Didn't Apple say that there was an update to bootcamp at WWDC? If so then I would assume that they were making it compatible with the Mac Pro. I'm really jealous of you though, my iBook G4 doesn't even come remotely close to the mac pro. could you do a geekbench test? I want to see how much it crushes the Quad G5 :p.

I got 297.9.

Rosetta test: 194.8

I posted the results to the site and they can be found here:

If Boot Camp is broken I guess it's not surprising Parallels is too. Maybe we'll see a Boot Camp update by the end of WWDC, or shortly afterward (at least by the time I can get my own MP, haha, there are some thing I want Windows for).

I'm guessing you didn't get the Airport card either, because it says there's a 2-4 week delay if you get one, grr. That sure is fast shipping you got though, wow.

The Mac Pro is SILENT, all you can hear is the hard drives. My G5 was like that until I upgraded the video card to the ATI x800 xt, that card is loud.

I would wager to guess that BTO machines with higher end cards will be louder than mine, but as to how much louder is anyones guess.

boooo

Don't be so quick to cry wolf – Apple just hasn't released drivers yet for the Mac Pro because you can use different graphics cards in it, which means it'll take more time. So Boot Camp will work sooner or later.

Man, that's pretty fast on the benchmarks. Blows my MacBook out of the water…

2 questions...

how did you get it so quick?

and where are the fans in the mac pro?

1. Lucky

2. I think there are two pulling air through the ram riser cards but that's all that I can tell. There is a thread posted here on MR that has a link to the dismantling of a Mac Pro, that might help answer your questions.

Parallels doesn't work either. I can create an image, but when I try to run it I get the message:

"Unable to communicate with hypervisor!"
Have you tried updating to the new beta that was released today? Maybe they fixed it...

I wish I could afford a Mac Pro... but all I've got for now is this Mac mini. It does what I need it to do though, so a Mac Pro would be waaaay overkill.

At least there's only one more year left till I get a new MacBook Pro for college! (I want to wait until the day after WWDC, just in case. :D )

That would kill iMac sales. I can't imagine that Apple would make a Pro desktop like that. That isn't to say that people wouldn't buy it, but Prosumer (applied here as iMac/Mac Pro crossover) isn't one of Apple's current target audiences.

I don't think it matters if a "Mac Mini Pro" would eat some iMac sales. Instead of selling an iMac, Apple would sell a Mini Pro with a Cinema Display. They'd still make out like bandits. I really think a slightly taller mini with decent graphics (say x1800 or better) and a 3.5" HDD would be a killer product.

With Apple lowering prices on those beautiful displays, it's a crying shame they don't have something between the mini and the Mac Pro to use them with. (And the notebooks generally make poor desktop replacements for those who don't care about mobility.)

How much of a delay would it have been?

From what I have read, the ATI card was vastly superior when compared to the stock nvidia it came with. I noticed that the ATI was a bit more money and the apple store did specifically say there would be a delay if you build to order with the better videocards, but I definitely would have waited it out to get the superior video card.

That is just me tho of course, and I am sure the system you configured will be just fine for your needs. Also, that seemed like some damn quick delivery! thanks for the pics!

I ordered with ATI videocard.

Expected date: 11 september :(

Congrats man!

Know nobody has a wireless card yet, but can anyone confirm that the card would connect to 2 antennas? The macrumors title pages says it might indicate apple supporting 802.11a, but I would guess it would actualyl be 802.11n, or at least something with MIMO.

Im personally very suprised with the amount of people that are worried about bootcamp and parallels, I can understand on the entry level switcher friendly mac models, but the Mac Pro is high end, you should still be running windows apps on a machine that is so incredibly expensive?? That said, I would really like a midrange machine as well... ;)

Sorry to spam a bit on this thread, but I wanted to throw this out:

For my work I do various consulting tasks and last week one involved setting up a Dell Precision 690 (the exact system apple compared with the MP in the keynote) to run some fluid dynamics software. Being highly-demanding computational software, the system was equipped with 64Gb of memory. Yes, I said 64Gb.

I was wondering if anyone knows why apple would ever choose to cap this at 16Gb when there is a clear need for some applications to address more than 16Gb. The mobo is uncannily similar as well (the physical memory setup is identical) so it's apparently not a "too-big" problem and 64-bit can go to 16 exabytes...

I just figured if they were competing with the Dell that they would at least shoot for the same memory config to keep competitive for high-end users.

Since it is FB-Dimms, you can have 64 gigabyte of memory.
Every Dimm has it own processor. This is one of the reasons behond the FB-part.

I don't understand Apple.
When the original G5 was released, they said max 8gig.
With 2gig DIMMS, you could have 16gig.

Rev 2, they said max 16gig.
By then, 4gig DIMMS where released, so you could have 32gig.

Since there are 8 slots, 32gig should be the "limit" today, until bigger dimms.

I would love 32gig memory, my Final Cut projects, all in memory.

or meaby ITUNES will be fast!

I don't see any 4GB FB-DIMMs available though, at least not at newegg or crucial.

However 2x1GB sticks from crucial designed for the mac pro available for 350ish. not bad. 8 gigs for 1400, and you can sell the stock ram while you're at it :D

This is not a joke post. In a year you should be able to buy a sixteen core Mac Pro for about this same money to take you through college with a decent amount of power. :)

So glad to hear they can't be heard. I love how dead silent the Quad G5 is. Yeah that's the best part about the base cards, they run without fans. I'm gonna buy 3 so I can put one more in my Quad G5. Wonder if they're alacarte at the Apple Store yet?

I got 259.8 on my Quad G5. Not too shabby. ;) Certainly not being "Crushed" by the Mac Pro's small increase in speed. The Mac Pro is not about being faster iBook. It's about being radically more expandible - 6 internal SATAs. That's where the Mac Pro shines. Needs 8 cores before it gets really faster.
