that slide out to install RAM. I think those massive heatsinks on the RAM modules were throwing off my perspective in the press photos.

No, no Front Row.

Hmm, I would understand the lack for front row more if the MacBook Pro did not have it, but since it does and this doesn't I'm a tad confused. Most people who need this machine probably wouldn't see the lack of Front Row as a deal breaker though, so it's sort of a non-issue.

And what in the hell is FB-DIMM? Never seen the FB before.
Fully buffered. There is a chip on the DIMM itself that talks to the memory controller and acts as a "buffer" between the memory controller and the RAM chips. The memory controller no longer talks directly to the memory. This buffer chip is also the source of the heat that requires the new heat spreaders.

It's understandable when you consider that the Mac Pro doesn't have an IR port or a remote. I would expect the displays to be updated with IR ports and remotes in time for Leopard to ship with Front Row built-in. Probably some USB IR dongle with remote will get sold as an add-on as well. This is speculation on my part, but there is a group consensus developing around these options.

Yeah that makes sense. I just expected apple to try and integrate it now so that they would have 100% of their systems to have it included, sort of like how iLife is a big selling point because every system includes it. That said, I'm sure it will be integrated eventually.

Yes. The RAM is installed on a riser board that slides out of the side of the Mac Pro. That and the hard drive sleds are very slick.

Wow that's pretty fast considering it's running in Rosetta. Someone in that other thread running an iMac G5 only got 4 min. and 36 seconds.

Makes no noise at all, looks like there are no fans in it. I expect that to change with a beefier video card.

So jealous of a silent system alone, let alone the fact that it is way faster than my Rev.A 1.8 Ghz G5 iMac also. If there was one reason to hate my current system it would have to be its ability to mimick the sounds of vacuum cleaner.

Sweet bastard that was fast!

Now somebody send the man a bargain basement PCIE video card so he can break his new $2500 toy to satisfy our curiosity.

Hold onto that G5 if you're a Photoshop Guru, I guess. Actually, I expect the 1GB of RAM is going to (negatively) affect the speed tremendously, but given the emulation it's not a surprise that the numbers aren't frightening.

Not a photoshop guru, 90% of my work is done in FCP and compressor. I suspect photoshop will run fine for my needs under rosetta.

holy hell

I can't imagine what that beast would do once a UB version of Photoshop is out. Under a minute certainly isn't outside the realm of possibility

compressor test

I did a quick test of compressor:

source: 5min HDV 1080i60 clip (export from FCP timeline)
output: Compressor default 16:9 120min fast encode

G5: 34min
Mac Pro: 12min

My mac pro is more that double the speed at the same task than my G5.

Yup, Conroe sure is a beast ;)

And that is nearly 65% faster . . .
