Could you please try a Handbrake test?

Just for comparison, I use
h.264 main profile
1000kbps Average Quality
2-pass encoding
128kbps AAC audio

I get around 22 fps on my 2.0GHz MBP w/2GB RAM

I ordered my Mac Pro as soon as the store came up, and I just got an e-mail saying that it shipped today, and will ARRIVE TOMORROW! The only part that sucks is I figured it would take several days to arrive so I sent it to my other address, which I won't be at until SUNDAY!!! *cries*

*sobs*

But if anyone wants any info about it (and certainly pics) ill be glad to post it. It's pretty much stock.

I'll be jumping from my 1.25ghz G4 PowerBook 1gb RAM to this beast, so does anyone want to stroke my ego and tell me how much I'm difference I'm going to feel/notice?

Lastly, I'm nervous now that I've read some posts about gfx, saying that the NVIDIA 7300GT completely sucks. I figured that NVIDIA makes really good cards and so it couldnt be bad, and that anything would be a jump from what my PowerBook has - was I wrong?

I haven't been keeping up on the video card scene in nearly a year or more, but from what I've been hearing, the 7300GT is a less powerful video card than what's in my MacBook Pro... and that's depressing.
However, I would imagine it'd be at least a little jump in performance from what's in your PowerBook....

i don't think it's a bad card... jsut not exactly good for heavy duty games and stuff
it's a $99 vid card vs. a $600 Nvidia 7950gx2
but it should be better than your laptop vidcard

Nice man! What did you order? I ordered the 3.0ghz setup w/ X1900XT, btooth&Fibrechannel- and my Order Status says September 12th. What was your estimated ship date before you got your e-mail?

The 7300 will be sooo much better, you can't really compare, don't even worry about it:)

I haven't looked through all the pages, so I don't know if this has been asked yet. If it has, excuse me.

How's the noise level/heat on this baby? It must be smoking fast! (Does it come with Front Row?)
No front row. No IR port or remote. It is quiet he said.

2.66GHz build with the 7300GT, 1GB RAM, 1 optical drive (I rarely use one let alone two), and the stock 250GB HD. I plan to upgrade to 2GB RAM, 750 GB HD, and WiFi/Bluetooth, but WiFi added a 3-5wk wait which was unacceptable and the other two options are too much $$ from apple.

I did a quick test of compressor:

source: 5min HDV 1080i60 clip (export from FCP timeline)
output: Compressor default 16:9 120min fast encode

G5: 34min
Mac Pro: 12min

My mac pro is more that double the speed at the same task than my G5.

what is your G5 setup?

Now if they only weren't 4k in Australia. I could get an educational discount but still 3.8 :(

Yeah, my hope is that we will see a smaller form factor Mac Pro (Mini?) with 2 drive bays, Core 2 Duo, etc for half the price.

I just need more than a Mini (big HDD - pref dual now Time Machine is coming out, good graphics card, decent processor (Core 2 Duo), decent ram slots (4 would be very nice for a cheap 2 gig or more) maybe even dual disc drives for superdrive and future bluray.

So half that Mac Pro spec for about half the money ... say $2500 AUD :)

I reckon they'll go for a new name for HD drives, maybe 'Hyperdrives' or 'SuperDuperdrives' :p

Probably not. The 1.44MB floppy drive used to be called the "Superdrive" too. The current DVD RW drive will probably become the stock drive, and the HD/BR drives will be the new Superdrive.

That would kill iMac sales. I can't imagine that Apple would make a Pro desktop like that. That isn't to say that people wouldn't buy it, but Prosumer (applied here as iMac/Mac Pro crossover) isn't one of Apple's current target audiences.
