"To be honest", I wouldn't have purchased the Mac Pro if I couldn't also afford a Pro Display XDR. I got the Mac Pro on Dec 17 and the XDR is coming Tuesday. Meanwhile, I'm using my 27" 5K LG.

Are we XDR delivery buddies? Mine says it's in Shanghai for Tuesday delivery.

Yea, totally disagree. If you need it for your job, and particularly if you have a business, you can write it off. IRS just wants to see the receipts that it's legit. That you want to buy a craftsman tool instead of a cheap knockoff is your business.

What I inferred from the post is that he’s using an educational expense deduction, and not a business deduction. Harder to justify an XDR as an educational expense. His audit risk is also already likely very high, so not good to throw an XDR on.

Honestly I find it kind of silly though. If not getting a deduction on an XDR is really what kills it for you... well...

But as a business expense it should be absolutely no issue. The IRS is never going to look at the display, look at your business, and say it’s not valid.

What they’re more likely to call you on is if you’re using it for personal use and not business use. That’s more quick to come up in an audit. And if you’re trying to pretend you have a business, adding an XDR could also lead you to declaring an overall loss which is another huge red flag.

Setting up my Mac Pro I dropped and smashed my LG 49". Went out and purchased a Samsung 49" LC49RG as a replacement because I found the LG to be not as sharp. Much happier. (will claim the LG on purchase protection!).

If or when I got a 2019 mac pro, I would continue to use my 2 dell 27“ qhd displays (Matte).
No reason for me to over tax the gpu’s with hard work to run 4k/5k/6k.

Will you keep the 5k and use both together? Thoughts on this setup?

I'm not sure I understand this. I'm running 8K right now and the GPU sits at 29MHz core and 500MHz memory.

If I am moving millions of polys around my screen, I don’t want the gpu to be having to refresh a 6k display. Realtime performance will change between a 2k display and 6k display.
Ergo, I would get better performance with a lower rez display, and make better use of the gpu.

You understand that "moving millions of polys around" on a screen is basically a NO-OP for a GPU, right? GPUs get loaded up when they do calculations. Not "drawing".

Really. It won't matter one bit.

It’s also complicated by your screen resolution being different than your 3D viewport resolution. Just because you have a 6k display doesn’t mean you are rendering in 6k.

And moving around flat windows in 6k is dead easy for a GPU. MacBook Pros in scaled resolution will sometimes render that high. They overrender to produce a better scaled image.

Still, if you don’t need the 6k, you don’t have to buy a 6k.

I really would like an XDR and I think that I could order one during February- but I see shipping times already slipping into the end of February... when do you guys think it’ll become regularly available based on past releases?

I got the BenQ 32 inch today and, although the build looks nice, I'm not impressed with the monitor. Seems very dim and low contrast. its only 300 nits, so that certainly has something to do with it. I think the LG 5K looks better quality, so I'll probably swap out for that. Will just have to live with the ugly body. ?

The sooner you order the sooner you get it. Otherwise you will be waiting for demand to be met.

My 24-core turned up early and, for the time being, I've put my old RX580 in so I can use my trusty 27-inch Apple LED Cinema Display, which still looks as good as the day I unpacked it in 2010! If anyone has any suggestions for a suitable upgrade, I'd be happy to hear them!

Does the machine boot with grey screen with just your old RX580 in it, or does it need the 580x in there as well?

Dell UP2715K, which had the same IPS panel as the first Retina 5K iMac.

(Dell actually beat Apple to market by a few months in late 2014, but somehow Apple got the credit for introducing 5K to the desktop. Good spin doctors.)

I was originally using this monitor on a trashcan Mac Pro, then 2 years ago I moved to an iMac Pro and the screen became a PC monitor. So now it's come full circle.

It needs 2x DisplayPort inputs, so to connect the Mac Pro 7,1 I use a Sonnet Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort Adapter.

you answerd your own question. it needs 2 DisplayPort cables! Bit obsolete method of connection now.
The iMac was the first all in one to do 5k

yes, but 8bit color only (MacOS limitations), if you need 10bit you need Windows 10

Please show me a screenshot of this monitor at 7680x4320@60Hz in MacOS.

I'm stuck at 7680x4320@30Hz (4K HiDPI) in Mojave.

Dell U3818DW 38" ultra-wide. No desire for the XDR, to be honest. I don't want a monitor that emits that much heat or requires active cooling.
That’s probably what I’m going to go for. Is it 60hz, and is it all connectable with one single cable (unlike some other Dells)?

I thought the XDR uses passive cooling....?

There's fan in there, but according to Ars Technica, it runs at 7 decibels, which pretty much means an ant scurrying up the wall would drown it out.

Also, Apple is very good at thermals and this monitor has a wide brightness range, so chances are when you're using 500 nits to browse the web, it would use much less energy than at 1600 nits and wouldn't have to be cooled as aggressively.
